Brentford manager Thomas Frank has weighed in on who he believes could be England’s next Ballon d’Or recipient.
England boasts a rich history with the prestigious award, starting with Stanley Matthews in 1956, followed by Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan in subsequent years. However, the nation hasn’t seen a winner since Michael Owen in 2001, leaving fans eager for the next standout talent.
While Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham and Tottenham’s Harry Kane are often touted as potential candidates, Frank believes that Manchester City’s Phil Foden stands out as the most promising contender.
Expressing his views ahead of Brentford’s clash with City, Frank praised Foden’s versatility and impact on the pitch, suggesting he has the potential to reach the pinnacle of football achievement.
“Phil Foden is a very good player. For me, he’s the closest I think England get to potentially getting a Ballon d’Or winner in the future,” Frank remarked. “I think he’s got that potential to get to that level.”
Highlighting Foden’s skill set and work ethic, Frank emphasized his ability to influence matches and adapt to various situations, citing his recent hat-trick against Brentford as evidence.
Foden has been instrumental for Manchester City this season, tallying impressive numbers in both goals and assists across competitions. Despite his young age, he has already earned recognition on the international stage, with England appearances reflecting his growing stature in the football world.
As City vies for the Premier League title, Foden’s contributions will be pivotal in their pursuit of success.
