On his 40th birthday, LeBron James claims he could play for “another 5 or 7 years,” but he won’t stick around that long

LeBron James marked his 40th birthday on Monday with a sense of gratitude for his long basketball career and optimism for his future with the Los Angeles Lakers.

When asked how he would know when it’s time to retire, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer gave an honest evaluation of his abilities.

“To be honest, if I really wanted to, I could probably play this game at a high level for about another – weird that I might say this – but about another five or seven years, if I wanted to,” James said. “But I’m not going to do that.”

James has already had one of the longest careers in NBA history, but he knows it’s nearing its end. He has said many times that he won’t continue playing longer than he should, but that moment hasn’t come yet: James is still playing at a high level for the Lakers, who are leading the Pacific Division, with averages of 23.5 points, 9.0 assists, and 7.9 rebounds this season.

LeBron James warms up before the game

“It’s kind of laughable, really, to know where I am, to see where I am still, playing the game at a high level,” James said. “Still being such a young man, but old in the scheme of how many years I’ve got in this profession.

(I) just think back to when I came into the league. That’s like the first thing I thought about. You came in as an 18-year-old kid, and now you’re sitting here as a 40-year-old, a 22-year vet, with a 20-year-old in the NBA as well. It’s pretty cool.”

James is in his 22nd NBA season — more than any player except Vince Carter, who also played 22 seasons. He will join a small group of players who have played after turning 40 when the Lakers face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night. The Akron, Ohio native brought Cleveland its only major professional sports championship in 2016.

James shared that his milestone birthday hit him with a sense of disbelief. “I had a decade of the 30s, so to just wake up and just be like, ‘Oh shoot, oh damn, you’re 40?’” James said with a grin.

He also felt the passage of time two months ago when he and his son, Bronny, became the first father and son to play together in the NBA.

LeBron is also feeling encouraged by the Lakers’ strong performance this season, which has improved under new coach JJ Redick. Los Angeles made a move to strengthen the team on Sunday, trading D’Angelo Russell to Brooklyn in exchange for veteran defender Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton.

“Right now, I think we’re a very good team,” James said. “I think we have a chance to compete with anybody in the league. Are we at a championship level? Can we win a championship right now? No, I don’t think so.

LeBron James
LeBron James (NBA)

That’s good, because we have so much room to improve, and we also just added two new guys as well. We’ll see how we incorporate those guys. It should be fun as well. But we’ll see. I don’t know if that determines if I stick around longer, because it doesn’t change my career in any sense or fashion.”

James isn’t thinking about anything beyond his time in Los Angeles, where he has made a comfortable life for himself and his family since 2018. He still plans for the Lakers to be his final stop in his legendary career.

“I would love for it to end here,” James said. “That would be the plan. I came here to play the last stage of my career and to finish it off here. But I’m also not silly or too jaded to know the business of the game as well, to know the business of basketball. But I think my relationship with this organization speaks for itself.”

LeBron and Bronny James Break NBA Records in Historic Father-Son Debut

LeBron James and his 20-year-old son Bronny made history during the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, becoming the first father-son duo to ever play together in an NBA game. This milestone came after years of LeBron expressing his dream of sharing the court with his son, and it was realized when they checked into the game together in the second quarter. The moment was emotional for both, as LeBron recalled how special it was to be at the scorer’s table with Bronny, knowing it was a moment he would never forget.

Their time on the court was brief, lasting about 2 ½ minutes, but filled with significance. LeBron, who had already played 13 minutes, missed two shots before dunking the ball. Bronny had an early offensive rebound and a missed tip-in, followed by a near-miss on his first NBA 3-pointer. Though their playtime was short, the crowd gave them a standing ovation when Bronny exited the game, acknowledging the gravity of the historic moment.

After the Lakers’ 110-103 victory, the father and son shared an intimate moment in the locker room. They stopped in the tunnel to embrace LeBron’s wife, Savannah, and Bronny’s mother, who were both present to witness the history-making event. It was also a special day for the James family, as it was the 10th birthday of LeBron’s younger daughter, Zhuri. The significance of this moment was amplified by the Lakers’ first opening-night win in LeBron’s seven seasons with the team.

LeBron and Bronny James Break NBA Records in Historic Father-Son Debut

LeBron and Bronny’s achievement was echoed by the presence of another iconic father-son duo: Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. The two Major League Baseball stars, who were the first father-son pair to play together in MLB, sat courtside at the game. Their presence symbolized the rare nature of such family achievements in professional sports. The Griffeys and the Jameses shared photos and warm words before the game, reflecting on their respective historic accomplishments.

LeBron had talked about his dream of playing with Bronny for years, even before Bronny was drafted by the Lakers as the 55th overall pick. When the moment finally arrived, LeBron reflected on how surreal it was but emphasized that both father and son stayed focused on their roles within the team. For LeBron, it wasn’t about the spectacle but rather about making sure they contributed to the team’s success. This milestone, while emotional, was approached with professionalism.

Father-son pairings are rare in professional sports, with notable examples like the Griffeys, Tim Raines and his son, and Gordie Howe with his sons. However, LeBron and Bronny’s achievement stands out, as LeBron is still one of the top players in the NBA in his 22nd season. As the Lakers aim to return to championship form, LeBron remains crucial to their success, and Bronny’s addition to the team adds an exciting new dynamic.

Bronny’s path to the NBA was particularly inspiring, especially given his health scare in 2023, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and underwent open-heart surgery. Despite this, Bronny went on to play a shortened season at USC and declared for the NBA draft. The Lakers selected him, and Bronny has since been adjusting to professional life, including practicing and playing in preseason games alongside his father. Both LeBron and Bronny have stressed the importance of preparation and professionalism, knowing it will take time for Bronny to fully adapt to the NBA.

Although the Lakers haven’t revealed how long Bronny will stay on the team, it’s likely he will spend time in the G League with the South Bay Lakers to continue developing his game. LeBron and Lakers coach JJ Redick have spoken highly of the South Bay Lakers’ player development program. With several other small guards on the Lakers’ roster, Bronny may not see regular NBA minutes just yet, but the organization remains committed to his growth and development, making their historic achievement even more meaningful.

Caitlin Clark considers LeBron James the greatest of all time

As LeBron James continues his career in the later stages, he has always made sure to recognize others. One person he has supported is Caitlin Clark, a star for the Indiana Fever who has brought a lot of attention to the WNBA.

However, there are always critics who question Clark’s game and the media coverage she receives. This is similar to James, who was under pressure as the face of the Cleveland Cavaliers at just 19 years old.

Now, Clark is working hard to help the Fever become a successful team again. It’s a big challenge, but James has shown his support for her in the past, along with other important NBA figures. Clark appreciates his kind words and made it clear that she considers James the greatest basketball player ever, as she shared with Sean Gregory of Time Magazine:

“LeBron has never directly messaged me, but it’s been cool to see his support for myself and the W overall. You can really tell that he really watches and turns it on. He’s been kind of a big fan of myself from college and now in the W. I mean, he’s the greatest basketball player of all time. So I think that’s pretty cool.”

LeBron James dunks in the 2nd half

There is a growing connection between the NBA and the WNBA, with players from both sides speaking out. As the WNBA continues to grow, having players like Clark helps speed up the process.

Clark made a huge impact in NCAA Women’s Basketball while at Iowa, and it was no surprise she continued her success at the professional level. However, other great players like A’Ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas, and Sabrina Ionescu also deserve recognition, and James has made sure to give them the attention they deserve.

James has been very vocal about his support for the WNBA, and his words carry a lot of weight. Hopefully, both he and Clark can help bring in more viewers and continue to grow women’s sports.

LeBron James stands up for Caitlin Clark against critics
Like many great players, Caitlin Clark has faced criticism, even though she is a generational talent living her dream. For some reason, people dislike her success.

The 22-year-old faced criticism throughout her time at Iowa, and it only increased when she entered the WNBA. As she adjusted in her rookie season, LeBron James used social media to defend Clark and call out her critics.

Analysis: Only LeBron James truly understands what is happening at the moment and what lies ahead for him

LeBron James was the star in Las Vegas at this time last year, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to win the first-ever NBA Cup. Things are different now.

Lakers coach JJ Redick explained this week that James is missing from practice due to “personal reasons” and “left foot soreness,” which is why he won’t play in the game against Minnesota on Friday. Recently, there’s been talk about possible trades involving James, with teams like Golden State potentially interested if he became available. James is also turning 40 in about two weeks.

Whenever James isn’t playing, it makes headlines. Taking time off for personal reasons raises questions. It could mean he’s hurt, frustrated with the Lakers’ recent struggles, or simply needing a break. But for now, it’s clear he won’t be playing on Friday.

“All of this is very fluid,” Redick said when asked about James’ absence. “All of it is. All of it is. That’s what’s crystallized.”

James holds the power with his no-trade clause. If he wants to be traded, it’s likely he’ll be. If not, he’ll stay with the Lakers, alongside his son Bronny.

LeBron James reacts in the 2nd half

The Lakers only have two games next week, so it’s a good time for James to rest if his foot is bothering him or if the toll of 22 seasons is catching up with him. In short, nobody knows what’s going on except LeBron.

He’s the oldest player in the league, has broken nearly every record, and has more money than he could ever spend. There’s nothing left to prove. He is under contract for next season, but whether he plays after this season is uncertain.

“I’m not going to play that much longer, to be completely honest. I don’t know how many years that is, if it’s one year, two years, whatever the case may be,” James said last month. “I’m not playing ‘til the wheels fall off. I’m not going to be that guy. I’m not going to be the guy who’s disrespecting the game because I just want to be out on the floor. That won’t be me.”

Despite his lower scoring average (23 points per game, his lowest since his rookie season), his rebounding and assist numbers are up. The only other player averaging 23 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists per game this season is Denver’s Nikola Jokic, a strong MVP contender. So, his performance is still solid.

LeBron James kneels on the court in the 2nd half

It’s also worth noting that the NBA trade season is heating up. Starting Sunday, 85 players are eligible to be traded, and there’s a lot of buzz around big names, including Jimmy Butler’s future in Miami.

“Narratives,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Thursday. “That’s going to happen, you know, in every organization at some point during the season.”

This might be one of those moments for the Lakers. As of Friday, they’ve lost seven of their last 10 games, with four of those losses being by at least 25 points. James has seemed frustrated, but that’s understandable after tough losses.

Even though James isn’t playing, his presence is still felt in Las Vegas. There’s a large advertisement with his image near the baggage claim at the airport, promoting a liquor company. But on the court, he won’t be seen, and it’s unclear when he will be next.

LeBron James describes Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami as a game-changer for the MLS, labeling him as the “soccer GOAT.”

NBA superstar LeBron James has weighed in on Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami in the MLS, expressing his belief that Messi’s presence has brought a new level of prestige to the league.

Following his departure from Europe last summer, Messi joined Inter Miami, concluding his illustrious career filled with numerous trophies.

Despite receiving offers from Saudi Arabia and contemplating a return to Barcelona, Messi ultimately opted for the MLS in July. His arrival generated significant excitement, with global superstars tuning in to watch his debut in the Leagues Cup.

LeBron James attended Messi’s first match at the DRV PNK Stadium in July, witnessing the Argentine forward’s impactful performance off the bench against Cruz Azul, where he secured a 2-1 victory for Inter Miami with a stoppage-time free-kick.

The Los Angeles Lakers star believes Messi’s presence in the MLS has transformed the league, attracting a fresh wave of soccer enthusiasts. In a conversation with ESPN journalist Dave McMenamin, the 39-year-old expressed his profound respect for Messi and his remarkable achievements.

“Seeing the GOAT of soccer, Lionel Messi, grace the MLS with his immense talent is a game-changer for us. His arrival not only elevates the league but also inspires a new generation of soccer fans in our country,” said James.

“Messi’s journey exemplifies unparalleled dedication, work ethic, and talent, and I have nothing but respect and admiration for him. I wish him all the best,” James added.

While Messi follows in the footsteps of football legends like Pele, Johan Cruyff, and Franz Beckenbauer in playing in the MLS, recent years have also seen stars like Thierry Henry and David Beckham bring their talents to the USA.

NBA Fans Disapprove as LeBron James and Lakers Fall to Dillon Brooks and the Houston Rockets

The Los Angeles Lakers experienced a disappointing defeat against the Houston Rockets on Monday night, succumbing to a score of 135-119.

LeBron James showcased a double-double performance, scoring 23 points and accumulating 10 assists with just one turnover. While he managed to convert 2 of 5 attempts from beyond the arc, his free throw accuracy was less impressive at 3-8.

Defensively, the Lakers faced challenges as the Rockets achieved a 53 percent shooting accuracy from the field and distributed 36 assists. This marks the seventh consecutive game in which Los Angeles has allowed a minimum of 110 points.

Fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the team’s subpar performance on social media platforms, highlighting concerns about the Lakers’ defensive struggles and lack of consistency throughout the season.

Notable comments from NBA fans and analysts included critiques on the team’s defensive lapses, the apparent disinterest in the game, and concerns about the team’s ability to maintain a consistent level of performance.

The frustration was evident in remarks addressing the team’s defensive vulnerabilities, especially in allowing a season-high 78 points in the first half.

On the offensive front, Dillon Brooks of the Houston Rockets continued his ongoing rivalry with LeBron James, stemming from their previous playoff encounter in 2023.

Brooks contributed 17 points, including a three-pointer to conclude the first half, and engaged in a flagrant foul incident with James in the second half. Additionally, a brief altercation with Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt resulted in Vanderbilt’s ejection from the game.

The loss against the Rockets dropped the Lakers’ record to 24-24, and they have not held a winning record of at least two games above .500 since December 28. The team’s inconsistent performance continues to be a source of frustration for fans and analysts alike.

LeBron James Excited as Bryce and Sierra Canyon Make Incredible Comeback, Bulls Legend Watches On

Bryce James and his Sierra Canyon Trailblazers took the spotlight as they secured a victory against the Knights with a final score of 81-75. With his brother, Bronny James, and Zhuri present at the game, Bryce delivered an impressive performance that made his father, LeBron James, immensely proud.

LeBron took to Instagram to express his excitement while watching the game, posting, “Wow!!!!!! What a comeback,” and tagging SC High School at the end. The Bulls legend, Scottie Pippen, was also in attendance, marking his first public appearance after missing the Ring of Honor gala.

Pippen Sr. and his ex-wife, Larsa Pippen, have been exemplary co-parents, supporting their children, which explains Pippen’s presence at his son’s game against a top-tier team. Courtside, along with Pippen, were Kenyon Martin Sr. and the James siblings.

Sierra Canyon lived up to expectations, entering the game with an impressive 18-game winning streak and an overall record of 23-1. However, the undefeated record of Notre Dame, with a 24-0 standing, was broken in this matchup.

Bryce James has been enjoying a successful stint with Sierra Canyon, benefiting from the support of a talented roster, including four-star seniors Isaiah Elohim and Justin Pippen. Tonight’s game showcased a balanced team effort, with players like Elohim, Pippen, Noah Williams, Bryce Cofield, and James contributing significantly to overcome a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Bryce concluded the game with eight points off the bench.

Notre Dame, led by rapper Master P’s son, Mercy Miller, dominated the game, particularly in the second and third quarters. However, Sierra Canyon turned the tide after a timeout following Miller’s three-pointer at the start of the fourth quarter. This strategic move marked the beginning of Notre Dame’s downfall, allowing Sierra Canyon to finish the game with a strong comeback.

Fans Criticize Anthony Davis’ Shooting Performance as Lakers Fall to Jazz in the Absence of LeBron James

It was a tough night for the Los Angeles Lakers.

With LeBron James out with an ankle injury, the Lakers were hoping to rely on Anthony Davis and company to power the team to a win over a Utah Jazz team that it is jockeying for position within the Western Conference standings.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, it just wasn’t enough.

Los Angeles Lakers @Lakers

Final from Utah

The 132-125 loss dropped the Lakers to 19-20 on the season while allowing the Jazz to remain in front in the standings as it improved to 20-20. The Lakers are currently in 11th place in the Western Conference and would be the first team out of the Play-In Tournament.

D’Angelo Russell was a bright spot for the Lakers in the game, scoring 39 points with eight assists and three rebounds. Austin Reaves contributed 19 points, Rui Hachimura had 17 off the bench, and Christian Wood contributed 15 from the bench.

However, the most polarizing day came from Davis. He had a triple-double, scoring 15 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, and dishing out 11 assists. While that appears impressive at the outset, the base stats do not tell the whole story.

He had an extremely rough shooting day, going 5-of-21 on field goals. This inefficiency certainly played a major role in the final score not going the Lakers’ way and dimming the otherwise solid stat line.

Fans on social media expressed frustration with Davis’s shooting struggles and viewed his stat line as a weak triple-double.

🐍HoodiiMamba 🐍 @HoodiiMamba

i think its time we officially remove Anthony Davis from Top 3 PF/Center Talks

dude is 5/20 when hes supposed to be the Number 1 Option

terrible game for AD but he was due

that does not affect how incredible he has been all season long, just like LeBron’s off nights

the consistency is yet to be seen from others, but Anthony Davis has been our best, also LeBron.

Primetime @PrimeTimeBS15

Anthony Davis didnt score a single point in the 4th qtr of a close game, missing every single shot he took.

Completely pathetic. The Lakers couldve won this game.

Anthony Davis looks like he’s missing shots on purpose. He’s trying to force foul calls and throwing it up high off the glass.

The loss and related drop in the standings is certainly concerning for a Lakers team with high hopes, but a few pickups at the deadline could certainly make a difference.

Los Angeles will look to rebound Sunday when it hosts the Oklahoma City Thunder at 10:30 P.M. ET.

LeBron James’ Unusual Bench Behavior Raises Eyebrows During Preseason Game

LeBron James is getting ready for the regular season, and in a recent preseason game against the Golden State Warriors, he displayed an unusual behavior rarely seen during regular-season games. The 21-year veteran played in the first half and, knowing he wouldn’t return to the game, changed out of his uniform at halftime and returned to the bench area as a spectator for the second half. Notably, he was caught eating dinner while watching his teammates in action.

LeBron James
LeBron James

While this practice is somewhat standard during the preseason, it raised eyebrows, including those of Lakers legend Michael Cooper. On his “Showtime with Coop” podcast, Cooper expressed his disapproval, saying, “I didn’t like that. He’s LeBron James, but still, you’ve got to have respect for the game, man. I don’t mind the guy eating, but go eat in the locker room, and then when you come out, be part of the team, not just sit on the end of the bench eating.”

LeBron James has a history of incorporating food and drink into unusual situations, famously bringing a glass of wine to a game in 2018 that he ultimately didn’t play in. While post-game meals are generally harmless and may be part of James’ routine, the timing was unusual.

James is known for his habits and likely didn’t want to disrupt his post-game routine, but as his post-game activities occurred earlier than his teammates, he wanted to show support for the rest of the Lakers. While some, like Cooper, may view it as a breach of unwritten rules, the Lakers seem to have no issue with James maintaining his routine and supporting his team in his own unique way.
