Rafael Nadal’s uncle, Toni, who has been a significant figure in his nephew’s career as both coach and mentor, has stepped forward to lend his support amidst the recent controversy surrounding Nadal’s involvement with Saudi Arabia.
Last month, Nadal assumed the role of ambassador for the Saudi Tennis Federation, a move that has stirred debate within the tennis community. Despite the scrutiny, Nadal has found solidarity from various quarters, with his uncle Toni being the latest to voice his backing.
In a recent interview with the Spanish publication El Mundo, Toni affirmed his endorsement of Nadal’s decision, emphasizing that his nephew is driven by a belief in the potential to positively impact and empower young tennis enthusiasts in the Gulf region.
“My nephew was approached to encourage youth participation in sports in that country. Rafa firmly believes that his contributions can foster change and enhance the lives of many young individuals, much like his endeavors in Cuba or Venezuela,” remarked Toni.
He further underscored that the most constructive way to foster sports engagement in a nation like Saudi Arabia is not through isolation but through nurturing its youth.
“In today’s world, there is a pervasive hypocrisy. How does one truly aid a nation’s progress—by shunning it or by guiding its youth towards positive pursuits?” queried Toni, advocating for engagement over boycotts.
