Cameron Sutton was at the Detroit Lions training facility in Allen Park when the team found out about a domestic violence warrant issued for him in Florida. Lions President Rod Wood told WJBK-TV Fox 2 on Monday that the team spoke to Sutton, who is 29 years old, and advised him to surrender to authorities.
“We found out about the warrant at the same time as everyone else on social media,” Wood told the station. “We were able to talk to Cam because he was actually in our building. We located him. He was with our strength staff. He came in unexpectedly to work out.”
The Lions released Sutton on March 21 after news of the warrant came out.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, which includes Tampa, has asked for assistance in locating Sutton, who has played in the NFL for seven years and just completed his first season with the Lions, helping them reach the NFC championship game for the first time in 32 years.
The warrant is for domestic battery by strangulation, which is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The sheriff’s office mentioned that Sutton might be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a Florida license plate.
