Blues focus on closing strong ahead of their game against the Panthers in St. Louis

After failing to finish off one of the highest-scoring teams in the NHL, the struggling St. Louis Blues must now face another high-powered offense just two nights later.

The Blues will play the Florida Panthers on Thursday following their 3-2 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers at home on Tuesday.

“We’ve got to be able to close out games,” said Blues coach Jim Montgomery, whose team has a 1-4-1 record in its last six games.

At home, St. Louis had a 2-1 lead with just under three minutes remaining against the Oilers, but allowed a goal with Edmonton’s goalie off for an extra attacker.

Edmonton, averaging 3.28 goals per game, tied the game with Leon Draisaitl’s goal with 2:14 left in regulation and won in overtime with Connor McDavid assisting Connor Brown for the winner.

“We were more direct and harder to play against in the third,” said Blues captain Brayden Schenn. “At the end of the day, we had chances to make it 3-1 and didn’t capitalize, unfortunately, and gave some good players time and space.”

Now, the Blues face the Panthers, who score 3.27 goals per game. Forwards Matthew Tkachuk (four goals, three assists in four games) and Aleksander Barkov (two goals, seven assists in six games) have been leading the team.

Barkov provides strong play on both sides of the puck.

“A real powerful man, strong man,” said Panthers coach Paul Maurice. “Never goes down. Never quits on the play. He’s such an honest player. He’s hard to handle one-on-one.”

The Blues will be helped defensively by the return of Nick Leddy, who played on Tuesday after missing 49 games due to an injury.

With Leddy back, the Blues have one of the most experienced defensive groups in the NHL. St. Louis added Ryan Suter in the offseason and traded for Cam Fowler during the season to join veterans Colton Parayko and Justin Faulk.

“As a coach, it’s very comforting because all of them have played so much, and because they are good and have handled so many situations,” Montgomery said. “All of them have been top-pairing defensemen. All of them have been in situations where they’ve had to be shutdown pairings, and most of them have also been relied upon to run a No. 1 power play, four of them.”

The Panthers had a three-game winning streak broken by a 6-3 loss to the Washington Capitals. The game was tied 2-2 going into the third period, but the Panthers got caught pushing too hard offensively.

“I think we were pushing a little too hard for a goal and gave up too many odd-man rushes and good scoring chances, and they capitalized,” said Panthers forward Sam Bennett.

“We don’t turn over pucks in the offensive zone, and we did, and it’s in our net,” Maurice said. “The margin for error for two good teams is pretty tight.”

Florida beat St. Louis 2-1 in overtime on Dec. 20 at home. Barkov had an assist in regulation and scored the overtime winner. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves.

Oilers aim to gain momentum as they face Blackhawks in Edmonton

After securing three wins during a six-game homestand, the Edmonton Oilers picked up an important road win on Tuesday.

The Oilers will look to keep the momentum going when they visit the struggling Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night before the 4 Nations Face-Off break.

Edmonton moved into first place in the Pacific Division after their 3-2 overtime win over the St. Louis Blues, their fourth win in the last six games. Coach Kris Knoblauch believes staying mentally tough against the Blackhawks and in Friday’s game against Colorado is crucial for keeping their top spot.

“It’s important that we put in a good effort and win as many games as possible,” Knoblauch said.

The Oilers showed resilience in St. Louis after falling behind 2-1 in the third period. Leon Draisaitl tied the game with 2:14 left, and Connor Brown scored the overtime winner 2:33 into extra time.

“It was good that we stuck with it, and we’ve seen that a lot this year,” Knoblauch said.

Connor McDavid, who had a goal and two assists in the win, has points in seven of the last eight games. Draisaitl, the NHL’s top scorer with 37 goals, has points in four straight games and 12 of his last 13.

The Blackhawks, with just 37 points, are near the bottom of the NHL. They’ve had a tough stretch, losing nine of their last 11 games (2-6-3), including a 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday.

The Blackhawks had a strong start in that game with Landon Slaggert scoring just seven seconds into the game, but Florida quickly tied it and took control to win.

The team is focused on developing a young core for the future, even though some recent losses have been tough to learn from.

“When (bad shifts) happen over and over, I think guys tend to just fold in,” said defenseman Connor Murphy, who returned after missing January with a groin injury. He felt his condition was “good.”

Chicago’s defensemen, including Murphy and Alec Martinez, are working on improving puck movement and breakouts as younger forwards adjust to the team’s system.

“Knowing where guys are going to be and knowing somebody’s going to be there so you can put it to a spot or an area,” Martinez said about getting the forwards comfortable.

Wednesday’s game will decide the season series between the Oilers and Blackhawks. Chicago won the first matchup 5-2 on Oct. 12, while Edmonton responded with a 4-3 victory on Jan. 11.

Teuvo Teravainen has three goals and three assists for Chicago against Edmonton this season, while Corey Perry has scored in both games for the Oilers.

Blues aim to end home slump against Oilers in St. Louis

After ending their six-game homestand on a tough note, the Edmonton Oilers will look to bounce back on the road when they face the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.

Edmonton lost the first game of their homestand, but then won three straight. However, they struggled in their last two games, losing 3-2 to Detroit in a shootout and falling 4-3 to Toronto on Saturday.

The Maple Leafs were up 3-0 midway through the second period, and Edmonton couldn’t complete their comeback despite scoring twice in the third to pull within a goal. The Oilers outshot Toronto 48-28, but still came up short.

“It was just one of those nights,” said Edmonton forward Corey Perry. “We might have been overzealous to get playing and it shuts our brains off. Those are just little things. You change those in the course of the game, and it can come back and haunt you.

“A couple turnovers led to penalties against and then their power play went to work. If we eliminate those turnovers, I think we would have had a better start. We played with the puck quite a bit tonight.”

The Oilers’ strong offense, averaging 3.29 goals per game, ranked sixth in the league heading into Monday.

“Once we started keeping it simple and getting on them, playing five-on-five, we were good, we were all over them,” said defenseman Evan Bouchard, who scored a goal in the loss, along with Perry and Zach Hyman.

The Blues are starting a stretch of six straight home games, with three of those before the 4 Nations Face-Off begins on February 12. They’ve struggled at home, with a record of 11-13-1 on their own ice.

Before beating the Utah Hockey Club 2-1 in Salt Lake City on Sunday, St. Louis had lost four straight by a combined score of 16-4.

Blues coach Jim Montgomery responded to the team’s struggles by putting winger Jordan Kyrou back with center Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich on the top forward line against Utah. The trio generated nine shots on goal, and Kyrou scored the game-winner.

“All the way from the start, all the way to the end, we played hard, we played aggressive, we played fast, we played with the puck,” said Kyrou. “We weren’t just throwing it away.”

Thomas is the Blues’ top playmaker, and Kyrou is the team’s primary shooter, so their chemistry was quickly restored.

“It’s kind of just old chemistry,” Kyrou said. “I kind of know when he’s looking, where he’s looking, so I just try to jump in those holes.”

The Oilers won the last matchup between these teams 4-2 on December 7 in Edmonton. Connor McDavid scored a goal and added an assist, while Leon Draisaitl had two assists for the Oilers.

Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner made 29 saves to get the win, while Jordan Binnington allowed four goals on 21 shots for St. Louis.

The Oilers’ defense should get a boost on Tuesday with Mattias Ekholm returning to the blue line after missing Saturday’s game due to illness.
