The New York Giants have reached the halfway point of the season and now need a miracle to make the playoffs.
After losing their fourth game in a row, a 27-22 defeat against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, the Giants are now 2-7 with eight games remaining. They likely need to win all of them to have any hope of making the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Despite the tough season, the Giants continue to play hard for head coach Brian Daboll, who took them to the playoffs in his first year in 2022. The team has talented players on both offense and defense, but they’ve struggled with consistency. The main problem has been their inability to score touchdowns.
New York has only scored 14 touchdowns in nine games, with none coming from the defense. That averages out to just 1.55 touchdowns per game. Their scoring average is a low 15.4 points per game, even with a new offensive line, the No. 6 overall draft pick Malik Nabers catching passes, and a healthy Daniel Jones at quarterback.
There is a lot of frustration within the team and organization, even though co-owner John Mara recently gave Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen his support.
“I don’t think anybody should be happy,” Daboll said on Monday, explaining that everyone is still searching for answers and solutions.
“There’s again a few plays here and there that we got to either make them or we don’t make them, and those are huge contributing plays to the results that you’re looking for,” Daboll said. “I’m in charge of all that. That’s what I’m going to work to do. I look forward to getting ready to go this week.”
The odds aren’t in the Giants’ favor, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.
“The Giants are having a tough season, and bettors are eager to bet against them,” BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini said in a statement. “Only 15% of bets were placed on New York to cover the 4-point spread on Sunday.
While the Giants aren’t playing their best, fans of the team could earn a big payout if the team turns things around.”
He mentioned on Monday that a $10 bet on the Giants to win the Super Bowl would pay out $10,000. But that’s a big long shot.
