The New York Knicks have named Jalen Brunson as their captain, marking the first time they’ve had one in six years.
Brunson, who joined the team in 2022, quickly became a leader. On Tuesday, he was named the 36th captain in Knicks history. The team hadn’t had a captain since Lance Thomas in the 2018-19 season.
Knicks President Leon Rose praised Brunson as a “natural born leader” and expressed confidence that the All-Star guard will continue to represent the team, fans, city, and his teammates with the same dedication and professionalism he has shown since arriving in New York.
In his two seasons with the Knicks after coming from Dallas, Brunson has guided the team to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs both times. Last season, he averaged 28.7 points, earned his first All-Star selection, and finished fifth in the MVP voting.
Brunson becomes the fourth second-round pick to be Knicks captain, joining the ranks of notable players like Willis Reed, a Hall of Fame center known as “The Captain” for his leadership.
