The United States began their group stage in the Davis Cup with a 3-0 win over Chile in Zhuhai, China, on Wednesday.
Brandon Nakashima won his match against Alejandro Tabilo with scores of 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (3), and Reilly Opelka defeated Cristian Garin 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3). These two singles victories gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead.
The singles matches were each over five hours long, and the U.S. then brought in Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram for the doubles match, which they won 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) against Tomas Barrios Vera and Matias Soto.
This week, four groups are competing in different cities to qualify for the Final 8 knockout stage, which will be held in Malaga, Spain, in November. The top two teams from each group will move on.
The U.S., which has won 32 Davis Cup titles, the most recent in 2007, is aiming to reach the quarterfinals for the second time since the Davis Cup Finals began in 2019. Earlier this year, the Americans won 4-0 against Ukraine in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Later on Wednesday in Bologna, Italy, the defending champion, was set to play Brazil in Group A. In Valencia, Spain was scheduled to face the Czech Republic in Group B, and in Group D in Manchester, England, Britain was set to play Finland.
On Tuesday, Belgium won 2-1 against the Netherlands, Australia beat France 2-1, Germany won 3-0 against Slovakia without their No. 2-ranked player Alexander Zverev, and Canada defeated Argentina 2-1.
