After defeating the Boston Bruins 2-0 on Monday night, the Washington Capitals players checked the results of other NHL games. They reminded each other that only their performance matters.
“We focus on our game, and we know where we stand,” goalie Charlie Lindgren said, having saved 16 shots for a shutout. Just one more win, and they secure a playoff spot.
With John Carlson scoring a crucial goal, Lindgren making key saves, and Nic Dowd securing victory with an empty-net goal, a win against Philadelphia on Tuesday would guarantee the Capitals a playoff berth, no matter what happens in other games.
“It’s up to us, and that’s the most important thing,” said All-Star winger Tom Wilson.
If they qualify, the Capitals will be the second wild card in the Eastern Conference, facing the New York Rangers, who won the Presidents’ Trophy.
Boston, on the other hand, still vies for the Atlantic Division title against Ottawa on Tuesday. They missed a chance to clinch it by losing to the Caps, unable to match their opponent’s urgency.
“I’d say ‘struggle’ is an understatement for how we played,” said coach Jim Montgomery. “Washington showed the desperation we wanted to see.”
Dylan Strome epitomized that intensity, setting up Carlson’s goal with a faceoff win and controlled play. He’s eager for his first NHL playoff experience with fans in attendance, outside the pandemic bubble.
