The Chicago White Sox let go of infielder Mike Moustakas and outfielder Kevin Pillar on Friday. Both players were at spring training on minor league contracts. This move increases the chances of Gavin Sheets making it to the team’s opening-day roster.
Moustakas, aged 35, had a batting average of .247 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs across 112 games with Colorado and the Los Angeles Angels last season. During spring training with the White Sox, he had a .195 batting average.
Pillar, also 35 years old, played for Atlanta last season, hitting .228 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs in 81 games. His batting average for Chicago during spring training was .250.
Additionally, the White Sox sent right-hander Prelander Berroa to Triple-A Charlotte. Berroa was obtained in a trade with Seattle in February.
Currently, the White Sox have 43 players remaining in their big league camp, including 24 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders, and nine outfielders. They will face Detroit on opening day next Thursday.
Sheets, who can play first base and the corner outfield positions, has a batting average of .296 with three home runs and five RBIs in spring training. He was drafted in the second round of the 2017 amateur draft and is the son of former major league outfielder Larry Sheets.
