According to the arrest warrant, an off-duty officer present at the event responded after attendees reported hearing gunshots. Several eyewitnesses identified Brown as the shooter, although no firearm was found on him at the time of his arrest.

Investigators did, however, recover two spent shell casings and an empty gun holster at the scene, which supported the claims of gunfire.
