Giddey’s halfcourt buzzer-beater lifts the Bulls to victory, just one night after the Lakers’ thrilling finish

Josh Giddey knew right away that his shot was on target. Almost instantly, his teammates rushed to celebrate with him.

Giddey’s buzzer-beating halfcourt shot marked the thrilling end to one of the wildest finishes in the NBA this season, leading the Chicago Bulls to a 119-117 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night.

“Special moment to do it with these guys, this team,” Giddey said.

The Lakers, on the other hand, went from a dramatic win over Indiana, where LeBron James hit a buzzer-beating tip-in on Wednesday, to a tough loss. They also suffered another defeat to Chicago, having been beaten badly by the Bulls in Los Angeles on Saturday.

“Devastation,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “It’s a hell of a way to lose a basketball game.”

The Lakers were in control, leading by 13 points midway through the fourth quarter. They were ahead 115-110 after Austin Reaves made two free throws with 12.6 seconds left, but they still ended up losing for the eighth time in their last 12 games. The Lakers now have a day to recover before wrapping up their four-game trip in Memphis.

“We put ourselves in position to win, gave up a lot of 3s in the fourth quarter, still put ourselves in position to win,” James said. “Horrible turnover by myself, miscommunication the play before that. AR tried to save us. Tip your hats.”

The Bulls hit 11 of 14 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, including three in the final 10 seconds. Patrick Williams started the barrage with a 3-pointer.

Giddey then stole a pass from James and passed it to Coby White, who made a 3-pointer to give the Bulls a 116-115 lead with 6.1 seconds left.

Reaves responded by driving for a layup to give the Lakers a 117-116 lead with 3.3 seconds remaining, but the Bulls still had time to win.

Giddey inbounded the ball to Patrick Williams, got it back, and took a shot near the Bulls logo. He held his follow-through until the ball went through the net, securing the Bulls’ ninth win in 11 games and sparking a wild celebration.

Billy Donovan looks on in the 2nd half

“We’ve shown over the last month to six weeks that we can beat anybody,” Giddey said. “The way we play the game, I think it wears people down. We get up and down. We run. We put heat on them to get back. A lot of veteran teams don’t particularly want to get back and play in transition.”

A month ago, the Bulls seemed like a team with little energy. After trading Zach LaVine to Sacramento before the deadline, they were on a six-game losing streak, leaving them with a 22-35 record. Since then, they’ve gone 11-5, beating strong teams like the Lakers twice, Denver, and Indiana.

Giddey and White have been performing at a high level.

Giddey recorded his fifth triple-double on Thursday, finishing with 25 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. The only Bulls player with more in a season was Michael Jordan, who had 15 in 1988-89.

White scored 26 points, adding to a stretch where he scored 35 or more points in three straight games, a career-high. The Bulls have shown resilience, never giving up. Coach Billy Donovan said that the players’ work ethic started back in September, during offseason workouts before training camp.

“We’ve got to be in great shape to play this way,” he said. “They’ve got to push themselves. I think a lot of that stemmed before training camp started, when they all came back in September. They played most of their pickup games with a 14-second shot clock just to kind of get that mentality down. We tried to go through training camp like that. I think there’s advantages by really trying to play in a way that forces these guys to be in great shape.”

LeBron James caps off a strong finish to lead the Lakers over the Pacers and extend his record scoring streak

LeBron James started the fourth quarter on Wednesday at risk of ending his NBA record streak of consecutive games scoring in double digits.

He ended the game with another remarkable achievement.

The 40-year-old James scored his final 13th point with a buzzer-beating tip-in, giving the Los Angeles Lakers a 120-119 win over the Indiana Pacers, and extending his streak of double-digit games to 1,283. Not that James was focused on the streak.

“It’s whatever it takes to help your teammates win,” James said after a replay confirmed the game-winning basket. “I can do other things to impact the game, that’s the beauty of my game, I’ve always built it my whole life as far as being three-dimensional, being able to get my guys involved, being able to rebound, defend and sprinkle some points in here and there.”

As the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James has done much more than just “sprinkle” points, especially against the Pacers. Wednesday was no exception. He came close to a triple-double, finishing with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists, despite shooting just 4 of 12 from the field and missing all three of his 3-point attempts.

It looked like the Pacers might finally have the upper hand on James, who they’ve faced numerous times. They held him to 0-for-6 shooting with just three points through the first three quarters, forcing him to pass as Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves stepped up for the Lakers.

Stats people started looking at James’ lowest field goal totals and remembered his last single-digit scoring game, an eight-point performance against Milwaukee on January 5, 2007.

But as the Pacers closed the gap from a 17-point deficit to 95-92 after three quarters, James returned to form.

LeBron James and Pascal Siakam in the 2nd half

“Obviously, I know I can score the ball,” he said. “But until we find a little rhythm offensively or whatever the case may be, the defensive side is the most important for our ballclub.”

James scored his first basket just 49 seconds into the fourth quarter. Another basket came 37 seconds later, followed by two free throws and a driving layup, putting the Lakers up 105-92 with just under 9 1/2 minutes left.

The Pacers weren’t done, though.

Indiana fought back, retaking the lead for the final time on Tyrese Haliburton’s three-point play with 42.2 seconds left, giving them a 119-118 lead. This put the Lakers in danger of losing their fourth straight game.

But James wasn’t going to let that happen. With the clock running down and Doncic taking a midrange shot that bounced off the rim, James appeared out of nowhere.

“I was just trying to read the ball off the rim,” James said. “It kind of looked like it was a little short, but I knew it had a chance to bounce in if it hit the front rim. Once it came out, I kind of wanted to tap it with enough time. Obviously, you could probably see me looking over at the Jumbotron to see if I actually got it in time and it was a good play for us.”

It was yet another frustrating chapter in the Pacers’ rivalry with James, who had eliminated them from the playoffs multiple times, first with Miami and then again with Cleveland.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever been walked off in the NBA, so probably fitting,” Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton said after talking with James following the game. “It was obviously a great play by a great player.”

LeBron James returns after a 7-game injury hiatus, but the Lakers suffer a heavy loss with nothing going their way

LeBron James came back from a two-week injury break on Saturday night, looking rested and ready to help the Los Angeles Lakers push toward the postseason.

However, the Lakers faced a tough 146-115 loss to the Chicago Bulls, with very little going right for them.

“We’ve got to play better basketball than we did tonight, and what we did on our last road trip,” James said before the Lakers left for a four-game road trip, starting in Orlando on Monday.

James scored 17 points after missing the Lakers’ previous seven games due to a strained left groin, but the NBA’s all-time leading scorer seemed a bit rusty at times, especially late in the first quarter when he threw a long sideline inbounds pass that sailed out of bounds without getting close to one of his teammates.

But James’ return was just one part of a poor performance by the Lakers, who lost their second straight game and reached another low point in their up-and-down season since acquiring Luka Doncic.

Even the return of starting forward Rui Hachimura, who had been out for 12 games with a knee injury, couldn’t help the Lakers against the motivated Bulls.

“I don’t know if we assumed because we had everybody back that it was just going to be like it was three weeks ago, and that’s just not how this works,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “The thing that we have talked about all season long, though, is grace, so the group inherently gets some grace for what these last three weeks has looked like. (But) that was the worst our defense has looked, frankly, all year, but certainly in the last three months.”

The Lakers have been strong for long stretches with their new superstar duo, but they’ve also had enough poor performances to show they still have a lot of work ahead. Their schedule has been tough, with 20 games in five weeks, including five home games in seven days.

The 40-year-old James is still confident the Lakers will find their best form. Before his injury, they had won eight straight games, and they managed a three-game winning streak earlier this week before he came back.

LeBron James and Kevin Hunter in the 2nd half

“I already know what this team is capable of,” James said. “No matter who’s been in the lineup, who’s been out of the lineup, we’ve been able to sustain our effort and try to continue to play the right way, both offensively and defensively. It was great to see, even through some of the adversity, even through the injuries and the schedule, we were still able to win ballgames.”

James didn’t give a clear answer about how his groin injury was healing, which happened late in the Lakers’ loss to Boston on March 8. Los Angeles lost all four games on that road trip but then won three straight at home before their current two-game losing streak.

“I just take it day by day,” James said about his injury. “I can’t work out what’s going to happen in the future, but obviously I got some work on it today. Hopefully a little more on the plane. It’s a long flight to Orlando, and then I’ll get ready for Monday. I hope it’s behind, but I won’t look too far in the future.”

Before the injury, James was averaging 25.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 8.2 rebounds in his 22nd NBA season.

Hachimura, the Lakers’ fourth-leading scorer with 13.3 points per game, scored five points in only 18 minutes during his first game back. He said his knee is “70, 80 percent” healthy, but he’s eager for it to fully recover.

“Our defense was awful today,” Hachimura said. “We weren’t locked in, and our game plans, we didn’t execute. They were getting everything — 3s, transition, layups, whatever. I think we’ve just got to focus on defense. Our offense is going to be fine. We know that.”

Los Angeles lost to Milwaukee on Thursday without Doncic and Austin Reaves, who were also out, leaving the Lakers without four usual starters as they played their sixth game in eight days. Doncic and Reaves combined for 59 points against Chicago, but their teammates couldn’t keep up.

“We just haven’t had a lot of time with our full team available,” Redick said. “We’ve had to manage this all season long, no matter which version of this team it’s been. So I’m excited for these last 13 games to build some continuity, build some chemistry, and hopefully the way we were playing before the Boston game, we can kind of get back to that.”

Luka Doncic Leads Lakers Past Clippers as Winning Streak Extends to Six Games

The Los Angeles Lakers continued their strong form with a 108-102 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, led by Luka Doncic’s impressive performance. Doncic, who scored 29 points, also contributed six rebounds and nine assists, helping the Lakers secure their sixth consecutive win.

Doncic Shines for Lakers as Victory Pushes Them to Second Place

Since joining the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks in a recent three-way trade, Doncic has consistently been a key player, scoring at least 20 points in four of the past five games. LeBron James also played a crucial role, scoring 17 points and providing nine assists, while rookie Dalton Knecht added 19 points off the bench at Crypto.com Arena.

Despite a standout performance from Kawhi Leonard, who scored a season-high 33 points, the Clippers struggled and suffered their fifth loss in the past six games. The Lakers’ victory propelled them to second place in the Western Conference standings, while the Clippers remained in sixth, just clinging to a playoff spot. The Lakers’ recent success indicates a significant improvement in their form, strengthening their position as a strong contender in the conference.

Thunder’s Victory Marred by Ejections, Cavaliers and Celtics Secure Crucial Wins

Elsewhere in the Western Conference, a dramatic game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs saw three players ejected after a third-quarter melee. San Antonio’s Julian Champagnie and Oklahoma City’s Kenrich Williams and Luguentz Dort were sent off following the altercation. Despite the controversy, the Thunder secured a high-scoring 146-132 victory, with Jalen Williams delivering a career-high 41 points to extend their winning streak to three games.

In the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers secured a 133-129 overtime victory against the Portland Trail Blazers, with De’Andre Hunter scoring 32 points, including a crucial three-pointer in the final seconds. Meanwhile, the second-placed Boston Celtics bounced back from a losing streak to defeat the Denver Nuggets 110-103 at home, claiming their first win in three games. The results highlight the competitiveness of both conferences as teams continue their push toward the playoffs.

Luka Doncic Delivers Breakout Performance as Lakers Dominate Nuggets in Statement Win

The Los Angeles Lakers’ trade for Luka Doncic earlier this month is beginning to show its potential, as the 25-year-old superstar had his most impressive performance since joining the team. After a slow start in his first three games with the Lakers, averaging just 14.7 points per game, Doncic exploded in a 123-100 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

In this game, he tallied 32 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals, leading the Lakers to snap the Nuggets’ nine-game winning streak. Doncic expressed relief after the game, saying he finally felt like himself again.

Doncic and James Shine Together, Leading Lakers’ Offensive Power and Defensive Dominance

Luka Doncic’s strong performance was complemented by LeBron James, who contributed 25 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. The two stars displayed excellent on-court chemistry, especially during fastbreak opportunities where James benefited from Doncic’s precise passes. James humorously compared their connection to a “wide receiver” and a “quarterback.” While the duo’s chemistry is still evolving, Doncic acknowledged that it was improving with each game, signaling a promising future for their partnership.

In addition to their offensive dominance, the Lakers excelled on defense, holding the Nuggets to only nine turnovers while forcing 15 steals compared to Denver’s six. Despite reigning MVP Nikola Jokic achieving his 26th triple-double of the season, the Lakers’ defense effectively contained him. Jokic struggled with just two made shots out of seven attempts and committed six turnovers. This defensive performance was crucial to the Lakers’ victory, and the team seemed determined to show their ability to compete at a high level.

Doncic’s Passion Fuels Lakers’ Dominant Win, Marking a New Era for Team

Luka Doncic’s fiery passion was evident throughout the game, a trait the Lakers were eager to see after acquiring him. His intense play, including hitting step-back three-pointers and celebrating with loud screams, helped lift the Lakers.

Lakers head coach J.J. Reddick had specifically requested to see this side of Doncic, and the player delivered, even earning a technical foul for arguing a non-call. This emotional intensity not only fueled his performance but also provided the Lakers with the energy they needed to dominate the game.

The Lakers’ win over the Nuggets is a significant one, particularly after the Nuggets eliminated them in the first round of the playoffs in the last two seasons. The victory on the road, in Denver, for the first time since April 2022, proves the Lakers’ potential to make a deep playoff run. Although the Nuggets were unable to maintain their winning streak, they remain confident, with Jamal Murray downplaying the loss. For the Lakers, however, the win represents a new chapter, with Doncic and James leading them to greater heights.

LeBron James: Pursuing Legacy in His 20th Year

LeBron James has spent nearly two decades as one of the greatest athletes in professional sports, with an illustrious career that continues to defy age. As he enters his 20th season in the NBA, LeBron’s journey is far from a conventional one.

Most athletes, even those who reach Hall of Fame levels, don’t extend their careers for this long. James, however, seems to be writing his own script, as he continues to play at an elite level while chasing greatness beyond what even the most dedicated NBA fans could have imagined.

The 2023-2024 NBA season marks the 20th season of LeBron’s career, and it’s evident that he’s no longer the young prodigy who entered the league as the first overall pick in 2003. He has gone through his own evolution, from being a budding superstar in Cleveland to an international icon with championships and MVPs in Miami and Los Angeles.

LeBron’s play, however, continues to defy the aging curve in professional basketball. What makes LeBron’s longevity so impressive is the way he has evolved his game as he ages. While he once relied heavily on explosive athleticism and remarkable physical gifts to dominate the court, he’s adapted to the wear and tear that naturally comes with age.

Now, LeBron is known for his basketball IQ, versatility, and leadership. He’s become more selective with his moments of aggression, knowing that efficiency is critical to his longevity.

LeBron’s 20th season has been no different. As of the early stages of this season, his scoring average remains impressive, and he’s still putting up a level of production that would be expected from much younger players. In fact, he’s managed to maintain his elite status, often being the catalyst for the Los Angeles Lakers’ success. His playmaking remains a key asset for the Lakers, as he’s consistently among the league’s leaders in assists.

LeBron James
LeBron James (NBA)

Is his career winding down?

The idea that he can keep this up indefinitely seems unlikely. And while his talent and conditioning allow him to perform at a high level in year 20, questions about his retirement or future seasons linger as his body continues to age. However, for now, LeBron shows no signs of slowing down.

One of the most fascinating aspects of LeBron’s sustained greatness has been his ability to compete at an elite level without the aid of a consistently dominant supporting cast. While he has had star teammates over the years—whether it was Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami or Anthony Davis in Los Angeles—James has often carried teams on his back.

Even in the absence of another clear superstar, LeBron has found ways to pump the play of those around him, showcasing his leadership qualities and court vision in ways that few others can replicate. The Lakers have witnessed this time and time again as he continues to make everyone around him better.

In year 20, LeBron is, as always, driven by more than just individual accolades. His relentless pursuit of greatness can be traced to his desire to solidify his legacy as one of the greatest players in basketball history. That ambition has kept him in championship contention year after year, pushing him to keep striving for that next win, that next record, that next title.

As of this season, the list of LeBron’s accomplishments is staggering. He is a four-time NBA champion, a four-time MVP, and a 19-time NBA All-Star. LeBron holds the all-time record for points scored in NBA history and continues to add to that tally with every game.

The remarkable consistency with which he has played has allowed him to remain an elite player far longer than most thought possible.

Yet, even after all that he has achieved, LeBron is not done. The hunger for success that fueled him at the start of his career still burns brightly. Despite being 38 years old, he continues to defy the expectations placed on athletes his age.

LeBron James and Bronny James warm up before the game

LeBron and Bronny James are playing on the same team

In 2023, he even expressed his goal of playing with his son, Bronny James, in the NBA, which further emphasizes his desire to extend his career beyond the average player’s shelf life. While this goal may seem ambitious, if anyone can achieve it, it’s LeBron James.

The Lakers, as the team LeBron now leads, are embracing his leadership and skillset with open arms. Despite his age, LeBron is still regarded as one of the top players in the league. His ability to change the game with his presence, both offensively and defensively, continues to make him a force to be reckoned with.

Whether it’s his ability to find teammates with pinpoint accuracy or score efficiently in clutch moments, his impact on the court remains profound.

While it’s clear that father time catches up with every athlete eventually, LeBron’s ability to perform at an elite level in year 20 speaks volumes about his commitment to his craft.

He has managed to balance his on-court performance with his off-court endeavors, including his philanthropy, business ventures, and role as an advocate for social change. These elements of his legacy set him apart, showing that he is much more than just a basketball player.

As the Lakers continue their quest for another championship with LeBron still at the helm, the sports world watches in awe. At 38, his drive to succeed hasn’t dulled, and his determination to leave his mark on the league and his family continues to fuel his pursuits.

His drive is a testament to his character, and it’s a story that will undoubtedly continue to be told long after he’s retired from the court.

LeBron James is undeniably chasing greatness in year 20, and based on his performance thus far, it’s safe to say he’ll continue to do so for as long as he can. The chase may eventually come to a close, but LeBron’s legacy will forever remain a blueprint for greatness.

Whether or not his pursuit of additional championships leads him to another title or not, LeBron’s influence on the game of basketball and his ability to defy expectations is undeniable.

Three-Peat in Sports: The Meaning, History, and the Pat Riley Connection

In the world of sports, achieving back-to-back championships is impressive, but winning three consecutive titles? That’s a different level of dominance.

A “three-peat” refers to a team or athlete winning three consecutive championships in a specific league or competition.

This feat is rare, as it requires sustained excellence, mental resilience, and the ability to outlast fierce competition year after year.

The Origin of the Term “Three-Peat”

The term “three-peat” became widely recognized in the late 1980s, thanks to Pat Riley, the legendary basketball coach. While coaching the Los Angeles Lakers, Riley foresaw his team’s potential to win three straight NBA championships.

To capitalize on this, he trademarked the term “three-peat” in 1988. Although the Lakers fell short of achieving this goal, the term gained popularity when the Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, secured three consecutive NBA titles in the early 1990s.

Why a Three-Peat Is So Difficult

Winning a championship is already an immense challenge, but sustaining that success over three years is even harder. Several factors contribute to the difficulty of a three-peat:

  • Increased Pressure: Defending champions often have a target on their backs, making every game tougher.
  • Player Fatigue & Injuries: Long seasons take a physical toll, and key players may suffer from injuries.
  • Rival Teams’ Adjustments: Opponents study and adapt their strategies to dethrone the reigning champions.
  • Team Changes: Free agency, retirements, and coaching adjustments can disrupt team chemistry.
Los Angeles Lakers (2002)

Memorable Three-Peats in Sports History

Though rare, some teams have etched their names in history with incredible three-peat performances:

  • Chicago Bulls (1991-1993, 1996-1998, NBA) – Michael Jordan and the Bulls dominated the league with two separate three-peats.
  • New York Yankees (1998-2000, MLB) – One of baseball’s most dominant teams, the Yankees captured three straight World Series titles.
  • Los Angeles Lakers (2000-2002, NBA) – Led by Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, the Lakers continued the tradition of three-peats.
  • UCLA Bruins (1967-1973, NCAA Basketball) – Under John Wooden, UCLA achieved a staggering seven-peat, redefining dominance.

Beyond Basketball: The Impact of the Three-Peat

The term “three-peat” has transcended basketball and is now used in various sports, from soccer to tennis. It symbolizes greatness, endurance, and a team’s ability to overcome adversity repeatedly. More than just a statistic, a three-peat cements a team’s legacy in sports history.

A three-peat is more than just winning three championships in a row—it’s a mark of dominance, determination, and resilience. Thanks to Pat Riley’s foresight, the phrase has become a legendary part of sports culture, forever linked to the greatest dynasties in history.

In Los Angeles, Bronny James played the entire 4th quarter as the Lakers secured a dominant win

Even on the road, Bronny James became a fan favorite in Washington.

Fans cheered for LeBron James’ son throughout the game, and with the Los Angeles Lakers well ahead of the Wizards on Thursday night, Bronny played the entire fourth quarter in his team’s 134-96 victory.

Bronny James scored a career-high five points. Although he shot 1 of 6 from the field, he made a driving layup while being fouled and completed the three-point play with a free throw.

“He did a lot of really good things tonight. I thought he made a couple really nice passes,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “Defensively he was great. It’s building blocks for every young player, and I think tonight was a good, positive building block for him.”

Bronny James jumps for a shot in the 2nd half

Bronny’s game included an air ball from 3-point range, two rebounds, two assists, and two fouls. He had a steal and made a nice long pass to Dalton Knecht for a dunk. After his only field goal, he drove to the basket again and lobbed an alley-oop to Christian Koloko for another dunk.

He wrapped up the game with two free throws in the final seconds and was greeted with an “MVP! MVP!” chant from the crowd.

“He’s had eyeballs on him his whole life. He’s used to it,” Redick said. “I remember not playing a lot my rookie year and second year. The Orlando fans would sometimes chant that in a blowout in the fourth quarter — ‘We want JJ’ — and it’s a weird feeling. There’s that audible sort of anticipation every time you shoot the ball. It’s a lot.

“He has handled everything with dignity, grace, class, all that stuff. He’ll continue to grow.”

LeBron and Davis Face Crucial Trade Deadline to Secure Lakers’ Championship Window

As the trade deadline approaches, LeBron James stands at a critical point in his illustrious career. At 40 years old, his time in the NBA is more limited, and his window to chase another championship is narrowing. LeBron has spent over two decades ensuring his teams are competitive, pushing organizations to build championship-caliber rosters. However, this season, his timeline has become more focused on the present, as next year is uncertain. His ability to fend off Father Time may not last forever, and the idea of a future title chase is no longer a guarantee.

LeBron has jokingly stated that he could play for five more seasons, but the reality is his career is now very much focused on each season as it comes. For the first time, looking too far ahead could be irresponsible. This shift in perspective has highlighted the importance of the Lakers’ moves this season. With LeBron’s age, the urgency to improve the team for a potential title run is undeniable, but the question is how the Lakers will act to strengthen the roster in his favor.

Anthony Davis and Lebron James
Anthony Davis and Lebron James (NBA)

The Role of Anthony Davis in the Lakers’ Future

While LeBron’s age makes him the focal point of the Lakers’ pursuit of a championship, Anthony Davis’ role in team building is equally critical. Davis is aware of what it takes to win a championship and understands the difference between good and great teammates. His partnership with LeBron, which led to an NBA title, showcases their synergy. Furthermore, their bond was reinforced with a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, where LeBron earned MVP honors, proving his continued excellence.

From Davis’ perspective, the current Lakers roster falls short of the level necessary for a championship contender. Despite good players surrounding them, the team lacks the star power and depth to compete with the league’s top teams. Davis knows that elite duos like those in Boston (Tatum and Brown), Dallas (Luka and Kyrie), and Phoenix (Durant and Booker) have built strong foundations. However, the Lakers’ duo of LeBron and Davis stands among the best in the league and may be the best chance for a title right now.

Looking at the broader league, Davis recognizes that pairing with LeBron gives him a unique opportunity. While other teams have star duos, few can match the level of both LeBron and Davis. Davis’ trust in LeBron, developed over their championship run, plays a significant role in the Lakers’ success. Given the parity in the NBA and the difficulty of forming such high-caliber duos, Davis must understand that this partnership may be the most promising avenue for a title in the immediate future.

Assessing the Lakers’ Window of Opportunity

For Davis, the question becomes whether this current moment represents his best chance to win. Even if a new superstar could join the Lakers in the future, the time required to develop chemistry and build a strong roster may make that a long-term process. The Lakers’ current window with LeBron, despite his age, remains wide open due to the trust, experience, and history between the two superstars. Team-building efforts will not be more favorable than they are now.

With both LeBron and Davis at crucial stages of their careers, the Lakers cannot afford to waste this opportunity. The trade deadline presents a chance to bolster the roster and ensure that both stars have the supporting cast necessary to make a legitimate title run. While LeBron’s age is a factor, it is also Davis’ timeline that should guide the Lakers’ decision-making. This could be one of the last chances for the Lakers to build a championship team around both of them.

Ultimately, the decision-makers for the Lakers, including Rob Pelinka, must recognize that the window is open now. This is not just for LeBron’s sake but also for Anthony Davis, who is approaching his 32nd birthday. Davis, despite being in his prime, may not find a better opportunity to win a title with the current roster and his current teammate. This trade deadline represents a crucial moment to go all in, ensuring that both LeBron and Davis have the support they need to chase one more championship together.

Lakers aim to cut down turnovers in matchup against struggling Wizards in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Lakers, without their star Anthony Davis, will travel to Washington to face the struggling Wizards on Thursday.

The Lakers saw their four-game winning streak end on Tuesday with a 118-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Davis left the game in the first half with an abdominal strain and will be out for at least a week.

Before Tuesday’s game, Davis had been averaging 32.8 points and 15 rebounds in the previous four games, including a 42-point, 23-rebound performance in a win over the Charlotte Hornets.

Los Angeles shot 51.4 percent from the field in the loss but had 22 turnovers on the second night of a back-to-back.

“I’m not sure where our collective brains were at, but I understand the physical fatigue,” said Lakers head coach JJ Redick. “We were a step slow all night. We had bad decision making, poor execution, we were very unorganized throughout the game. You have to look at the big picture, which is that we’re heading in the right direction.”

LeBron James led the Lakers with 31 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. James is averaging 23.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and a team-high nine assists per game, behind Davis’ 25.7 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.

The Wizards are having another rough season, following up their worst season in franchise history with a 15-game losing streak. They lost to the Lakers 111-88 on Jan. 21.

Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls

Washington lost 106-82 to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. The Wizards struggled, making only 5 of 30 3-point attempts and committing 27 turnovers.

Jordan Poole, a bright spot for Washington this season, struggled in the loss, scoring only three points on 1-for-9 shooting. Poole is averaging a career-high 20.7 points per game this season.

“You’re going to have tough nights, give credit to Toronto where it’s due,” said Wizards head coach Brian Keefe. “They took him out of his rhythm. Jordan will bounce back. He always does.”

Kyle Kuzma had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss, his third double-double of the season and second in the last three games.

The Wizards fell behind 14-0 to start the game, a pattern that has continued throughout their losing streak.

“Starts — we got to be better at for sure,” Keefe said. “That was the tale of this game. … They put their hands on us. They were more physical with us. … We got to start better. That’s something we got to get better at and address right away.”

Kuzma is averaging 14.5 points per game, while Bilal Coulibaly adds 12.3 points. The Wizards have not beaten the Lakers since March 2022, losing five straight in the series.

Hornets Look To Keep Momentum Going As Lakers Visit Charlotte

The Charlotte Hornets are eager to keep their momentum going, and much of their success depends on the players available for the game.

A nearly full roster will be crucial when the Hornets host the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night.

“There’s a lot of talk about just trying to keep our foot on the gas and not let up,” said Hornets coach Charles Lee.

The Lakers are coming off a 118-108 win against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday and are on a three-game winning streak, their first in a month. The Hornets have won four of their last six games.

Charlotte recently saw some changes in its roster, with Miles Bridges, LaMelo Ball, and Seth Curry all returning for Saturday’s 123-92 win against the New Orleans Pelicans, after missing a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers the night before due to injuries.

Center Mark Williams missed the Pelicans game because of foot soreness.

While things are looking positive, there’s no certainty about what the injury report will say heading into Monday’s game.

Ball, the team’s leading scorer with 28.9 points per game, has been Charlotte’s top scorer in six of their past nine games, even though he missed one of those games. His impact is huge when he’s on the court.

“We have asked him to play a little bit faster,” Lee said. “Try to play with more pace. Our attack guy needs to be more aggressive to try to flatten the defense and put us in more advantage situations and he has flourished in that environment.”

Anthony Davis leads the Lakers with 25.9 points and 11.9 rebounds. He played one of his best games of the season on Saturday against the Warriors, scoring 36 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Davis and LeBron James (23.7 points, 9.0 assists) are the main stars for the Lakers, but the team relies on other players as well. Jared Vanderbilt, who was dealing with a knee injury, made his season debut on Saturday. He contributed four rebounds, two points, and two assists in 12 minutes.

“Vando was awesome, did all the things that we need him to do,” said Lakers coach JJ Redick. “I have a strong sense that he has been sandbagging over the last three weeks (at practice) just in terms of his intensity level… We have not seen that in the gym, and it looked like the Vando that we know.”

Vanderbilt’s energy will be helpful in away games.

“He plays hard every single possession,” said teammate Austin Reaves. “He’s going to give us second-chance opportunities. We’re going to get more steals with him out there because he’s so active.”

The Lakers ended a three-game road losing streak on Saturday. The game in Charlotte is the start of a stretch of four games in six nights on the East Coast.

Charlotte has gone 1-1 so far on a nine-game homestand that continues until February 7. The easy victory over New Orleans on Saturday was a rare chance for the team to dominate from start to finish.

“Our intensity level, our focus, didn’t waver,” Lee said.

Without Williams, the Hornets got strong contributions from Moussa Diabate, who grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench. It also gave DaQuan Jeffries an opportunity to play 27 minutes, scoring six points and grabbing seven rebounds.

The Hornets tied a franchise record by having nine players hit at least one 3-pointer. They made 21 total 3-pointers, shooting 42% from beyond the arc.

“We just put the work in,” Bridges said. “Everybody is playing with confidence. As long as we do that, we’ll give ourselves a chance every day.”

Los Angeles led by as many as 28 points and was close to their biggest win margin for the second straight game until Boston’s Jaden Springer hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
