The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have opted to apply the franchise tag to Antoine Winfield Jr., securing the All-Pro safety with a one-year, $17.1 million salary for the upcoming season.

The team remains committed to negotiating a long-term deal with the talented four-year veteran, who has been a standout performer since entering the league as a second-round draft pick in 2020.

Winfield boasts impressive statistics, leading all defensive backs in sacks (15), quarterback hits (21), forced fumbles (11), and fumble recoveries (eight) during his time in the NFL.

In the 2023 season, Winfield showcased his versatility by leading the Bucs in interceptions with three. He joined a select group of players, including T.J. Watt, Justin Tuck, and Terrell Suggs, as one of the few since 2000 to achieve five-plus sacks, five-plus takeaways, and five-plus forced fumbles in a single season.

The decision to franchise tag the 25-year-old was widely anticipated. Additionally, the Buccaneers recently secured wide receiver Mike Evans with a two-year, $52 million contract extension, demonstrating their commitment to retaining key players.

Furthermore, negotiations are ongoing to re-sign quarterback Baker Mayfield, following the team’s successful campaign in winning their third consecutive NFC South title last season.

Winfield’s NFL journey is marked by his father’s legacy, former Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield Sr. Since his rookie season, Winfield Jr. has been a pivotal starter and contributed to the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl victory.

Throughout his four years in the league, the team has consistently reached the playoffs, showcasing Winfield’s integral role in their success.
