Trevor Richards and the Blue Jays’ bullpen stepped up after Alek Manoah had to leave the game due to elbow discomfort, securing a 3-1 win over the struggling Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.
In the second inning, Manoah was checked on by manager John Schneider and a trainer after throwing a pitch to Dominic Fletcher. Feeling some discomfort, he decided to leave the game after a brief discussion on the mound.
Manoah, who is 26 years old, will undergo an MRI on Thursday to assess the extent of his injury.
Richards (1-0) replaced Manoah and pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Tim Mayza, Zach Pop, and Yimi García also contributed with solid performances before Jordan Romano closed the game, earning his eighth save of the season.
Toronto’s offense was led by Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who drove in two runs. The Blue Jays completed their road trip with a 4-3 record.
The White Sox, on the other hand, are struggling, having lost eight consecutive games, including all games of their recent homestand. Chris Flexen (2-5) had a tough outing, issuing five walks in five innings, but managing to limit Toronto to two runs.
Despite the win, Toronto will be concerned about Manoah’s injury, while the White Sox continue to search for solutions to their hitting woes.
Manager Pedro Grifol emphasized the need for hard work and preparation to turn things around for the White Sox.
