The New York Jets and linebacker C.J. Mosley have reached an agreement on a new two-year contract worth $17.25 million, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press.
Mosley was set to earn a non-guaranteed $17 million in base salary for the upcoming season under his previous contract, which would have resulted in a team-high $21.5 million against this year’s salary cap.
The renegotiated contract, which was aimed at helping the team’s cap situation, will free up approximately $8 million. Additionally, it provides Mosley with more security and extends his tenure with the Jets for another year.
The revised deal includes $13.25 million in guarantees, with $9 million fully guaranteed for this season, the person told the AP on condition of anonymity because the team has not officially announced the details. ESPN was the first to report on Mosley and the Jets agreeing to the restructured contract.
In addition to the Mosley agreement, the Jets have also announced the re-signing of offensive lineman Jake Hanson.
Mosley, 31, has been the leading tackler for New York over the past three seasons, while also serving as the primary signal caller in the middle of the Jets’ defense. He earned second-team All-Pro honors last season and secured his fifth career Pro Bowl selection—his first with New York—in 2022.
Originally drafted by Baltimore, Mosley spent his first five NFL seasons there, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier playmaking linebackers. He signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Jets in 2019 but was limited to just two games that season due to a torn groin. Mosley, like several other players, opted out of the subsequent season due to COVID-19 concerns.
Despite the setbacks, Mosley has been a consistent performer and leader since then, reshaping his physique to better suit the Jets’ defensive scheme under coordinator Jeff Ulbrich and head coach Robert Saleh. Recognized with the Jets’ selfless warrior award last season by the coaching staff, Mosley has missed only one of New York’s last 51 games.
With over 1,000 career tackles, 12 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, and nine fumble recoveries, Mosley has established himself as a versatile and impactful defender.
Hanson, a restricted free agent, appeared in seven games last season, including four starts at right guard. His return bolsters the depth of the Jets’ offensive line, a unit that general manager Joe Douglas has prioritized in the early stages of free agency.
The Jets finalized a trade on Wednesday to acquire offensive tackle Morgan Moses from the Ravens. As part of the deal, New York will also receive Baltimore’s fourth-round pick (No. 134 overall), while sending a fourth-round selection (No. 112) and a sixth-round pick to the Ravens.
Earlier in the week, former Ravens guard John Simpson agreed to a two-year, $18 million deal to join the Jets.
