The San Jose Sharks put rookie Macklin Celebrini on the injured reserve list on Saturday due to a lower-body injury.
This decision was made just two days after Celebrini had a great debut, where he scored a goal and had an assist in an overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
At 18 years old, Celebrini was the first overall pick in June and is expected to help with the Sharks’ rebuilding efforts. He struggled with a lower-body injury during the preseason. Coach Ryan Warsofsky mentioned that Celebrini is week to week.
Players on injured reserve have to sit out for at least seven days after their last game.
Celebrini made history by becoming the youngest player in NHL history to get two points in the first period of his debut, according to Sportradar. He achieved this at 18 years and 119 days old.
The previous record was held by Shane Doan, who was 18 years and 362 days when he had two points for Winnipeg against Dallas in 1995.
Celebrini also scored the second-fastest first goal ever for a No. 1 pick, netting his goal just 7:01 into the game. The only faster goal was by Mario Lemieux, who scored 2:59 into his debut against Boston on October 11, 1984.
Last season, Celebrini had 64 points in 38 games as a freshman at Boston University, where he won the Hobey Baker Award as the top college player.
