George Springer hit a three-run home run, his second of the game, which helped the Toronto Blue Jays score five runs in the fifth inning and win 7-3 against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night. This loss was the Red Sox’s fifth in a row.

In the afternoon game, Danny Jansen’s former team, the Blue Jays, defeated his current team, the Red Sox. Springer hit a 416-foot home run over the Green Monster, and the Blue Jays’ seven pitchers held the Red Sox to just four hits, winning 4-1. This was the completion of a game suspended by rain in June.

Jansen made history as the first player to appear for both teams in the same game. He started as the Toronto catcher on June 26, but the game was stopped with him about to bat. Jansen was traded to Boston on July 27 and caught when the game resumed on Monday after a 65-day delay.

“It was a very cool moment, just to be part of it,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “I don’t know if it’s going to happen again.

It has to be kind of like the perfect storm for that to happen — starting with the storm. And I’m glad that everybody enjoyed it.”

In the second game, with Toronto behind 1-0, Springer hit a home run off reliever Brad Keller (0-4) that curved around the Pesky Pole for his 19th homer, putting Toronto ahead 3-1. Addison Barger added an RBI single, and Ernie Clement hit a run-scoring double to finish the big inning.

“I’m just happy to help us there,” Springer said, smiling. “It was a big situation. … Our team is still in there fighting. We’ve got guys (in the clubhouse) fighting.”

The Red Sox made four errors and have a 14-22 record since the All-Star break. They fell further behind the Minnesota Twins for the AL’s third wild-card spot and are 29-37 at Fenway Park.
