David Tepper’s Panthers Fire GM Scott Fitterer After NFL’s Worst Record in 2023-24

The Carolina Panthers are now looking for a new general manager along with a head coach.

Team owner David Tepper announced Monday he fired GM Scott Fitterer.

“As we move forward with the new direction for our franchise, I have made the decision that Scott Fitterer will no longer serve as our general manager,” he said. “I appreciate Scott’s efforts and wish the best for him and his family.”

The move comes a day after a 9-0 loss that relegated Carolina to a league-worst 2-15 record.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday that Fitterer was expected to be let go. Few Panthers fans will look back fondly on his tenure, which began in 2021.

Carolina has little to show from his work in the draft so far.

Cornerback Jaycee Horn, the No. 8 overall pick in 2021, has appeared in just 22 games through three years. Wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., a second-round pick that year, has caught 64 passes for 767 yards and a touchdown in 36 games.

In 2022, Fitterer traded up to take quarterback Matt Corral, who’s no longer with the team. Using a top-10 pick on offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu didn’t stop the team from allowing the second-most sacks (65) this year.

Then there’s the Bryce Young pick. On its own, taking Young might be viewed as a mistake in retrospect, and it will be compounded by the fact the Panthers lost what proved to be the No. 1 overall pick for 2024 in the process.

ESPN’s David Newton also wrote, “Fitterer will be remembered as much for the trade he didn’t make as for the big trade he made.”

The Christian McCaffrey trade has aged slightly poorly but isn’t working out terribly for the Panthers. Declining an offer of two first-round picks for pass-rusher Brian Burns, on the other hand, remains an almost unforgivable error.

Overall, it’s fair to question how much of the blame for Carolina’s personnel missteps lays at the door of Fitterer, though.

Tepper has already earned a reputation for being a meddlesome owner whose impatience is hurting the franchise.

The owner was ultimately the one who signed off on not only hiring Matt Rhule but also handing him a seven-year, $62 million contract. In addition, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported in November some around the NFL believe “the Panthers drafted Bryce Young because Tepper wanted him.”

Tepper pushed back on that idea in his press conference after firing head coach Frank Reich:

Panthers owner David Tepper was asked if it was true that Frank Reich wanted C.J. Stroud over Bryce Young.

“In the case of Bryce, it was almost- I believe it was a unanimous decision by the coaches and the scouts.”

Two things can be true. Fitterer left the Panthers in a worse state than he found them, but he was dealt a difficult hand from the start, thanks to the ownership situation.

Between getting to hire both a head coach and a lead decision-maker on football matters, Tepper will, for better or worse, get to reshape the Panthers how he sees fit.

Carolina Panthers’ Owner David Tepper Hit with $300K Fine for Tossing Drink at Jaguars Fans

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper incurred a $300,000 fine from the NFL on Tuesday for what the league deemed as “unacceptable conduct” during the team’s 26-0 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Video footage captured Tepper throwing a drink toward Jaguars fans from his open-air suite at Jacksonville’s EverBank Stadium.

In response to the fine, the NFL emphasized its expectation for all personnel to uphold conduct that respects fans and positively reflects on their team and the league. Tepper, acknowledging his passion for the team, expressed regret for his actions and admitted that he should have allowed NFL stadium security to address any issues that arose. He affirmed his respect for the NFL’s code of conduct and accepted the league’s disciplinary measures.

As the second-richest owner in the league, boasting a net worth of $20.6 billion, the $300,000 fine constitutes less than 1% of 1% of Tepper’s wealth. This penalty draws parallels to the $250,000 fine imposed on former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams in 2009 for making an obscene gesture at Buffalo fans during a victory celebration.

The incident, captured by a Jaguars fan and posted on social media, occurred approximately three minutes before the end of the game following an interception by quarterback Bryce Young. The loss marked the end of Carolina’s 342-game streak (dating back to 2002) without being shut out and secured the Panthers (2-14) the NFL’s worst record, granting the Chicago Bears the top pick in the 2024 draft through a previous trade.

Carolina’s struggles since the draft, where they traded two first-round picks and top receiver DJ Moore to move up and select Young, have been evident. Young, once touted by Tepper to lead the Panthers to “Super Bowls,” has statistically performed poorly as one of the NFL’s worst quarterbacks. The team, under Tepper’s ownership since 2018, has faced six consecutive losing seasons, with a record of 31-67. Tepper has made mid-season coaching changes three times since 2019, firing head coaches like Frank Reich and Matt Rhule due to poor starts in the respective seasons.

Carolina Panthers Navigate Sweeping Changes: A New Offensive Vision and Coaching Dynamics Unfold

Carolina underwent significant transformations last week, with more changes on the horizon, particularly concerning the selection of a new head coach by Panthers owner David Tepper. The prevailing expectation in the NFL is that Tepper is inclined towards appointing an offensive-minded head coach, someone capable of unlocking the full potential of quarterback Bryce Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

According to sources familiar with the Panthers’ strategy, Tepper is leaning towards an offensive approach. Possible candidates for the coaching position include Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, who withdrew from consideration for the Panthers’ head coaching job just over a year ago, and Brian Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. Other potential candidates are likely to emerge, with several teams in the offseason expected to explore options similar to Johnson and Johnson.

Carolina’s imperative is to secure a head coach who can mentor and shape Young’s development, mirroring the Miami Dolphins’ hiring of Mike McDaniel to influence Tua Tagovailoa, a former Alabama quarterback who faced challenges in his rookie season. McDaniel played a pivotal role in transforming Tagovailoa into a successful NFL starting quarterback and an MVP candidate. Before McDaniel’s hiring, there were speculations about Miami considering alternatives like Tom Brady or pursuing a trade for Deshaun Watson.

The future guidance for Tepper also remains uncertain. Despite Carolina not providing assurances of retaining general manager Scott Fitterer, there are indications that the team would prefer to keep him. Nevertheless, league sources suggest that Fitterer’s future remains undecided.

In the interim, Chris Tabor assumes the role of head coach for the remainder of the season. Tabor’s emphasis on playing fast, staying loose, and relaxing has been communicated to the team as they prepare for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. The Panthers aspire for this message to yield positive results not only on Sunday but for the remainder of the season, contributing to a cultural overhaul.

In tandem with these efforts, changes in play callers are also underway. Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, who briefly called plays before having that responsibility rescinded by former head coach Frank Reich prior to his dismissal, regains his role. Senior assistant Jim Caldwell will serve as a special adviser to Brown, and Panthers quarterbacks coach Parks Frazier will transition from the booth to the field to have more direct interaction with Young. Frazier assumes this role following the dismissal of Josh McCown, Reich, and assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley on Monday.
