Sassuolo’s chances of staying in Serie A suffered a setback when they let a two-goal lead slip away in stoppage time, ending in a 2-2 draw with last-place Salernitana on Friday.
Starting the match near the bottom, Sassuolo managed to go ahead by two goals, with Nedim Bajrami playing a key role. Armand Laurienté scored the first goal assisted by Bajrami just before halftime, and Bajrami himself doubled the lead.
Salernitana pulled one back through Antonio Candreva’s penalty in the 57th minute. Then, when it seemed like Sassuolo would secure a win and climb out of the relegation zone, Giulio Maggiore scored the equalizer.
His goal in stoppage time earned Salernitana a point, their first in four matches, but they still sit at the bottom of the table with only seven games left, almost certain of relegation, being 10 points behind Sassuolo.
Sassuolo now has 25 points, tied with Frosinone and Empoli, both of whom have a game in hand.
Empoli plays against Torino on Saturday, while Frosinone faces Bologna a day later.
