Commanders’ rookie defensive tackle Johnny Newton is not yet cleared to play.

The team announced on Friday that Newton has been placed on the non-football injury list. In January, he underwent foot surgery, followed by another surgery to repair a Jones fracture after being drafted in April’s second round by the Commanders.

Newton can return to practice with the team once activated from the list, but until then, he cannot participate in training camp.

Last season at Illinois, Newton had an impressive performance with 52 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and four blocked kicks, earning him a spot on the All-America team.
