Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson was placed on the physically unable to perform list as expected on Monday at the start of training camp. He is still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee, which is not fully healed yet.
Hockenson was one of 38 players who reported on Sunday, mostly rookies, quarterbacks, and players rehabbing injuries. The rest of the team will report on Tuesday, with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday.
Coach Kevin O’Connell mentioned that Hockenson has progressed well in his rehab, only missing time during the offseason to visit his surgeon in Los Angeles.
During camp, Hockenson will continue to increase his activity level. The current expectation is that he will likely return to play after the season opener on Sept. 8.
Hockenson delayed his ACL surgery until Jan. 29 to allow his MCL to fully heal, which has slightly extended his recovery timeline but should benefit his overall readiness for the season.
Coach O’Connell emphasized the importance of ensuring Hockenson’s return is handled correctly, considering his significant role in the team’s future.
Hockenson, a two-time Pro Bowler, had a career-best 960 receiving yards in 15 games last season but was injured on Dec. 24 against Detroit.
Cornerback NaJee Thompson (knee) and running back DeWayne McBride will also miss the start of camp. McBride’s absence is due to a non-football injury, with the specific details undisclosed by the Vikings.
