Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell received heartbreaking news during the NFL’s summer break—a call about the sudden passing of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson, just before training camp was to begin. Jackson, a fourth-round draft pick from Oregon, tragically lost his life in a car accident on July 6, along with two friends.

During his season-opening news conference, O’Connell discussed how the team plans to honor Jackson, who was known for his vibrant personality and work ethic, even though he never had the chance to play in a game.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah expressed the team’s deep sadness at losing such a promising addition to their roster and culture.

The Vikings have contributed over $20,000 toward funeral expenses for Jackson and his friend Isaiah Hazel, with team leaders planning to attend the services. Additionally, Jackson’s family will be flown to Minnesota for a private tribute with players and coaches.

To memorialize Jackson throughout the season, his jersey number (No. 31) and locker will remain untouched. Players will wear helmet decals and coaches will wear pins featuring Jackson’s initials as a tribute to his memory.

On Sunday, 38 players, mainly rookies, quarterbacks, and those recovering from injuries, reported to the team headquarters. The rest of the squad is expected to arrive on Tuesday.

Coach O’Connell usually waits until everyone is present to give his season-opening speech. However, this year he took extra time to meet with the first group. He emphasized the availability of mental health support and explained how the team plans to honor Khyree Jackson, especially to players who were close to him.

“Khyree was with us for a short time, but our team culture builds strong bonds quickly,” O’Connell said. “Over the summer, I heard from veteran players about the significant impact he made in such a brief period.”

Jackson’s passing serves as a poignant reminder to the Vikings of life’s unpredictability and the uncertain nature of their careers.

“It’s a wakeup call for us all,” O’Connell remarked. “None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Many players have reflected on how unfair this situation was for Khyree and his family, and have wondered what could have been.”

Less than a week later, this point hit home again when second-year wide receiver Jordan Addison was arrested in California for a suspected DUI. Addison, who was previously cited for speeding just before his first training camp, was set to join camp on Tuesday.

The Vikings have decided to let the NFL handle any disciplinary actions according to the agreed player conduct policy. Typically, the league waits until legal proceedings are resolved before taking action.

“Jordan is more disappointed in himself than anyone,” Adofo-Mensah commented. “He holds himself to a high standard and comes from a great family. He knows what he needs to do to be his best self.

“He feels he’s let himself down in that respect. We don’t focus on terms like discipline here. Our focus is on creating the outcomes we desire. “Our goal is for Jordan to excel both on and off the field, and he’s fully committed to that.”
