Chicago Blackhawks Fire Head Coach Luke Richardson After Disappointing Start to 2024-25 Season

The Chicago Blackhawks announced on Thursday that they have fired head coach Luke Richardson. The decision comes after a disappointing start to the 2024-25 NHL season, with the team struggling to find success under his leadership. The Blackhawks, currently at the bottom of the league standings, made this change as part of their ongoing efforts to improve performance.

Richardson’s third season with the Blackhawks has been particularly challenging. With a record of 8-16-2, Chicago has the worst mark in the NHL. The team has also endured a four-game losing streak and eight losses in their past 10 games. This lack of improvement led to the decision to let go of Richardson.

Richardson’s Final Record and Impact on the Blackhawks

During his tenure, Richardson finished with an overall record of 57-118-15. Despite his best efforts, the Blackhawks failed to find any sustained success under his leadership. The team struggled in various areas, including offense, where they ranked second worst in the league in goals scored, averaging just 2.42 goals per game.

Following Richardson’s departure, Anders Sorensen was named as the interim head coach. Sorensen, who previously served as head coach for the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago’s AHL affiliate, will now take on the responsibility of guiding the team for the remainder of the season. The Blackhawks are hoping that this change will help spark a turnaround.

General Manager’s Statement on the Coaching Change and Expectations

Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson issued a statement expressing gratitude to Richardson for his contributions. Davidson acknowledged that the decision to part ways was difficult but necessary for the team’s rebuilding process. He highlighted that the team had not met expectations this season, and a coaching change was required to improve execution moving forward.

One of the main concerns for the Blackhawks has been the performance of Connor Bedard, the 19-year-old star and reigning Calder Trophy winner. After a stellar rookie season where he recorded 61 points in 68 games, Bedard has struggled to match that level of play, registering only 19 points in 26 games so far this season. His underperformance has added to the team’s struggles.

Rangers aim for a positive outlook as they face the Blackhawks in Chicago

The New York Rangers are not giving up on the season despite having lost five out of their last six games.

Their recent struggles have dropped their record to 17-20-1, but the Rangers are still feeling hopeful as they prepare for their game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

Things went wrong for the Rangers on Saturday when they lost to the Washington Capitals 7-4. New York was trailing by just one goal, 5-4, after Mika Zibanejad scored in the third period at 13:04. However, Washington responded quickly, scoring twice in the last six minutes of the game.

Even though the season hasn’t gone as expected for the Rangers, who were the Presidents’ Trophy winners last year, Zibanejad remains confident that the team can turn things around.

“That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? What’s our option? What’s our option? Just say, ‘We’re done with the season?’ No, we can’t,” Zibanejad said. “I think we have a lot of faith in the guys that are here.”

Zibanejad is focused only on the next game.

“We have no other option than try to stay positive, try to work,” Zibanejad said. “And just think about it: Tomorrow is a new day, a new opportunity to get two points, a new opportunity to get a win and that’s what we have to do.”

Chicago Blackhawks (NHL)

On Sunday, the Rangers will face the Chicago Blackhawks, who are looking to start a winning streak after a rough patch. The Blackhawks had a strong stretch of three wins in a row from Dec. 15-19, but then lost five games straight.

They bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, thanks to two goals from Nick Foligno.

Foligno sees the win over Montreal as a good start to a winning streak.

“Huge, huge,” Foligno said of the victory over Montreal. “Just for our fans. We left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, ourselves mostly, in how we played in that Winter Classic (a 6-2 loss to St. Louis on Tuesday). We want to make sure we’re proud of the brand of hockey we’re putting out there, and that’s more the Blackhawk brand they’re expecting to see.

“We’ll fine-tune it and get a little bit better, but the momentum will hopefully carry over. Yeah, it was big to get one at home ice here. We have a nice little homestand, so let’s take advantage of it.”

Chicago center Connor Bedard, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, is on a six-game point streak after getting an assist against the Canadiens. The 19-year-old now has 95 points (32 goals, 63 assists) in 107 career games, making him the second-highest scoring teenager in franchise history.

Sunday’s game is the second time this season the Rangers will face the Blackhawks. Chicago won the first meeting 2-1 on Dec. 9. However, the Rangers have won seven of their last nine games against Chicago.

Nick Foligno Scores Twice in Blackhawks’ Victory in Chicago

It seemed like the Montreal Canadiens came into the game with a plan to overpower the Blackhawks. They came out hitting hard, targeting anyone on the ice, with or without the puck.

Less than two minutes into the game, Frank Nazar drew two penalties from the Canadiens, both of which were called. The Blackhawks made the most of a 5-on-3 power play, taking an early lead. However, Cole Caufield managed to tie the game late in the first period when he was left unguarded.

In the second period, Colton Dach made an impact right away, delivering a couple of big hits on his first shift. This helped the Blackhawks take control of the game. Seven minutes in, Wyatt Kaiser took a shot at the net that Nick Foligno tipped in to regain the lead for the Blackhawks.

The game slowed down after that, with less hitting, but Montreal still managed to take more shots. The physical play picked up again in the final minutes of the period, but the Blackhawks entered the break with a 2-1 lead.

The Blackhawks began the third period with a penalty kill. They successfully killed the penalty, and shortly after it ended, they scored again. Craig Smith passed to Ryan Donato, who then fed the puck to Pat Maroon to score.

This goal was critical for the Blackhawks, who had struggled in front of their net. The Canadiens responded with a power play goal to make it 3-2, but the Blackhawks added an insurance goal late in the third to seal the win.

Star 1: Arvid Söderblom
This game could have gotten out of hand in the second period, but Söderblom kept the Blackhawks in it. He faced 30 shots in the first two periods, saving 29 of them, including a remarkable stop in the closing seconds of the second period.

The Blackhawks were outshot 19-8 in the second, but Söderblom’s play kept them ahead.

Star 2: Colton Dach
Dach played a physical game early on, throwing hits and drawing a penalty from Montreal. During that power play, he was a constant presence in front of the net and had a couple of good scoring chances.

In his debut, he delivered a strong performance, leading the team with four shots on goal and two hits in the first period. By the end of the second, he had five shots and five hits, both team highs.

Star 3: Nick Foligno
After the tough loss in the Winter Classic, many in Chicago expected more from the team. The Blackhawks’ captain, Nick Foligno, stepped up in this game. He scored a go-ahead goal in the second period and sealed the win with another goal late in the third. This is the leadership the team needed, and Foligno delivered.

Chicago Blackhawks Snap Five-Game Losing Streak with Win Over Canadiens in Chicago

Nick Foligno scored two goals, and Arvid Soderblom made 38 saves to help the Chicago Blackhawks

stop a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at United Center on Friday.

Tyler Bertuzzi and Patrick Maroon also scored for the Blackhawks (13-24-2), who played their first game since losing 6-2 to the St. Louis Blues in the Discover NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Tuesday. Connor Bedard had an assist, which extended his point streak to six games (three goals, five assists), setting a career high.

“Huge, huge,” said Foligno, the Chicago captain. “Just for our fans. We left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, ourselves mostly, in how we played in that Winter Classic. We want to make sure we’re proud of the brand of hockey we’re putting out there, and that’s more the Blackhawk brand they’re expecting to see.

We’ll fine-tune it and get a little bit better, but the momentum will hopefully carry over. Yeah, it was big to get one at home ice here. We have a nice little homestand, so let’s take advantage of it.”

Cole Caufield and Emil Heineman scored for Montreal, and Sam Montembeault made 22 saves for the Canadiens (17-18-3), who had won three straight games. Mike Matheson had two assists.

“I feel like we generated a lot, a lot of chances offensively, but he (Soderblom) stood on his head, so you have to give credit where credit’s due,” said Matheson.

Chicago Blackhawks (NHL)

Bertuzzi gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 3:21 of the first period during a 5-on-3 power play. He took a pass from Teuvo Teravainen and tapped it in. Chicago went on the power play at 1:58 after Arber Xhekaj was called for tripping, and Jayden Struble was penalized for slashing.

“It was hard to give up a two-minute 5-on-3 because I felt like we were all over them to start the game,” said Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis. “Then they go on a 5-on-3. They get a goal. But I still felt like after that we were coming.

We scored a big goal at the end of the first. In the second, it would have been nice to separate because I felt like we dominated most of that second period. Just couldn’t get the goal.”

Caufield tied it 1-1 at 18:24 with his 20th goal of the season. He took a pass from Matheson at the goal line, skated out in front, and put a wrist shot past Soderblom’s stick.

Foligno put Chicago ahead 2-1 at 7:05 of the second period when he tipped in Wyatt Kaiser’s point shot.

Soderblom made 19 saves in the second period, including one on Michael Pezzetta from close range at 10:21 and a glove save on Josh Anderson’s wrist shot from the left face-off circle at 10:37. With 11 seconds left in the period, Soderblom used his right pad to stop Nick Suzuki on a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle.

“I like that,” Soderblom said of the heavy workload. “When you get a lot of shots, it’s easy to stay focused and you’re feeling the puck a lot. I don’t mind that. It’s a good feeling for sure.”

Maroon extended the lead to 3-1 at 3:01 of the third period. He took a backhand pass from Ryan Donato and tapped the puck in from the edge of the crease.

Chicago Blackhawks (NHL)

Heineman’s power-play goal at 9:45 brought the Canadiens to within 3-2. He scored at the right side of the net, batting in a rebound after Matheson’s shot bounced high off the end boards.

“That was definitely not what I had planned to do by shooting it 10 feet over the net, but he made a great play,” Matheson said.

Foligno restored the two-goal lead for Chicago, making it 4-2 at 15:51 when he jammed in the rebound of Taylor Hall’s shot from the slot.

The game marked the NHL debut of Blackhawks forward Colton Dach. He played against his brother, Kirby Dach, a forward who played for Chicago from 2019-22.

“It was awesome,” said Colton, who had five shots on goal in 11:05 of ice time. “Definitely a little nervous before I went on the ice for warmups, but it was all excitement. Emotions were flying. After that, I just started to play hockey.

“I was just trying to take it all in. All the guys here said, ‘Take your moment (with the pregame rookie lap) and go out there and have fun.’ That’s why I was trying to do.”

Kirby appreciated the special moment despite the loss.

“It’d be better if we had won,” he said. “It was cool. I thought Colton was great. It’s still pretty special. I’m happy that I was kind of around for it.”

The St. Louis Blues’ playoff hopes received a lift with a crucial win over divisional rival Chicago

After a successful performance in one of the NHL’s major events, the St. Louis Blues are hoping that their 6-2 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Discover NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field on Tuesday will help them build momentum for a strong second half of the season.

The Blues (18-17-4) are undefeated in Winter Classic games, having beaten the Blackhawks 4-1 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis in 2017 and the Minnesota Wild 6-4 at Target Field in Minneapolis in 2022. With a season marked by inconsistency, the Blues are happy to take any boost they can get from their third win in the last four games, especially after playing outdoors.

“Yeah, even the game (Sunday) against Buffalo (a 4-2 loss where the Blues outshot Buffalo 37-16), the last four games we’ve been playing well,” said forward Jake Neighbours, who had an assist on Tuesday.

“It feels like we’re building something. The offense is starting to score a little bit more. That stuff’s nice. You want to just take that feeling and ride with it and try to get on a little bit of a roll here.”

On Tuesday, St. Louis got off to a strong start, with Cam Fowler scoring a power-play goal at 1:40 in the first period and Jordan Kyrou adding another at 8:10 for a 2-0 lead. The Blues led 5-1 late in the second period.

The Blues, who are 9-5-3 in 17 games since Jim Montgomery replaced Drew Bannister as coach on Nov. 24, have a 3-1-1 record in their last five games, but they know they need to build on this success.

Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues in the game

They trail the Calgary Flames by three points for the second wild-card spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference but have played two more games.

“We have to focus on winning hockey games,” said captain Brayden Schenn. “Because at the end of the day, when you look at the standings, these two points matter. The experience is one thing. You’ve got to play the hockey game, play the right way, and hopefully come out on top.”

The St. Louis players spent the rest of New Year’s Eve with their families in Chicago before returning to their regular routine, likely starting with practice Thursday, followed by back-to-back games on Friday at home against the Ottawa Senators and Saturday at the Columbus Blue Jackets. Montgomery hopes that this game on a big stage can help his team become more consistent.

“I hope playing the right way for 60 minutes and scoring goals, because we’re playing the right way, will lead us to be a little more consistent,” Montgomery said. “I’m glad we’re not playing for a couple of days because this is an emotional high.

I know it’s just two points like all the other two points, but this is not the same kind of game emotionally. So I’m glad we’re not playing tomorrow or even in two days, but for our group right now, we’ve got to start pushing.

“We have a lot of games at home here in January and February if we want to make a run at the playoffs. Our consistency and belief in our identity has to start showing game in, game out.”

Cam Fowler excels in his 1,000th game, leading the Blues to victory over the Blackhawks

Cam Fowler scored two goals in his 1,000th career game as the St. Louis Blues defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 on Tuesday in the NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Justin Faulk contributed a goal and two assists to help the Blues, who are now 3-0 in Winter Classic games.

Dylan Holloway and Alexandre Texier both added a goal and an assist to support the Blues, who won for the third time in their last four games, while sending the Blackhawks to their fifth consecutive loss. Jordan Binnington made 28 saves for St. Louis.

Fowler started the scoring with the first of three power-play goals in the first period, skating through the slot and beating Blackhawks goaltender Petr Mrazek with a wrist shot.

Jordan Kyrou made it 2-0 at 8:10 of the first with a simple backdoor tap-in after a sharp passing play. The Blues entered the game struggling on the power play, with only one goal in their last 21 opportunities.

The Blackhawks took advantage of their first power-play chance later in the period. After St. Louis’s Nathan Walker missed an attempt to clear the puck, Ryan Donato’s shot hit Binnington’s pads and went to Taylor Hall, who scored on a rebound from the right circle.

Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues in the game

Faulk extended the Blues’ lead to 3-1 with a shot from the point at 7:15 of the second period.

Binnington stopped Hall on a breakaway and denied Connor Bedard’s follow-up moments later, keeping St. Louis ahead by two goals.

The Blues made it 4-1 at 13:34 of the second period when Holloway scored on a rebound of Faulk’s shot off the post. Fowler added his second goal just over four minutes later, sending a wrist shot through traffic to make it 5-1. Fowler became only the second defenseman in NHL history to score twice in his 1,000th game.

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno rallied the crowd shortly after, fighting Blues captain Brayden Schenn following the next faceoff.

Tyler Bertuzzi scored for Chicago on the power play at 11:15 of the third period. Texier then capped the scoring at 16:18.

Mrazek made 22 saves for the Blackhawks, who have lost their last three games by four goals. Chicago dropped to 0-5 in the Winter Classic and 1-6 in outdoor games.

Blackhawks Struggle in 5-1 Loss to Stars, Extend Losing Streak to Four Games

On Sunday, December 29th, the Chicago Blackhawks suffered a tough 5-1 defeat to the Dallas Stars, marking their fourth consecutive loss. Despite a brief moment of brilliance from rookie Connor Bedard, who scored in the first period, the Blackhawks couldn’t overcome the dominance of the Stars. Jason Robertson’s go-ahead goal and stellar goaltending from Jake Oettinger were key factors in Dallas’ commanding win. Along with Robertson’s goal, the Stars received scoring from Jamie Benn, Evgenii Dadonov, Wyatt Johnston, and Matt Duchene, all of whom contributed to the 5-1 scoreline.

The Blackhawks took an early lead when Bedard netted his 10th goal of the season on a power play in the first period. Seth Jones assisted on the play, and Bedard’s shot deflected off Sam Steel’s stick past Oettinger. However, Dallas responded before the end of the period, with Benn jamming in a rebound off Dadonov’s backhander, evening the score at 1-1. The momentum shifted further in Dallas’ favor in the second period when Robertson capitalized on a power play, giving the Stars a 2-1 lead. Dadonov then extended the lead to 3-1 after a feed from Matt Duchene.

The third period saw the Stars add two more goals, effectively sealing the game. Just 10 seconds into the period, Johnston scored off a deflection from a Duchene shot, making it 4-1. Duchene himself added the final goal of the night, putting home a rebound off Johnston’s shot at 17:05. Throughout the game, Oettinger’s performance in goal was crucial, as he helped keep the Blackhawks from generating any real offense after their early lead.

Dallas Stars players such as Robertson and Dadonov acknowledged the importance of getting pucks to the net, especially in tight areas, where the majority of goals are scored. Robertson highlighted how the team’s emphasis on playing inside helped them generate more scoring opportunities. Dadonov also reflected on his individual performance, expressing confidence in his ability to contribute as the season progresses. He is looking forward to building momentum in the new year, particularly as the team deals with injuries and strives to maintain strong performances.

On the other hand, Teuvo Teravainen of the Blackhawks reflected on the team’s struggles and the loss of momentum throughout the game. He noted that the team needs to find a way to bounce back quickly after mistakes, stressing the importance of being better in the next shift. He also acknowledged that the team hasn’t been supporting their goalies as much as they should, which has been a problem in recent games. The major penalty taken by Tyler Bertuzzi, which led to Robertson’s go-ahead goal, shifted the game’s momentum, and Teravainen emphasized the need for the team to regroup and improve their overall performance.

Blues dominate in a strong win over the Blackhawks at the Winter Classic

St. Louis coach Jim Montgomery walked around before Tuesday night’s Winter Classic, taking in the growing crowd and festive atmosphere. He thought about all the famous ballplayers who played at Wrigley Field.

“And here we are getting to play an NHL hockey game,” Montgomery said. “It’s just really cool.”

The Winter Classic returned to Wrigley on the final day of 2024, and the Chicago Blackhawks threw quite a party. Fireworks lit up the night sky at the home of the Chicago Cubs. The Smashing Pumpkins and Chance the Rapper performed, and actors Bill Murray and Jon Hamm received a big cheer when they appeared on the videoboard during the third period.

It was a very Chicago celebration, but St. Louis had all the fun. The Blues cruised to a 6-2 win over the Blackhawks in front of 40,933 fans, improving to 3-0 in the Winter Classic.

“This was an amazing experience for the fans and just for us, too,” said St. Louis captain Brayden Schenn. “Having family and friends here to experience something like that at Wrigley Field, an amazing thing, and then winning on top of it.”

Just a few weeks after being traded to St. Louis from Anaheim, Cam Fowler celebrated his 1,000th NHL game with two goals. The 33-year-old defenseman became the first player in NHL history to play outdoors for his 1,000th game.

Teams warm up before the game

The night, with everything coming together, was “pretty surreal,” Fowler said.

“Going through a lot of emotions the last few weeks getting adjusted to a new team,” he added. “But couldn’t have asked for anything more for this experience, getting to share it with my family. … It was an awesome night for all of us.”

For the Blackhawks, it was a different story. The team, which had lost five games in a row, was looking for answers.

Backed by the majority of a loud crowd, the Blackhawks started slowly, and the Blues took control with three goals in the second period. As the game ended, chants of “Let’s go Blues!” filled the air.

“You know, those tickets aren’t cheap for them to come and support us,” said Chicago forward Connor Bedard. “We, obviously, in our room are disappointed with ourselves. But I feel bad for our fan base coming out to this and we kind of lay an egg.”

The day started with Bedard and the Blackhawks — carrying their sticks and skates and wearing custom “Team Chicago” gear — riding one of the city’s famous elevated trains to Wrigley.

The team’s pregame clothes were designed to celebrate the connection between the franchise and the city. The outfits featured patches honoring Chicago’s first responders, and each player chose a charitable or community-based organization for their hat.

“It’s a neat thing to bring our community together, right?” said captain Nick Foligno. “And one of the big things we talked about was our first responders, too, and what they mean to our community and what they do for us. We wanted to highlight that and also highlight what means a lot to us.”

Connor Bedard reacts in the 2nd period

St. Louis wore gray sweatshirts and hats for their bus ride to the stadium. The hats had “99” on the front, and the shirts featured a round logo with “99” and “GRETZKY’S BASEMENT,” a nod to the hockey school connected to Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky.

“We just thought it would be a great opportunity to honor Wayne and everything he’s done for the game,” said Blues defenseman Justin Faulk. “He’s obviously an integral part in St. Louis, too.

He’s done a lot for the community there and still does, and he’s great to everyone in the organization and the guys, and we thought there’s no better way to show our appreciation than to do this today for him.”

The Blues had the visitor’s clubhouse at Wrigley, so they had to deal with a long stairway to get to and from the ice. As they often do when playing outdoors, they made the best of it.

“Just had to take your time,” said goaltender Jordan Binnington, smiling. “It kind of helped me focus for the game. Just one step at a time. We talk about that a lot and I was really taking it one step at a time because I did not want to go down.”

Bedard shines as the Blackhawks take on the Blues in the Winter Classic

Connor Bedard practiced with the Chicago Blackhawks right on the field at Wrigley, skating alongside his parents and sister.

For the 19-year-old center, the experience was unforgettable.

“It’s one of the coolest experiences of my life so far,” Bedard said. “And obviously, the game hasn’t even started yet. So I’m looking forward to it.”

The Blackhawks will face the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday in the 16th Winter Classic. This marks Wrigley’s second time hosting, after also hosting the event in 2009, and it will be the first rematch in the event’s history.

This game will be Bedard’s first major showcase since being selected by Chicago as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft. He had been named an All-Star but missed the game due to a broken jaw.

Bedard is the most well-known player in what is otherwise a quieter Winter Classic. While he’s used to being the focus, especially after a high-profile first NHL season, he knows this game is different.

“Playing outside, playing at Wrigley here, and getting that different experience — that’s what excites me,” he said. “It’s not really about people tuning in, but that’s obviously great for us. To have more people in the crowd, it’s going to be an exciting atmosphere.”

A puck rests on the ice before the game

This Winter Classic is also unique because it’s the NHL’s first outdoor game featuring two teams that made a coaching change during the season.

Since Jim Montgomery replaced Drew Bannister on Nov. 24, St. Louis has a record of 8-5-3. Montgomery, who had been out of work for five days after being fired by the Boston Bruins, has brought fresh energy to the team.

“He brings a great energy around the locker room,” said goalie Jordan Binnington, who has a Winter Classic mask featuring sketches of St. Louis Cardinals legends Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, and Adam Wainwright.

Montgomery is familiar with outdoor games, having coached the Bruins to a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh in the 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park.

He also has players experienced in outdoor games, like Jordan Kyrou, who scored two goals and two assists in a 6-4 win at Minnesota’s Target Field during the 2022 Winter Classic. St. Louis forward Brandon Saad, now playing in his sixth outdoor game, also has experience, including three with Chicago.

Kyrou’s first outdoor game was in cold weather, and while temperatures for Tuesday’s game are expected to be in the high 30s, rain may be an issue.

“It’s a pretty awesome stadium,” Kyrou said after the Blues’ practice at Wrigley. “I’m sure it’s going to be super packed tomorrow, and it’ll be a crazy atmosphere. So we’re all looking forward to it.”

The Blackhawks will play outdoors for an NHL-record seventh time, though their last outdoor game was in 2019. Chicago is going through a tough stretch after a period of success, including three Stanley Cup titles.

Chicago Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson, center top, talks to his players during the third period of an NHL hockey game

Currently, the team is 4-7-0 under interim coach Anders Sorensen, who replaced Luke Richardson after Richardson was fired on Dec. 5. Heading into the Winter Classic, the Blackhawks are on a four-game losing streak.

“I think the biggest thing we talked about today was just, hey, the outcome of the last couple of games is not what we want, but let’s try to enjoy where we are right now, and then take it for the experience and enjoy it,” Sorensen said. “And then put our best foot forward tomorrow.”

Despite the Blackhawks’ struggles, Bedard has been playing well since the coaching change. After a 12-game scoring drought, he has recorded seven goals and 10 assists in his last 16 games.

“I don’t know if I’ve been on a run,” Bedard said. “I’m playing obviously decent and you have a little stretch. This is more what I am as a player. It’s about how much I’m creating and how many plays I’m making, and I feel like I’ve been doing that pretty well.”

Alex Tuch’s hat trick leads Sabres to victory over Blackhawks

Alex Tuch’s third career hat trick helped the Buffalo Sabres secure a 6-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.

Jack Quinn and Dylan Cozens each contributed a goal and an assist, Rasmus Dahlin added two assists, and Zach Benson scored for Buffalo. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 15 saves on 17 shots to earn his 10th win in 25 starts this season.

After a tough 13-game winless streak (0-10-3), the Sabres have bounced back, outscoring opponents 13-3 in their last two wins.

Tyler Bertuzzi and Seth Jones scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost three straight. Chicago is 1-10-1 in its last 12 road games.

Blackhawks goalie Petr Mrazek gave up four goals on 11 shots and was replaced by Arvid Soderblom, who saved 22 of 24 shots in the final two periods.

Buffalo scored four goals in the first period, starting with Benson’s tip-in goal at 9:51. Tuch added another tip-in at 12:23, and Quinn scored just 15 seconds later.

This was Buffalo’s second-fastest pair of goals this season, with Tage Thompson and JJ Peterka scoring 11 seconds apart in a 5-4 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 3.

Chicago Blackhawks center Frank Nazar participates in the team’s NHL hockey camp

A turnover by Connor Bedard led to another Sabres goal 42 seconds before the first intermission. Quinn grabbed the puck and passed it to Cozens, who finished it off to make it 4-0.

Bertuzzi scored the Blackhawks’ first goal in the second period. Jones added another for Chicago at 3:06 of the third, with an assist from Pat Maroon’s fake shot.

Just as the Blackhawks started gaining momentum, Tuch scored again at 5:48 of the third, beating Soderblom with a low-angle shot.

Tuch completed his hat trick at 15:06 of the final frame. He stole the puck from Alex Vlasic at the Sabres’ blue line, raced into the Chicago zone, and scored on a breakaway.

Sabres head into showdown with Blackhawks on a rare wave of momentum

After ending a 13-game winless streak, the Buffalo Sabres will look to begin winning again when they play the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.

Buffalo’s tough 0-10-3 stretch came to an end in a big way with a 7-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Monday. All the frustration the Sabres had built up over the past month seemed to be released during that game, giving the team a boost heading into the Christmas break.

“Great morale in the room right now heading into … a much-needed break for us,” forward Tage Thompson said. “Mentally, physically (we will) just now regroup … and reset for the second half of the season with a win under our belt and some good mojo.”

The 13-game losing streak had dropped the Sabres near the bottom of the league standings. With 28 points, they are just ahead of the Blackhawks, who have 26 points.

Chicago is on a two-game losing streak, including a 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Monday. The Blackhawks lost their lead in both the first and second periods and fell behind in the third due to another late breakdown.

The Blackhawks have been outscored 49-32 in third periods, and they are tied for the most goals allowed in third periods this season.

“I thought it was (a) little bit the same story,” Chicago interim coach Anders Sorensen said. “The biggest thing I think is when the game is on the line. … (We’ve) got to be willing to go and play offensively at the same time. I thought we got sat back a little bit too much there.”

While the Blackhawks have struggled in many areas, one strength is their ability to kill penalties. Chicago’s penalty kill percentage of 85.3 is the fourth-best in the NHL, and in their last 13 games, opponents are just 1-for-37 on power plays.

On the other hand, the Sabres have scored on just 14.7 percent of their power plays, which is the fourth-lowest in the league. However, the power-play unit has shown some improvement, going 1-for-3 in each of the Sabres’ last two games.

Thompson leads Buffalo with 26 points (17 goals, 9 assists). Forward JJ Peterka has seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) in a five-game points streak.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen had a rough 0-7-2 record with an .864 save percentage in nine games before making 27 saves on 28 shots against the Islanders. He is expected to start again for Buffalo on Friday after his strong performance.

Chicago’s Petr Mrazek missed two weeks with a groin injury before returning to play against the Calgary Flames on Dec. 21. Arvid Soderblom started against the Wild on Monday as the team is easing Mrazek back into action, but Mrazek is more likely to start after the three-day Christmas break.

Connor Bedard leads the Blackhawks with 30 points (9 goals, 21 assists). After a slow start to his second NHL season, Bedard has been playing better, scoring four goals and seven assists in his last nine games.

Buffalo has a 6-0-1 record against Chicago since the start of the 2021-22 season. This seven-game points streak includes a 4-2 win in Chicago on Oct. 19 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.

Connor Bedard’s Game-Winning Goal Leads Blackhawks to 5-3 Victory Over Islanders in Thriller

The Chicago Blackhawks secured a thrilling 5-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday, led by Connor Bedard’s clutch goal in the final minute and Arvid Soderblom’s impressive 30 saves. The win came as a much-needed boost for Chicago, which had struggled recently, losing seven of their previous eight games, including a 4-1 defeat to New Jersey the night before. Teuvo Teravainen contributed significantly with a goal and two assists, while Taylor Hall, Ilya Mikheyev, and Connor Murphy also found the back of the net.

Bedard’s decisive goal, his seventh of the season, broke a 3-3 tie late in the third period. His low-slot shot slipped just past Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin, who made 18 saves but couldn’t recover in time to stop the puck. This moment marked a standout performance for Bedard, highlighting his value as a key playmaker for Chicago. Murphy sealed the victory with an empty-netter, his first goal of the season, as the Blackhawks successfully closed out the game.

The Islanders, despite battling injuries, showed resilience throughout the match. Simon Holmstrom, Ryan Pulock, and Noah Dobson scored for New York, with Dobson tying the game early in the third period. However, the team missed the presence of Bo Horvat, sidelined due to a lower-body injury. New York, now on a three-game road trip, struggled on special teams, going 0 for 4 on the power play against a Chicago penalty kill that has been flawless over its last nine games.

Chicago’s performance reflected marked improvements in critical areas. The team capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play with Teravainen’s goal, and defenseman Alex Vlasic added two assists in a solid showing. The Blackhawks demonstrated their ability to overcome adversity and execute late in the game, a skill they had lacked in recent outings. The win also snapped New York’s recent dominance, as the Islanders had defeated Chicago 5-4 just days earlier.

Looking ahead, both teams have little time to rest. The Islanders continue their road trip against the Carolina Hurricanes, while the Blackhawks remain at home to face the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. For Chicago, Sunday’s victory may serve as a pivotal turning point as they seek consistency and momentum in their upcoming games.
