The Washington Nationals have placed third baseman Nick Senzel on unconditional waivers.
The Nationals announced on Friday. Senzel had signed a one-year, $2 million contract in December. The team had designated him for assignment on July 6 in hopes of trading him.
Senzel has a batting average of .209 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 64 games this season.
He spent his first five major league seasons with the Reds, but injuries have been a challenge throughout his career. He began this season on the injured list due to a broken right thumb sustained during spring training.
After the Reds did not offer him a contract for this season, Senzel became a free agent. The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft has a career batting average of .235 with 40 home runs and 143 RBIs.
