Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has lauded Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk following his decisive performance in their 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the EFL Cup final on Sunday (February 25).

Van Dijk, 32, played a crucial role in the recent match, operating as a left-sided center-back. Besides scoring the winning goal in the 118th minute, he showcased his all-around excellence by completing 92 of 101 passes, winning one of three tackles, seven of 10 duels, and making seven clearances during his 120-minute stint on the pitch.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Sherwood offered glowing praise for the Dutchman, attributing Liverpool’s historic 10th EFL Cup triumph in part to his contributions. He remarked (h/t The Boot Room):

Tim Sherwood

“When you have Virgil van Dijk in your lineup, you always stand a chance because he’s a defensive stalwart while also posing a threat going forward. It’s remarkable! Is there anything he lacks? He’s fast, elegant, and successful – I’m not envious at all! He even handles criticism with grace! His impact is immeasurable.”

So far this season, Van Dijk has featured in 29 out of 30 club matches across various competitions. Alongside his offensive contributions, which include four goals and two assists, he has played a pivotal role in securing eight clean sheets for Liverpool in 2,583 minutes of play.
