Jahmyr Gibbs Set for Bigger Receiving Role in Revamped Lions Offense

Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has made a significant impact in his first two NFL seasons, catching 104 passes and proving to be a dynamic offensive weapon. Looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Detroit Lions are aiming to expand his role in the passing game, a move that aligns with his demonstrated playmaking ability. This strategic shift suggests that the team is focused on maximizing Gibbs’ versatility and keeping their offense among the league’s most productive.

Following the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, John Morton has stepped into the role and is already making adjustments to the playbook. One notable change is Gibbs’ alignment — he will now be lined up outside of the backfield more often. This tweak is expected to create new matchup opportunities and add unpredictability to Detroit’s already potent offense, which led the league in scoring last year.

Jahmyr Gibbs Set for Bigger Receiving Role in Revamped Lions Offense

Gibbs expressed excitement about his expanded responsibilities, acknowledging that while the overall offensive system remains familiar, the increased use of split-out formations will be a new and welcome challenge. He stated that he’s been eager for more chances to operate as a receiving threat outside the traditional backfield role. Morton appears committed to giving him that opportunity, signaling a more prominent and creative use of Gibbs moving forward.

After scoring 20 touchdowns last season, Gibbs has clearly established himself as a vital piece of the Lions’ offense. Expanding his role in the passing game could make Detroit’s attack even more dangerous. If Morton’s changes work as intended, the team may maintain its strong offensive performance under new leadership and keep building on last season’s success without losing momentum.
