The St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves had to postpone their Friday night game due to ongoing rain.
Both teams, positioned second in their respective divisions (NL Central for the Cardinals and NL East for the Braves), have rescheduled the matchup as a split doubleheader at Truist Park on Saturday.
The first game is set to begin at 1 p.m., followed by the second game at 7:20 p.m., though there remains a chance of further rain.
Persistent rain disrupted the Cardinals’ pregame batting practice, leading the grounds crew to cover and uncover the infield multiple times throughout the evening. The decision to postpone the game was made at 9:30 p.m.
In the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader, veteran right-handers Kyle Gibson (St. Louis) and Charlie Morton (Atlanta) will face off. Gibson, aged 36, holds a 7-3 record with a 4.16 ERA, while the 40-year-old Morton is 5-5 with a 4.07 ERA.
For the nightcap, the Braves will call up Bryce Elder from Triple-A Gwinnett to start against Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray (9-6, 3.34 ERA).
Atlanta’s rookie Spencer Schwellenbach, originally slated to start Friday’s game, will now pitch in the series finale on Sunday, providing extra rest for All-Star Max Fried, who was initially scheduled to start on Sunday.
