DeMarcus Cousins, in Los Angeles, thinks Giannis Antetokounmpo’s recent comments suggest he may leave Milwaukee soon

In his recent appearance on the “Run it back” show, DeMarcus Cousins talked about Giannis Antetokounmpo and why he thinks Giannis might be the next star to either get traded or ask to leave his current team, the Milwaukee Bucks. Cousins made this guess based on some recent comments Giannis made, where he hinted that superstars have the right to make their own choices in the league.

“As his teammate, I learned that there’s always truth in his humor. If the Bucks don’t work out, I could absolutely see him in Chicago,” Cousins said. “It makes sense. It’s great for business. The league is trying to globalize the game, and it all makes sense. It all goes together,” Cousins added.

Cousins believes it’s only a matter of time before this happens

Cousins’ opinion about Giannis’ comments is worth considering since he’s one of the few veterans who has spent time with Giannis in recent years. Even though nothing about Giannis’ future is certain, the four-time All-Star thinks his current situation might eventually push him to leave—especially if things don’t improve.

“If this experiment with Damien Lillard doesn’t go as planned, it’s obvious that he was ready to move from Milwaukee once before. Before they won that championship. So, obviously, he can get to a place where he’s ready to move on.

So if this thing doesn’t work out, I could see that definitely being another situation. Him being in a Chicago-type situation, absolutely. It’s right down the street. He’s comfortable in the Midwest, and obviously, Chicago is a great market for any superstar,” Cousins added.

Right now, Giannis is playing for a Bucks team that isn’t doing great (27-22) and is ranked fifth in the Eastern Conference. While Giannis is an incredible player and Milwaukee always has a chance to win a championship with him, the big question is how they can give him the best chance to succeed.

This season, the eight-time All-Star is averaging a career-high 31.8 points per game, 12.2 rebounds, and 5.9 assists. Cousins thinks that if Giannis keeps playing at this high level on a team that doesn’t seem to have a strong shot at winning the championship, he might lose patience and want to leave.

What Antetokounmpo said

In addition to suggesting that superstars have the right to make their own decisions in the league, the international star also talked about why it’s important for non-American players to play for big market teams — especially if it helps grow the game and build their personal brand. This is why Giannis said it’s his dream to see European players join big market teams.

“Now that a European will be, I believe, the face of the Lakers, this is something new for Europe. It’s never happened before. We had Pau Gasol. Obviously, he was a great player. And how do you say — Vujacic? Sasha Vujacic? — great guy, one of my close friends, but I mess up his name all the time. Now, I just love it. You know what I want? I want Luka to the Lakers, I want Jokic to the Knicks.

I want all the Europeans to go to all the big markets to see something incredible. This is what I want. This is my dream. But again, I wish both teams the best of luck, wish all the players best of luck with their journey moving forward,” Antetokounmpo said.

It’s unclear whether Antetokounmpo said this as a passive-aggressive message to the Bucks or if he truly just wanted to share that his dream is to see Europeans playing for big market teams in the NBA. No one knows for sure.

However, when someone like Cousins — who has been in the league long enough to understand what the “Greek Freak” is doing — says there’s truth to Giannis’ words, it could mean that the 30-year-old superstar might be onto something. Only time will tell.

The Bucks are trading Khris Middleton to the Wizards and acquiring Kyle Kuzma in Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Bucks are trading NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards and bringing Kyle Kuzma back in return, a person with knowledge of the deal.

The trade also involves A.J. Johnson moving from the Bucks to the Wizards and Patrick Baldwin going from the Wizards to the Bucks, along with a future pick swap and some second-round draft picks, according to the person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity as the trade still needs league approval.

The deal, first reported by ESPN, comes one day before the Thursday 3 p.m. Eastern trade deadline.

Middleton, 33, has had injury problems and leaves the Bucks after spending all but one of his 13 NBA seasons in Milwaukee. The three-time All-Star has played only 23 games this season, 16 of which were off the bench, but he was shooting a career-high 51% in those games.

Middleton helped the Bucks win the NBA title in 2021 and played for Team USA to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics later that year. He has been praised by Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo for years.

“It’s definitely a plus having Khris back,” Antetokounmpo said earlier this season when Middleton returned after ankle issues. “Man, he takes us to the next level with his IQ, decision-making, shot ability, defense.”

Kuzma, 29, will be joining his third team, having played four years with the Los Angeles Lakers and parts of four years with the Wizards. He has averaged 17.2 points per game for his career, including 15.2 points per game this season.

The trade gives the Bucks some financial flexibility by getting them below the second apron, which might allow them more trade options before the deadline.

Being over the second apron had limited the Bucks’ ability to make moves as they worked to improve their aging roster. The Bucks (26-22) are currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in the last two seasons.

In the trade, they sent away a player whose No. 22 jersey might one day hang in the Fiserv Forum rafters.

Middleton holds the franchise record for career 3-pointers with 1,382. He scored 12,586 points for Milwaukee, ranking him third in team history, behind Antetokounmpo and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

He is second in team history in games played (735) and minutes played (23,039), behind Antetokounmpo, and third in assists (2,990).

Middleton averaged 24 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game during the 2021 NBA Finals when the Bucks defeated Phoenix in six games. He has averaged 20.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in 80 career playoff games with Milwaukee. Middleton was selected to the All-Star Game in 2019, 2020, and 2022.

However, injuries have limited his play in recent seasons.

He missed the Bucks’ seven-game loss to Boston in the 2022 Eastern Conference semifinals and played just 33 games in 2022-23 and 55 games in 2023-24. Middleton didn’t make his 2024-25 debut until December 6 as he recovered from offseason ankle surgery. He went scoreless in two games in late January.

Kuzma has also struggled this season, shooting 42% from the field, 28.1% on 3-point attempts, and 60.2% on free throws, all career lows. However, he scored 31 and 22 points in his last two games.

The Bucks selected Johnson with the 23rd overall pick in the 2024 draft. The 20-year-old guard averaged 2.9 points in seven games with Milwaukee.

Baldwin, a 22-year-old forward who went to high school in the Milwaukee area and played one season of college basketball at Milwaukee, was the 28th overall pick in the 2022 draft. He averaged 2.1 points and 4.6 minutes in 22 games this season.

The Grizzlies defeated the Bucks for the seventh consecutive time in Memphis

Jaren Jackson Jr. hit seven 3-pointers and scored 37 points, while Desmond Bane added 22 as the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Milwaukee Bucks 132-119 on Sunday night.

This win marked the Grizzlies’ seventh straight victory over the Bucks and their eighth win in the last nine matchups. Santi Aldama contributed 23 points and eight rebounds, and Ja Morant (shoulder) missed his second game in a row.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Khris Middleton scored 20 points off the bench, while Damian Lillard added 15 points, although he struggled with his shooting, going 4-for-15 from the field.

The Bucks have now lost four of their last five games, a stretch that began after a 1-3 road trip. Before this, Milwaukee had won eight of their previous nine games.

The game was competitive from the start, with 10 lead changes in the first quarter. Memphis took a 31-28 lead at the end of the opening period. Middleton led the Bucks early, scoring 11 points in the first quarter and 13 by halftime.

Memphis went on an 11-0 run in the second to take an eight-point lead, but the Bucks fought back and regained a 58-56 lead at the break.

Milwaukee came out strong in the third, with Brook Lopez hitting two 3-pointers and Taurean Prince adding another to give the Bucks an eight-point lead. Antetokounmpo’s dunk put them up by 10 with 9:37 left in the third. AJ Green hit a 35-foot running 3-pointer at the end of the quarter, giving the Bucks a 99-93 lead heading into the fourth.

Memphis opened the fourth quarter with a 12-4 run, taking a 105-103 lead. With the game tied at 112, the Grizzlies scored seven unanswered points and never trailed again. Jackson scored 16 points in the final quarter, including three 3-pointers, while Aldama added 11 points in the period.

The Bucks take on the Thunder in Milwaukee, aiming to end their losing streak in a rematch of the NBA Cup final

The last time the Milwaukee Bucks and Oklahoma City Thunder played, the game didn’t count in the NBA regular season standings. However, it was still significant, as the Bucks won 97-81 on Dec. 17 in the NBA Cup championship game in Las Vegas.

On Monday night in Oklahoma City, the teams will meet again for the first time since that match.

In their previous game, Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with 26 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists. Andre Jackson Jr. also played a key role defensively, limiting Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to 21 points on 8-of-24 shooting.

Gilgeous-Alexander has scored 21 points or fewer only twice this season.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said that Jackson’s defense forced them to move Gilgeous-Alexander off the ball to conserve energy. “Rather than having him go get the ball in the backcourt and exert a lot of effort to get the ball and get the ball over half court, we move him off the ball,” Daigneault explained.

“It’s an attack we’ve seen with Dillon Brooks. It’s an attack we’ve seen with Herb Jones. There’s multiple ways to play him, and we’ve got solutions built in.”

Jackson welcomed the challenge, saying, “I’m not afraid to step up to the plate against anybody just cause that’s my role and that’s who I’ve had to always be in order to make it this far. That’s what’s going to continue to take me further is I’m not afraid of any competition, any matchup.”

Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz

The Thunder are coming off a 144-110 win over Sacramento on Saturday, starting a four-game homestand. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 29 points in just three quarters, but the standout performer was Aaron Wiggins, who scored a career-high 41 points.

Since their NBA Cup loss to Milwaukee, the Thunder have gone 18-4, cementing their spot at the top of the Western Conference.

Milwaukee had hoped that their NBA Cup win would mark a turning point after a rough start to the season, but that hasn’t happened. Following a 132-119 loss to Memphis on Sunday, the Bucks have gone 12-10 since their win over the Thunder. They’ve lost three straight games and four of their last five. During their three-game losing streak, the Bucks have allowed an average of 133.7 points per game.

Oklahoma City could be missing some players again on Monday. Jalen Williams, recently named to his first All-Star team, is listed as questionable with a right wrist sprain after sitting out Saturday’s game.

Cason Wallace (right shoulder strain) and Alex Caruso (left ankle sprain) are also listed as questionable. Caruso missed the win over Sacramento, while Wallace injured his shoulder early in that game and did not return.

For Milwaukee, Bobby Portis, who has been the subject of trade rumors ahead of Thursday’s deadline, missed his fifth consecutive game on Sunday due to personal reasons. Bucks coach Doc Rivers said he wasn’t sure if Portis would play in Oklahoma City.

Victor Wembanyama shines as Spurs defeat Bucks in San Antonio

Victor Wembanyama scored 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 144-118 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday, ending a four-game home losing streak.

Wembanyama stood firm against Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, matching him physically when Antetokounmpo tried to push him around in the fourth quarter.

The Spurs had a 14-point lead going into the final period, and they extended it to 22 with 7:08 left to play, making it easier for Wembanyama to hold his ground.

Keldon Johnson added 24 points for San Antonio, which won just their second game in the last seven. Stephon Castle scored 20 points, Harrison Barnes had 16, and Devin Vassell and Chris Paul each scored 12 points in the win.

Antetokounmpo led all scorers with 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Damian Lillard contributed 22 points, Khris Middleton scored 21, and Taurean Prince added 13 points for the Bucks.

The Spurs led by as many as 11 points in the first quarter, but the Bucks came back thanks to Middleton’s 10 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game 35-35 at the end of the first.

The second quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with the Bucks taking a five-point lead when Middleton hit a jumper with 1:30 left. Wembanyama answered with a three-pointer, and Castle made a free throw to pull the Spurs to within 71-70 at halftime.

Before the break, Antetokounmpo led all players with 21 points and nine rebounds, with Middleton and Lillard adding 14 points each. Johnson led the Spurs with 20 points off the bench, and Wembanyama had 12 points.

San Antonio took the lead early in the third quarter, and after Castle hit a three-pointer, the Spurs led 81-79 at the 9:27 mark. They expanded the lead to 100-89 after two free throws by Castle with 4:15 left and reached a game-high 17-point lead when Wembanyama hit a one-legged three-pointer with 1:23 remaining.

Catcher William Contreras and the Milwaukee Brewers reached a $6.1 million agreement, avoiding arbitration in Milwaukee

Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras agreed to a one-year contract worth $6.1 million on Friday, avoiding an arbitration hearing.

Contreras will receive a $6 million salary this year, and the Brewers have a $12 million option for 2026 with a $100,000 buyout.

A two-time All-Star, Contreras had requested $6.5 million and was offered $5.6 million when the figures were exchanged.

His contract includes a team option for 2026.

Contreras, 27, hit .281 with a .365 on-base percentage, 23 home runs, and 92 RBIs in 155 games last season. He was an All-Star for the second time in three years. In 2023, he batted .289 with a .367 on-base percentage, 17 homers, and 78 RBIs in 141 games.

Contreras was named the Brewers’ most valuable player by the Milwaukee chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in each of the last two seasons. The Brewers traded for him from the Atlanta Braves after the 2022 season.
