Lakers’ deal for Hornets center Mark Williams canceled due to failed physical, in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Lakers canceled their trade to acquire Mark Williams from Charlotte after he failed his physical, according to a source who spoke on Saturday night.

The source, who remained anonymous, said that the Lakers did not plan to announce the reason for pulling back the deal publicly.

On Wednesday night, the Lakers agreed to send rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, and some draft considerations to the Hornets for Williams, a 23-year-old center who is in his third year in the NBA. Williams, a former first-round pick, was seen as a potential replacement for Anthony Davis, who was traded to Dallas along with Max Christie for superstar Luka Doncic.

The trade would have also sent the Lakers’ 2031 first-round pick and a 2030 first-round pick swap to Charlotte.

However, the Lakers decided to cancel the trade after learning more about Williams’ injury history. He has struggled with back issues and other injuries, playing only 84 out of 212 possible NBA games in his three seasons.

In a statement on social media, the Hornets said, “We are excited to welcome Mark back to our Hornets organization. After the other team aggressively pursued Mark, we made the difficult decision to move him. We have always held great respect for Mark’s talent, work ethic, and character. We are thrilled to see him rejoin our roster as a dynamic presence at the starting center position. His return strengthens our team, and we look forward to the impact he will make on and off the court.”

The Lakers had no concerns about the trade initially, according to general manager Rob Pelinka. Coach JJ Redick, who knows Williams personally as they both played at Duke, said on Thursday, “Just feel like he’s a really good fit now, and he’s a really good fit for the future.”

The cancellation of the trade adds to the uncertainty surrounding the Lakers, who have won five straight and 11 of their last 13 games despite many roster changes.

On Saturday, the Lakers beat Indiana 124-117, even without LeBron James and Doncic.

Now, the Lakers are left without a proven big man to play next to Jaxson Hayes, who was expected to move to the bench after Williams’ arrival. Against the Pacers, the backup center was 6-foot-10 Trey Jemison III, who has played for four different teams in the past two seasons and joined the Lakers less than a month ago.

The Lakers may look to the buyout market for veteran big men, but it doesn’t seem like a promising option. The Lakers also lost the roster spot they created by trading two players for Williams. However, they could get help from within the team.

Christian Wood has missed the entire season due to knee surgery in September, and while there hasn’t been a recent update on his return, he wasn’t expected to miss the whole season initially.

Jemison and backup big man Christian Koloko are on two-way contracts, meaning they wouldn’t be eligible for the playoffs.

Without Knecht and Reddish, the Lakers’ wing depth is thinner. Knecht, who was a strong shooter with a 37-point game earlier in the season, struggled defensively and had limited playing time before the trade.

The Lakers acquire center Mark Williams from the Hornets in exchange for Knecht and Reddish in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Lakers are trading rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, and draft picks to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for center Mark Williams, a person familiar with the deal.

The source spoke on the condition of anonymity as the trade had not yet been finalized on Wednesday night.

In addition to Williams, the Hornets will receive the Lakers’ 2031 first-round pick and a first-round pick swap in 2030.

Williams, one of the NBA’s promising young centers, adds to the Lakers’ revamped roster. The Lakers made a big move recently by acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks for Anthony Davis.

Williams addresses a major need for the Lakers, who had been left with Jaxson Hayes as their only veteran center after Davis left and Christian Wood was out due to an injury.

At 7-foot-2, Williams has faced injury struggles in his three seasons with the Hornets, playing only 84 games because of back issues. However, when healthy, he’s shown his potential.

This season, Williams has averaged 16 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game in 22 games. He has thrived in pick-and-roll situations while playing alongside LaMelo Ball.

Williams, who is familiar with Lakers coach JJ Redick from their time at Duke, should mesh well with Doncic, who can set him up for lob passes and pick-and-roll opportunities. Williams will also be expected to contribute defensively for the Lakers, especially after Davis’ departure.

Williams has posted seven double-doubles in his last 11 games, including a 31-point, 13-rebound performance against the Jazz. He scored 38 points in a loss to Memphis last month, but his play has been inconsistent. In a recent game against Milwaukee, he struggled with just six points and five rebounds.

Williams appears excited about the trade, sharing gold and purple hearts on social media late Wednesday.

This is the second center the Hornets have traded this season. They previously dealt 7-foot Nick Richards and a 2025 second-round pick to Phoenix for guard Josh Okogie and three future second-round picks.

The Hornets are clearly focused on long-term growth under new owners Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, collecting multiple assets. The team now has their first-round pick for the next seven years, plus several other picks from future trades.

Knecht, who was the Lakers’ first-round pick last year, has averaged 9.4 points and 3.1 rebounds as a rookie. He started 12 games, including a 37-point performance with nine 3-pointers, but his playing time has decreased in 2025.

Reddish has averaged 3.3 points per game in his second season with the Lakers. He started 26 games last year but has played much less under Redick.

Doncic, who has been out since Christmas with a strained left calf, is expected to make his Lakers debut on Saturday against the Indiana Pacers. The Lakers will decide that in the morning.

With this deal, the Lakers have traded seven of the 13 players on their opening night roster. The trade also cleared a spot for the Lakers to add another player to their roster.

Norman Powell leads Clippers past Hornets in Los Angeles

Norman Powell scored 27 points, and Kawhi Leonard added 21 points as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Charlotte Hornets 112-104 on Friday night.

Ivica Zubac and James Harden each scored 14 points, Derrick Jones Jr. had 12, and Amir Coffey came off the bench to score 10 points. The Clippers won their fourth game in the last five.

Miles Bridges led the Hornets with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Vasilije Micic added 20 points. The Hornets lost for the fifth time in their last six games.

Moussa Diabate contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, and Josh Green posted 10 points. However, Charlotte struggled with 3-point shooting, making just 7 of 30 attempts. Bridges was 1-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Powell shot 11-for-15 from the field, including two 3-pointers. Leonard hit four of the Clippers’ 11 3-pointers, which helped offset the team’s 18 turnovers and poor free-throw shooting (9-for-16 from the starters).

The Hornets, missing injured guard LaMelo Ball, got close in the final quarter, cutting a 10-point deficit to 97-95. But Powell’s basket and Harden’s 3-pointer extended the Clippers’ lead. Charlotte was down 106-99 after Micic made two free throws with 3:11 left, but Powell and Leonard’s quick back-to-back baskets helped seal the win.

The Clippers led 53-48 at halftime and expanded their lead in the third quarter but had trouble fully pulling away from the Hornets.

Powell has scored 20 or more points in 12 of his last 13 games. Harden, despite six turnovers in four of the last five games, had 10 assists on Friday night.

The Hornets, now 1-4 in their nine-game homestand, outscored the Clippers 35-24 in bench points.
