NFL to Investigate Falcons’ Handling of Injured Rookie Running Back

Despite not appearing on the Atlanta Falcons’ injury report, their rookie first-round pick, Bijan Robinson, saw limited action during the first half of Sunday’s 16-13 victory over the Buccaneers. Robinson played just six snaps and did not receive a single touch in the first two quarters. When asked about Robinson’s inactivity at halftime, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith mentioned that the running back was “just not feeling all that great.” Now, the NFL is raising questions about the situation.

According to CBS Sports NFL Lead Insider Jonathan Jones, the league is launching an investigation into why Robinson was not listed on Atlanta’s injury report. Jones highlights that teams are obligated to report all injuries, even those that emerge the night before a game. However, in this particular instance, there appeared to be no doubt that Robinson would play on Sunday. While he did take the field, his playing time was limited. ESPN reports that such violations have resulted in fines in the past.

After the game, Robinson revealed that he had been dealing with headaches and began to feel “weird” on Saturday night. He had difficulty sleeping and woke up on Sunday “feeling completely out of it.” He took medication in an attempt to feel better, but his headache persisted. His performance in the game was limited to just one carry for three yards.

Robinson, who entered the game as the Falcons’ leading rusher and one of their top receivers, did not receive any targets or rushing attempts during the first half of the game, which was tied 10-10 at halftime.

When asked why Robinson received only one carry despite his limited playing time, Coach Smith referred to the specific situation, saying, “He was in a two-minute situation, gave us three yards, and it was situational football. He changes how people want to call it, and that’s why. It’s pretty simple.”

During Robinson’s absence, Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patterson combined for 13 of Atlanta’s 15 first-half rushing attempts, while Drake London and Jonnu Smith led the team in receptions with three each in the first half.

Robinson’s inability to contribute significantly had a significant impact on the Falcons, who managed to secure a divisional road win despite his limited role. He is not only the most productive offensive player for the Falcons but also ranks among the top 10 running backs in both rushing and receiving in the NFL.

Coach Arthur Smith Says it’s His Fault the Falcons Couldn’t Get their Offense Going at the Beginning and Lost to the Jaguars

In the last three times they picked new players for their team, the Atlanta Falcons chose very good ones like tight end Kyle Pitts, receiver Drake London, as well as running back Bijan Robinson. They are super talented! With all this talent, you would expect the Falcons to have a very exciting offense. But this year, it has not been as amazing as we hoped.

Recently, in the last two games, the most relied player did not score a lot for Atlanta. The team lost one game, 20-6, to Detroit and another 23-7 to the Jaguars in London. Robinson, one of their star players, did very well on Sunday, gaining 137 yards when he had the ball. But the rest of the team did not play as well as we hoped.

Coach Arthur Smith said before the season that the Falcons’ offense would be an exciting one. Now, he knows it is his job to make that happen and make things better.

“We have to do a better job, and that starts with getting our offense going early,” Smith said on the team’s official website after Sunday’s loss. “You can’t turn the ball over even if you go back to the hole…” Your life will become even more difficult. ”

Desmond Ridder, who is in his second year as the quarterback, has not been playing as well as we expected him to play in the first four games. He normally throws the ball about 186 yards each game and does not try long passes often. In the last game, he tried to throw the ball far twice, but it did not work out.

Books about Ridder entering 2023 say that while he may not be an elite passer like Sunday’s opponent, Trevor Lawrence, he is a steady force who makes smart decisions and does not turn the ball over.

That was not the case in London. Ridder had two consecutive interceptions in the second quarter, including a pick-six to put the Falcons up 17-0. The QB then allowed a sack and fumble on his final possession, sealing the loss. “I handled the ball very well,” Ridder said.

It is a Tough Lesson for a Young Quarterback

It was the first game with multiple turnovers for Ridder, who had fewer than 250 passing yards in all eight of his career. Despite the inefficient offense, Smith never considered benching Ridder in place of veteran gunslinger Taylor Heinicke.

“It is a tough lesson for a young quarterback,” Smith said of the interception. “When you go back outside, (you) learn more about yourself. In the second half, he did a good job of pushing the ball up the field a little bit. I thought he was cleaner in the pocket, and we did not do anything. I could see what was going on, but then he did not take any risks, which is common.”

Last year, when Marcus Mariota was struggling, Smith resisted replacing the quarterback until it was too late. It is too early to give up on the second-year QB completely, but Ridder’s play has been frustrating for a team that expected to contend for the NFC South title. The past two weeks have been eerily similar to last year’s offensive struggles, with Pitts and London out of the offense for long periods of time.

London suggested after the match that it was up to the players to turn things around. “Probably ourselves,” he said when asked what’s holding the Falcons back. “After this incident, we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and understand a few things.

We have good players on our team. We need to go on the field and do great and wonderful things! Maybe it begins with the players that catch the ball. Or maybe it is how the quarterback plays or maybe how the coach plans the game. But no matter what, we cannot keep everyone interested if we only score 6.5 points on average in two games.”

Falcons to Change QB After Their Loss to Jaguars in London

Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith wants to see the players who can face adversity. He’s in luck because the Falcons flew home from  London after a 23-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The team’s momentum of a 2-0 start is gone, followed by questions about the quarterback. Offensive players Drake London and Kyle Pitts aren’t producing much, and a strong defensive start is being overshadowed by offensive ineptitude.

“If you’ve got the wrong guys, it’s easy to splinter and ride the roller coaster, but we have the right guys,” Smith said after the loss at Wembley Stadium. “We know we have to get back and get this thing rolling and get back on the winning track.”

Questions on the quarterback

The most commented statement from Smith after the game was: “It’s always going to start with me, and we have to go back and objectively look at everything. Whatever we have to do to get this thing jump-started is what we’re going to do.”

The “Whatever” in the statement indicates the consideration of change at Quarterback. Smith also mentioned that he didn’t consider replacing Ridder with veteran backup Taylor Heinicke for the second half.

Ridder was 9-for-14 for 73 yards and two ugly interceptions in the opening 30 minutes. “I did a terrible job of taking care of the ball,” said Ridder. “That changed the momentum of the game. We have to find a way to start faster, whatever we have to do, and I have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.”

Smith called the interceptions as “tough, tough lessons to learn for a young quarterback.” Ridder finished the game 19-for-31 with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Slow starters at the beginning

The Falcons went into the game knowing they had a problem with getting into rhythm early offensively, and they left the game without fixing it. They trailed 17-0 at halftime. In the last two games, they have been outscored 30-3 in the first half.

“We have to find a way to get jump-started earlier,” Smith said. “It’s always going to start with me. We have the right guys in that locker room. We’re going to get back to Atlanta, and we have to get this thing jump-started.”

The Falcons’ only points of the game came on their first drive of the second half when they went 75 yards on eight plays, and Ridder found London for a 15-yard touchdown.

The One bright spot

The Falcons’ defense ranked eighth in the league in yards per play allowed after Sunday’s game. First-year defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s unit continues to impress in adverse circumstances.

Atlanta had two sacks, seven quarterback hurries, and was stout against the run all day, allowing the Jaguars running backs only 63 rushing yards.

A defensive wrinkle on the go

Cornerback A.J. Terrell “traveled” with Jacksonville wide receiver Calvin Ridley at times in the game. That’s a change for the Falcons, who usually have their star cornerback stay on one side of the field no matter what team alignment they follow.

Assistant head coach for defense Jerry Gray hinted that the change might be coming but said the Falcons wanted to be sure it didn’t break down the structure of the rest of the defense.
