At 72, Bill Belichick, no longer in the NFL, makes his mark at the Super Bowl in New Orleans

At 72 years old and out of the NFL, Bill Belichick still managed to grab attention during Super Bowl week.

What was the former Patriots coach wearing on the red carpet?

All of his Super Bowl rings.

Belichick was the center of attention at the NFL Honors, where he not only showed off his impressive collection of Super Bowl rings, earned from winning more titles than any other coach in NFL history, but also got playfully teased during the awards show. On social media, people were less kind, especially after he walked arm-in-arm with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

Belichick even ditched his usual hoodie for a burgundy sports coat, while Hudson looked stunning in a silver sequin dress.

These days, Belichick is as much a topic on TMZ as he is in NFL news or his new role as head coach at North Carolina. Hudson caught attention when she appeared to wear one of Belichick’s Super Bowl rings on her ring finger, sparking engagement rumors on social media. The Daily Mail even posted pictures of her “showing off a stunning sparkler” at a charity event in New Orleans on Wednesday.

Hold on, paparazzi.

Hudson later posted on Instagram that the ring she wore at the Honors was actually a Bridgewater State University Bearcats National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Championship ring — not a Super Bowl ring.

Like any young couple — or at least a couple with one young person — they were spotted out after the show enjoying Bourbon Street bars.

The grumpy coach who didn’t engage with reporters in New England is now a media favorite after his split with the Patriots. He jokes around and shares insights on “The Pat McAfee Show” and has even hosted two podcasts. He appeared on the NFL Network on Thursday night but refused to pick a Super Bowl winner between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

“He’s changed in a good way. I like it,” retired Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski told The Associated Press. “I like it big time. How he’s been representing. How he’s swaggy. How he’s been in a new world, not coaching in the NFL. He’s been spectacular. Everyone loves him now.”

Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as head coach with the New England Patriots and two more as an assistant with the New York Giants, even seems to have developed a sense of humor, at least about his relationship with Hudson.

Host and rapper Snoop Dogg made fun of the age gap between Belichick and Hudson during his monologue, joking about remembering a time when the Cowboys were good and the Chiefs were bad, and how Belichick’s girlfriend wasn’t even born yet.

Belichick and Hudson laughed politely while the crowd reacted with “awws” to the joke.

Social media users quickly joined in on the fun, with one person posting a picture of the couple at the awards show and writing, “You can make fun of Bill Belichick all you want, but I think it’s really nice that he took his girlfriend to the NFL Awards even if it is a school night.” Another shared a collage featuring Napster and “Toy Story 2,” joking, “All of these things are older than Bill Belichick’s girlfriend.”

Date nights might become harder to come by once Belichick returns to college.

Belichick signed a five-year deal with North Carolina in December worth $10 million per year in base and supplemental salary, with the first three years guaranteed, including buyout terms. There’s also up to $3.5 million in annual bonuses.

That’s plenty of money for Belichick to buy as many rings as Hudson wants — just like her boyfriend — for all her fingers.

Arik Armstead of the Jaguars receives the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award at the NFL Honors in Kansas City

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead, known for his Armstead Academic Project which helps support early childhood education, was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year on Thursday night.

Armstead, who has been open about how his struggles with reading as a child made him feel self-conscious, frequently visits schools to read to children. His goal is to make sure young students, regardless of their background, have the resources they need to succeed in education.

“This is a huge honor,” Armstead said. “It’s a huge sense of responsibility that I feel to carry this forward and continue to serve — and serve more people.”

Armstead expressed gratitude to his parents for “instilling a serving spirit into me at a young age.”

“Your guidance is the biggest reason why I’m where I’m at in my life right now,” he said. “I hope I make you proud.”

Armstead ended his speech with a message to the audience at the Saenger Theater and those watching on television.

“We live in a world that is constantly trying to divide us,” Armstead said. “But I believe in humanity. I believe that we are all more alike than we are different and I believe that all of us have the power to be the change we want to see in our society.

“I just encourage you to try to be a blessing in someone else’s life and see how that changes your life,” he added.

Questions Mount Over NFL’s Secretive Facemask Penalty Reviews

This season, officials have overlooked several blatant face mask infractions, including two incidents during Thursday night games over three weeks.

NFL executive Troy Vincent highlighted the challenges faced by officials during live gameplay, where factors like fast-paced action and similar glove and face mask colors make calls difficult.

He acknowledged the frustration stemming from such errors, calling it a serious issue. Vincent suggested adding face mask penalties to the list of infractions reviewable through replay assist, allowing officials to make better-informed decisions on the field.

Incidents like the one involving Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold, who was brought down by his face mask without a penalty being called, have drawn attention to this issue.

Another example occurred on October 3, when a missed face mask penalty on a running back shifted the momentum, eventually leading to an overtime loss. Vincent emphasized the need for improved accuracy in such calls, which have repeatedly surfaced this season.

He also mentioned other potential candidates for replay assist, including tripping, illegal formations on kickoffs, and taunting, as areas requiring consideration.

Under current regulations, replay assist is limited to correcting erroneously thrown flags or aiding in enforcing existing penalties.

Expanding its use will be reviewed by the competition committee before any recommendations are presented for owner approval.

Eliminating Low Blocks

Vincent strongly advocated for banning low blocks below the knee due to the risk of serious injuries. He argued for consistency with high school and college football, where blocks are already restricted to above the knee and below the neck.

He stressed that this adjustment aligns with broader safety measures implemented to protect players’ heads and necks.

Revising Onside Kick Rules

Changes to the onside kick rules are also on the table, following the overhaul of kickoff regulations on a trial basis.

Vincent described the onside kick as a largely ceremonial play with a low recovery rate and suggested exploring alternatives, such as allowing teams to attempt a single play to retain possession.

Commanders’ Potential RFK Stadium Site

The search for a new stadium for the Washington Commanders has seen progress, particularly regarding the RFK Stadium site.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and team owner Josh Harris recently met with lawmakers to discuss transferring the land to the District of Columbia. Goodell expressed optimism, noting bipartisan support for advancing the project.

Expanding the NFL Schedule

Discussions around an 18-game season continue, although no decisions have been finalized. Goodell confirmed that any changes would require player union approval and are currently in the analysis stage.

Jaguars Name Liam Coen as Head Coach

In a surprising turn of events, Liam Coen has decided to leave his position with the Buccaneers to become the Jaguars’ head coach.

This decision followed a whirlwind two days during which Coen initially declined an interview, only to reconsider after Jacksonville parted ways with General Manager Trent Baalke.

Sources revealed that the Jaguars contacted Coen again after Baalke’s departure, leading to extensive negotiations that concluded with Coen accepting the job.

Coen inherits a team that finished last in the AFC South with a 4-13 record. The organization, which has seen four head coaches in six years, aims to find long-term stability under Coen’s leadership.

What Makes Coen a Strong Fit for Jacksonville?

Coen brings years of experience from his time with the Rams under Sean McVay and as an offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky.

His ability to adapt offensive schemes and tailor playcalling to player strengths has been highly praised. In 2024, he guided the Buccaneers to one of their best offensive seasons, seriously improving their run game and aiding quarterback Baker Mayfield in achieving career-best stats.

The Jaguars, struggling with an inconsistent rushing attack and a heavy reliance on quarterback Trevor Lawrence, hope Coen can bring much-needed balance to their offense.

His success in Tampa Bay, where he elevated the team’s rushing and passing games, suggests he could provide a similar boost in Jacksonville.

Coen’s First Priorities

As head coach, Coen is expected to prioritize hiring an offensive line coach to address deficiencies in the team’s running game.

The Jaguars ranked near the bottom of the league in rushing metrics over the past two seasons, underscoring the need for improvement upfront.

Coen’s hiring marks a pivotal moment for Jacksonville as they aim to build a competitive foundation under his leadership.
