Quarterback Joe Burrow is starting the season mostly healthy for the first time since his rookie year in 2020.
This is a big reason for hope for the Cincinnati Bengals as they get ready for their opener against the New England Patriots on Sunday.
The main concern for the Bengals is whether Burrow’s top receiver, star Ja’Marr Chase, will be able to play.
Chase, who is working on a contract extension with the team, missed a lot of training camp while waiting for the situation to be resolved. He mentioned on Friday that it was his choice whether to play.
Chase practiced this week, which is a good sign for the Bengals. He was listed as questionable and said that if he does play, he might be limited due to the lack of practice.
Burrow, who won a national championship at LSU with Chase in 2019, believes that if Chase plays on Sunday, he will be ready both physically and mentally.
Chase has two years remaining on his contract but is hoping for a new deal that reflects his status as one of the top receivers in the NFL.
“I’m not getting involved in his business. I’m focusing on my work, trying to improve every day and get ready for Sunday,” Burrow said.
“I know he’s doing what he needs to do to be ready, if needed. I’m just doing what I have to do.” Coach Zac Taylor mentioned that the Bengals have a backup plan if Chase cannot play.
Burrow is back after tearing a ligament in his throwing hand on November 16 and undergoing surgery. The Bengals finished the season 9-8, ending up last in the AFC North.
