With LaMelo Ball back in action, the Hornets have their full starting lineup on the court together

LaMelo Ball made his return to the court on Monday night against the Philadelphia 76ers, marking the first time this season that all five of the Charlotte Hornets’ starting players were on the floor together.

Ball had been sidelined for the previous seven games due to a strained calf.

The Hornets had planned to start Ball with Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges, Josh Green, and Mark Williams at the beginning of training camp. However, Williams was injured at the start of the season, and both Miller and Bridges missed time due to injuries. Then, Ball got hurt, and the Hornets went 1-6 without him.

Before the injury, Ball was playing at an All-Star level, averaging 31.1 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game.

With the Hornets sitting at 7-18, they will need everyone to contribute if they hope to get back into the playoff race. They were in 13th place in the Eastern Conference before Monday’s game.

LaMelo Ball looks to shoot the ball

Ball shared that he had been working on improving his shot and studying how different defenses have played against him while he was on the court, trying to learn how to respond to them.

“It’s always great getting guys back,” Ball said. “I’m excited to play for real.”

When asked about his expectations for playing with the full group again, Ball said, “It’s been a minute, so we’ll see.”

Ball is expected to benefit from having Williams back, as it will allow for more pick-and-roll chances.

“He’s 7-foot-2 and he can move, all of that type of stuff,” Ball said. “So that is great having Mark back.”

The 76ers were without Joel Embiid, who is recovering from a right sinus fracture and will be re-evaluated in a week. Rookie Jared McCain was also out due to a torn meniscus that required surgery.

Bulls stifle Hornets’ offense, sail to victory

The Chicago Bulls defeated the Charlotte Hornets 109-95 on Friday, controlling the game almost from start to finish with a strong defensive effort to end their three-game homestand.

Chicago opened with a 12-2 run in the first quarter, with Ayo Dosunmu leading the charge. Dosunmu, who scored a team-high 19 points, contributed seven consecutive points during this early stretch.

He was one of six Bulls players in double figures, including all five starters. Coby White added 18 points, scoring half of them in the final five minutes to help keep the Hornets at a distance.

Josh Giddey also had a solid all-around game with 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. Zach LaVine scored 13 points, while Jalen Smith, starting in place of the ill Nikola Vucevic, posted 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Smith also contributed to the Bulls’ strong defense with five blocks, helping hold the Hornets to just 35.7% shooting and a poor 8-for-46 (17.4%) from beyond the arc.

Lonzo Ball finished with 10 points off the bench and also recorded seven rebounds and four assists. He was the only Ball brother playing that night, with Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball still out due to a calf injury.

Chicago maintained a lead that ranged from 10 to 18 points for most of the game, although Charlotte briefly made it close early in the second quarter. Miles Bridges, in his first game since Nov. 19 after recovering from a knee injury, helped Charlotte pull within three points with a layup to start the second quarter. He finished with 14 points.

The Hornets managed to trim the lead to eight points in the fourth quarter, but an 8-0 run from the Bulls, with Ball scoring five of those points, sealed the win.

Brandon Miller led Charlotte with 21 points but struggled with shooting, going just 3-for-15 from three-point range and committing a game-high seven turnovers. Mark Williams shot 6-for-7 from the field, adding 15 points and nine rebounds, but the Hornets fell for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

The Hornets and Bulls look to bounce back after a four-day break

The Chicago Bulls will wrap up a three-game home stretch on Friday when they face the Charlotte Hornets, both teams returning to play after long breaks.

Both teams last played on Sunday, taking a four-day break after being eliminated from the NBA Cup. Charlotte finished 0-4 in East Group A, while the Bulls went 2-2 in Group C.

Charlotte comes back from a win, snapping an eight-game losing streak with a 113-109 victory over Indiana on Sunday. Brandon Miller led the Hornets with 26 points, including two crucial free throws with seven seconds left to seal the win.

That win was Charlotte’s first since losing guard LaMelo Ball to a calf strain. Ball had been on a hot streak, scoring between 32 and 50 points in four straight games before getting injured in the fourth quarter of a Nov. 27 loss to Miami.

Ball, who averages 31.1 points and 6.9 assists per game, will not play on Friday, but he is reportedly getting closer to returning.

Without LaMelo Ball, there won’t be a reunion of the Ball brothers on the court, as Chicago has had Lonzo Ball in the lineup for five of its last six games after a nearly three-year absence. Lonzo Ball scored a season-high nine points and recorded four assists in a 132-123 loss to Indiana on Dec. 6.

Adding to Charlotte’s troubles, they’ve also been without Tre Mann, LaMelo Ball’s backup, who has been sidelined since Nov. 23 with a back issue.

LaMelo Ball reacts in the 2nd half

Hornets coach Charles Lee said the team’s performance staff has done a good job adjusting to the injuries, which also include forward Miles Bridges.

With both Ball and Mann out, Vasilije Milic has started at point guard for the past six games, scoring at least 13 points in four of them.

The Bulls head into Friday’s game on a two-game losing streak, after defeats to Indiana and Philadelphia, including a 108-100 loss to the 76ers on Sunday. Zach LaVine, the team’s top scorer with 22.1 points per game, scored 32 and 30 points in the two recent losses.

LaVine’s individual performance has been impressive, especially after a foot injury limited him to just 25 games last season. Before the injury, LaVine averaged at least 23.7 points per game over five seasons.

LaVine told the Chicago Sun-Times that while he may need to lead the offense at times, this season has been more about playing in spurts, and that’s not the team’s current style.

Nikola Vucevic, the second-leading scorer for the Bulls with 21 points per game, has had quiet games recently, scoring 13 points in each of the two losses. He had scored 39 points in a Dec. 5 win over San Antonio.

Vucevic is shooting a career-high 64.2 percent on 2-point attempts this season. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s defense has allowed opponents to shoot 55.8 percent from inside the 3-point arc, which could be an area the Bulls take advantage of.

Hornets snap eight-game losing streak with victory over Pacers

Brandon Miller scored 26 points as the Charlotte Hornets ended an eight-game losing streak by defeating the Indiana Pacers 113-109 on Sunday in Indianapolis.

Miller also grabbed six rebounds and handed out five assists, sealing the win with two free throws with 7.2 seconds remaining in the game.

Vasilije Micic contributed 18 points and nine assists, Cody Martin added 14 points, and Nick Richards finished with nine points and 14 rebounds.

T.J. McConnell came off the bench to score a career-high 30 points for the Pacers, while fellow reserve Jarace Walker added 15 points.

McConnell made 14 of 19 shots and had six assists, helping Indiana’s bench score a total of 60 points.

Miller’s finger roll with 59 seconds left gave the Hornets a 110-104 lead, but the Pacers quickly responded. Tyrese Haliburton hit a pull-up jumper, and Bennedict Mathurin stole Martin’s inbound pass and scored to make it 110-108.

After Josh Green made 1 of 2 free throws for Charlotte, Haliburton was fouled with eight seconds left. He made his first free throw and missed the second on purpose, which was rebounded by Miller.

Indiana Pacers (NBA)

Indiana missed their first six shots of the game, allowing Charlotte to jump to a 9-0 lead.

McConnell and Obi Toppin sparked the Pacers, who briefly took the lead, but the Hornets ended the first quarter strong. Green’s dunk at the buzzer gave Charlotte a 28-24 lead.

McConnell, who had 14 points in the first half in under 10 minutes, helped Indiana score a season-high 38 points in the second quarter.

At the other end, Micic had 13 points and four assists in the first half, and Charlotte led 63-62 at halftime after shooting 68.4 percent in the second quarter due to some defensive mistakes by the Pacers.

Indiana briefly took the lead in the third quarter with a jumper from Pascal Siakam, followed by Haliburton’s first basket of the game.

Seth Curry and Miller helped the Hornets regain the lead at 83-76 before McConnell led a 6-0 run to end the third quarter, cutting Charlotte’s lead to just one point heading into the final period.

Pacers aim to capitalize on Hornets’ struggles

Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle understands the struggles of the Charlotte Hornets, but that won’t stop him from taking advantage of their situation when they face off in Indianapolis on Sunday.

The Pacers snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Chicago Bulls 132-123 on Friday, following two road losses to the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets. Chicago had played the night before, which helped Indiana secure the win.

Now, the Pacers will meet the Hornets, who are coming off an 116-102 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. This was their eighth straight loss.

Carlisle acknowledges the challenge of playing against teams on back-to-back games. “Brooklyn caught us on a horrific back-to-back, and we caught these guys (Bulls) on a tough one,” Carlisle said. “And Sunday we’re going to catch Charlotte on a back-to-back. We’ve got to take advantage of these opportunities.”

Indiana used their day off to improve certain areas, like offensive spacing and movement. “We had the longest shootaround I’ve had since I’ve been here because we had a lot of things we wanted to clean up,” Carlisle said.

“Our spacing was better — it opened up more opportunities for us to attack the paint. Guys did a great job of focusing in the morning, and that really carried over into the game.”

Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets

Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers with 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and added eight assists. Pascal Siakam contributed 21 points. The Pacers performed well in various areas, shooting 60% from three-point range, outrebounding Chicago 46-38, and dominating the points in the paint 56-42.

Obi Toppin, who had 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench, said, “I know we’re past last year, but at the end of the day, we were one of the fastest teams, if not the fastest team, in the league. We score most of our points in transition. We get those easy buckets, then when we get into the halfcourt, everybody has their rhythm.”

The Hornets defeated the Pacers 103-83 in their first meeting this season on Nov. 8, holding Indiana to its lowest score since December 2022.

Charlotte has struggled recently, losing several games due to an injury crisis. Despite trailing the Cavaliers 40-18 after the first quarter, the Hornets fought back, outscoring Cleveland 84-76 in the remaining three quarters, despite missing seven players, including LaMelo Ball (left calf).

Brandon Miller, who scored 25 points, was the only player from Charlotte’s top six scorers to play in the game. Hornets coach Charles Lee praised his team’s effort, saying, “Super proud of the group. Obviously no one in this organization or that locker room wants to lose a game in general and not lose another one on this streak we’re on.

But I would say the competitive spirit of this group was on display tonight. I’m so encouraged by so much that I’m seeing from the group. The strength we are gaining, the competitiveness that continues to go to another level … there’s a ton of resilience and fight.”

Knicks rally from slow start to dominate Hornets

Karl-Anthony Towns achieved his 12th consecutive double-double, leading the New York Knicks to a dominant 125-101 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night.

Towns scored 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Knicks. All five of their starters scored in double digits, with OG Anunoby adding 25 points, Jalen Brunson scoring 24, Mikal Bridges contributing 19, and Josh Hart scoring 18. Hart also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

The Hornets were led by Brandon Miller, who scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds, but they were outshot 53.9% to 44.9% from the field. Vasilije Micic added 14 points and 12 assists, and Seth Curry came off the bench to score 18 points.

After leading 65-62 at halftime, the Knicks took control of the game in the third quarter. Charlotte stayed close early, with Miller hitting a floater to bring the deficit down to one point.

However, New York responded with a 12-0 run, pushing the lead to 77-64. Miller briefly halted the run with two free throws, but the Knicks answered with a 13-2 run, capped by a three-point play from Towns.

With a 103-78 lead going into the fourth quarter, the Knicks never let up.

The Hornets started strong, scoring 20 of the first 27 points and leading 32-30 after the first quarter. They extended their lead to 51-44 with 6:20 left in the second quarter. However, a three-pointer by Hart helped the Knicks close out the first half on a 21-11 run, taking a three-point lead into halftime.

Knicks focus on returning to form as they prepare to face the Hornets at home

New York Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau isn’t celebrating just because his team made it to the knockout round of the NBA Cup.

Thibodeau is keeping his focus on the upcoming game against the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night, making sure the Knicks are prepared.

On Tuesday night, the Knicks finished a perfect 4-0 run in East Group A of the in-season tournament, beating the Orlando Magic 121-106. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 23 points, and Jalen Brunson added 21, leading a balanced offense with six players in double figures.

As the No. 2 seed in the East quarterfinals of the Cup, New York will play the Atlanta Hawks next Wednesday, but Thibodeau isn’t focused on that just yet.

“I’m just worried about Charlotte,” Thibodeau said.

What has stood out to Thibodeau is the team’s ball movement. The Knicks recorded 30 assists in each of their last two games. They only had 20 assists when they beat Charlotte 99-98 last Friday.

“I love how unselfish we were,” Thibodeau said after the win on Tuesday. “I thought we made great reads. When we got into the paint, just making the extra pass, creating the right space and then cutting, which got us going downhill.

“When you do that, everyone finds rhythm, and you’re finding good shots. You’re creating good shots for each other. And that’s everyone working together.”

The Hornets, on the other hand, lost 110-104 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. This was their sixth straight loss, with five of those games being decided by six points or less.

Hornets coach Charles Lee is hoping his team can start faster on Thursday after falling behind by as much as 18 in the first half against Philadelphia.

Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets

“For most of those games (during the losing streak), we were in the lead or right there. I just didn’t think that from the jump we were ready to hoop (Tuesday),” Lee said. “I thought that Philadelphia’s physicality kind of took us out of our rhythm offensively. … In the second half, we did what we usually do.

“We competed a lot harder, we were a lot sharper and we gave ourselves a chance, but you have to be ready to play in the first half.”

Brandon Miller has been performing well during the Hornets’ losing streak, averaging 26.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists over the last six games. Charlotte has been relying on him since star guard LaMelo Ball got hurt with a calf strain, expected to keep him out for two weeks.

Vasilije Micic has been filling in for Ball and has been contributing 9.7 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game in his three starts.

The Hornets’ loss on Friday was their fifth straight to the Knicks. Charlotte hasn’t beaten New York since March 7, 2023.

Tyrese Maxey’s strong performance in the final moments leads the 76ers to a win over the Hornets

Paul George scored 29 points, matching his season high, and Tyrese Maxey finished with the last 11 points for the 76ers in their 110-104 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night.

Maxey contributed 10 of his 21 points from free throws as Philadelphia won back-to-back games for the first time this season, despite losing a 19-point lead in the second half. Jared McCain added 17 points off the bench, Kelly Oubre Jr. had 14 points, and George also had eight assists.

Brandon Miller scored 34 points, and Nick Richards had 22 points and 14 rebounds for Charlotte, but the Hornets lost their sixth consecutive game. Cody Martin scored 12 points, and Tidjane Salaun finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hornets were down by 14 with less than 11 minutes to go but managed to cut the lead to 91-89 with more than five minutes remaining. Miller helped with three 3-pointers in less than 2 1/2 minutes.

After Philadelphia went nearly two minutes without scoring, the Hornets tied the game at 95-95 with 3:10 left on two free throws from KJ Simpson. Charlotte took the lead at 100-99 after a turnover led to Miller’s 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining.

Maxey responded by hitting 3 of 4 free throws in eight seconds to give the 76ers the lead back. Simpson tied it with two free throws at the 44-second mark. Maxey’s drive with 29.7 seconds left put Philadelphia back ahead, and he added four more free throws and a basket to seal the victory.

Charlotte dominated the rebounding battle, finishing with a 47-31 advantage. Guerschon Yabusele led the 76ers with 12 rebounds. George made 6 of 9 3-pointers, and Oubre, who used to play for the Hornets, hit 4 of 5 from long range. Miller made 7 of 16 3-pointers, more than half of Charlotte’s 13 total 3-pointers.

De’Andre Hunter’s clutch scoring in the final moments leads the Hawks to a win over the Hornets

De’Andre Hunter scored two quick baskets within 10 seconds in the final minute, and Jalen Johnson added 20 points to help the Atlanta Hawks defeat the Charlotte Hornets 107-104 on Saturday night.

The Hawks managed to hold on after Charlotte made a late push, creating a thrilling finish.

Jalen Johnson scores in the 1st half

The Hawks increased their lead to 91-82 with under six minutes left, but the Hornets made a comeback. Miller’s tip-in tied the game at 103-103 with 42.9 seconds remaining, but Hunter then scored the next four points.

Miller hit a 3-pointer to bring the Hornets within 103-102 with 14.6 seconds left, but Hunter made two free throws. After a Charlotte timeout, Miller missed a 3-pointer, and Okongwu sealed the win with two more free throws.

Miller has now scored 20 or more points in seven consecutive games. Richards, who had been out with a rib injury since Nov. 1, returned to the court.

Charlotte played its second game without LaMelo Ball, who is out for at least two weeks with a strained left calf.

The Hawks led 55-50 at halftime after holding Charlotte to just 18 points in the second quarter.

Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball is expected to be out for a minimum of two weeks due to a left calf strain

Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball will be out for at least two weeks due to a strained left calf.

Ball felt pain in his calf after the Hornets’ loss to the Miami Heat on Wednesday and missed the game against the New York Knicks on Friday. The team said he will be reevaluated on December 11, which is two weeks after the injury happened.

Ball has been performing well for the Hornets, averaging 40.3 points in his last four games.

For the season, he is averaging a career-high 31.1 points and 4.7 three-pointers per game, which is second in the NBA. He also averages 5.4 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 1.1 steals in 18 games started.

Ball has struggled with injuries, especially to his ankles, since entering the NBA as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 draft.

As the only player in Hornets history to receive a max contract extension, Ball has played in just 202 games with 182 starts in five seasons.

LaMelo Ball looks to shoot the ball

The Hornets also announced that guard Tre Mann has been diagnosed with disk irritation in his lower back. He has been absent from the lineup since November 23, when the team played Milwaukee. Mann will continue with his rehabilitation and will be reevaluated in two weeks.

“They are competitors and they want to be out there on the court to compete and hoop, but they also want to be out there for their teammates,” said Hornets coach Charles Lee before the game against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.

“I just walked past ’Melo as I was coming in here to do media, and he’s like, ‘I’m going to take care of everything I need to do on this return to play program and I’m going to attack it with the right mindset.’ I have all the confidence in the world in our performance staff and in those guys.”

After a tough defeat, the Heat aim to bounce back against the Hornets

The Miami Heat will try to bounce back from a tough loss when they face the Charlotte Hornets in North Carolina on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, the Heat lost 106-103 at home to the Milwaukee Bucks. The defeat stopped Miami from winning three games in a row for the first time this season and almost ended their chances of advancing in the NBA Cup.

“It’s disappointing,” said Miami coach Erik Spoelstra. “We’ve had two ridiculously close games. We wanted to be there in Vegas (for the NBA Cup semifinals), but that’s behind us now, and we’ll focus on getting ready for Charlotte.”

Miami players Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier both had chances to win or tie the game against Milwaukee in the final moments.

“I saw open looks. I saw in and out,” Spoelstra said. “Terry’s was like a 27-foot shot so that’s different, but it’s open. That’s all you can (ask for).”

Miami’s total points in Tuesday’s game were the third lowest of the season.

Jimmy Butler led the Heat with 23 points, with 11 of those coming from free throws. The Heat lost despite the fact that Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was out with a knee injury.

Meanwhile, the Hornets are frustrated after losing four of their last five games. LaMelo Ball scored 50 and 44 points in their last two games, but Charlotte lost both of them.

Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets

Ball scored more than half of the Hornets’ points in a 95-84 home loss to the Orlando Magic on Monday.

“Defensively, the guys did a really good job of executing the game plan,” said Charlotte coach Charles Lee. “To give up 95 points and we were fouling toward the end of the game, I think just shows the effort and the competitiveness and togetherness.”

However, the Hornets hurt themselves by committing 27 turnovers.

“We got ourselves in trouble with some of our turnovers,” Lee said. “I thought most of it is self-inflicted again. Things that we can control. I would love to just see us fix some of our transition turnovers that we have right now.”

The Hornets have struggled with offense lately, making adjustments because of injuries to their post players. As a result, they have relied more on Ball and Brandon Miller to score, which could help them in the future.

“I see two guys who are very talented, work extremely hard, care very much about the game, their teammates and the process they have to go through every day to continue to get better,” Lee said.

Terry Rozier, who used to play for the Hornets, will return to Charlotte with the Heat. He scored 17 points off the bench against Milwaukee on Tuesday.

“He’s a competitor and X-factor player,” Spoelstra said. “He’s in this role for us now.”

This will be Miami’s second trip to Charlotte this season. The Heat won 114-106 on October 26, with Butler scoring 26 points and adding eight assists. Ball scored 27 points for the Hornets, but Miller did not play due to a hip injury. Charlotte committed 20 turnovers in that game.

A powerful fourth quarter leads the Magic to victory over the Hornets

Franz Wagner scored 21 points, and Jonathan Isaac made three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Orlando Magic overcome three tough quarters and defeat the Charlotte Hornets 95-84 on Monday night.

Thanks to their strong perimeter shooting, Orlando turned a 62-58 deficit into an 88-77 lead in the final quarter, spoiling a great performance from Hornets guard LaMelo Ball.

Magic bench players Moritz Wagner (16 points), Cole Anthony (16), Isaac (11), and Anthony Black (10) stepped up when needed, helping the team win for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

Ball finished with 44 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Brandon Miller added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ball made 17 of 30 shots, including four 3-pointers on 11 attempts.

The Hornets, who began a five-game homestand, had won their previous four home games. However, despite their strong effort, Charlotte has now lost four of its last five games. The Hornets committed 27 turnovers in the game.

Orlando’s Gary Harris, a starting guard, had to leave the game after seven minutes due to a strained left hamstring, and Black stepped in to help fill the gap.

Anthony got Orlando going in the fourth quarter, scoring the team’s first five points. Then Isaac played a key role in helping the Magic take control.

In the end, Orlando outscored Charlotte 37-22 in the fourth, but they still only shot 39.4% from the field for the game. Charlotte shot 41.3% overall.

With 6:57 left in the third quarter, Ball made two free throws to reach 25 points and give the Hornets a 54-49 lead.

The Magic stayed close, trailing by just four points, 62-58, heading into the final quarter.

Ball made a late 3-pointer to give the Hornets a 46-42 lead at halftime. He had 19 points by then, while Miller added 11. No Orlando starter had more than six points in the first half.
