This approach provides the Steelers with a safety net. If Wilson’s performance falters, there won’t be any criticism for failing to extend his contract.
Conversely, if he excels, extending his deal becomes an obvious choice.
However, there’s a strategic element to leaking this information. By signaling their intention to sign Wilson to a longer deal, the Steelers aim to dispel any speculation that Fields was acquired to be the immediate starter. It’s a cautious move to manage expectations and avoid any perception of indecision or manipulation.
