The Pittsburgh Steelers made significant roster moves ahead of the upcoming free agency period by parting ways with cornerback Patrick Peterson and wide receiver Allen Robinson II on Friday.
Peterson, a veteran with eight Pro Bowl appearances, joined the Steelers on a two-year deal last March. However, the team opted to release him as he was due a roster bonus of nearly $3 million the following week.
Despite being 33 years old, Peterson contributed to the Steelers’ defense last season with two interceptions and 42 tackles. He also played a mentoring role for rookie Joey Porter Jr. Peterson demonstrated versatility by transitioning from cornerback to safety towards the end of the season, providing depth amid injuries in the secondary.
Robinson, who was acquired via trade from the Los Angeles Rams in April, had a subdued season with the Steelers. He recorded only 34 receptions for 280 yards, marking a career-low in yardage, and failed to score a touchdown. The decision to release him results in significant salary cap savings of $10 million for the Steelers.
In addition to the roster cuts, the Steelers re-signed backup defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko, who spent the majority of last season on the practice squad.
