After snapping a five-game losing streak, the Rangers set their sights on their rivals, the Devils

The New York Rangers looked different on Saturday, and even though they made it tough on themselves in the third period, they ended their five-game losing streak with a big win.

After a tough season and their first win in 11 days, the Rangers hope to start a winning streak on Monday when they play against the New Jersey Devils.

During their five-game losing streak, which was their first since the end of the 2020-21 season, the Rangers were outscored 21-10. This stretch was marked by few power plays, slow starts, and a lack of physical play.

In their 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, the Rangers started a five-game homestand and matched a season-high with three power-play goals, including the game-winner by Kaapo Kakko with 24 seconds left on a four-minute man advantage. New York also led after the first period for the first time since November 9 in Detroit. They had 17 penalty minutes in the game, their second-most this season.

The penalty minutes showed a different attitude from the Rangers, as struggling defenseman Jacob Trouba fought Josh Anderson 1:58 into the game, and there was a big fight late in the second period.

Artemi Panarin scored a power-play goal in the first period and assisted Mika Zibanejad’s goal late in the second period.

“Sometimes when you’re trying to get out of something, that first one you get out of might not be the prettiest, and it wasn’t,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said.

“But we’ve got to draw on the positives of what we were able to do from the physicality and the start, the fact that we kicked it up, and we came back and won it. The specialty teams factor into it. I think you just pull all those things out of it and you continue to work your way out.”

The Devils had a one-point lead over the Rangers after New York’s 4-3 win in Vancouver on November 19. Now, the Devils are ahead by seven points, though they’ve played four more games.

New Jersey has gone 11-5-0 in the 16 games since they lost four straight from October 19-25. During that stretch, the Devils were shut out four times and played five one-goal games.

Recently, New Jersey played two high-scoring, one-goal games against the Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals. After a 5-4 win in Detroit on Friday, the Devils lost 6-5 to the Capitals on Saturday. They gave up a season-high three power-play goals in the last 10 minutes of the second period.

The Devils allowed four power-play goals on nine chances over the two games, and opponents have scored 7 goals on 24 chances in their past seven games. The struggles against the Capitals happened before Stefan Noesen scored two power-play goals in the third period.

Nico Hischier and Justin Dowling scored, and Jesper Bratt added a tying goal before the Devils gave up two goals in 10 seconds, losing the lead.

“We take a lot of pride in our penalty kill and tonight it arguably cost us the game,” Brett Pesce said. “So, just learn from it and we’ve got a big (game) Monday. And hopefully we can bounce back.”

The Rangers outscored the Devils 17-8 in all four meetings last season. The last game on April 3 saw a combined 166 penalty minutes after a line brawl just two seconds into the game.

Capitals fend off Devils’ comeback attempt in the third period

Taylor Raddysh and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored just ten seconds apart late in the third period, helping the Washington Capitals hold off the New Jersey Devils for a 6-5 victory on Saturday night.

Raddysh deflected a pass from Martin Fehervary past Jake Allen from the slot at 13:54, putting the Capitals ahead 5-4. After the faceoff, Aliaksei Protas took the puck from Allen behind the net and passed it in front, where Dubois scored into the empty net, making it 6-4.

Stefan Noesen pulled the Devils back within one goal at 16:45, scoring his second goal of the game to make it 6-5.

Rasmus Sandin, Raddysh, and Dubois each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who have won seven consecutive road games. John Carlson added three assists, and Charlie Lindgren made 22 saves.

Jesper Bratt had a goal and an assist, and Nico Hischier scored his fifth goal in four games for the Devils, who had won four of their last five games. Jack Hughes contributed three assists, and Jake Allen made 26 saves.

In the second period, Justin Dowling gave the Devils a 2-1 lead at 2:38, deflecting Brett Pesce’s shot past Lindgren.

Connor McMichael tied it 2-2 at 9:49 during a 4-on-3 power play. McMichael’s initial shot was saved by Allen, but Dubois sent the rebound back to him, and he scored.

Jakob Chychrun put the Capitals ahead 3-2 with a power-play goal at 10:56, scoring on a high wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

Sandin extended the Capitals’ lead to 4-2 with just 12 seconds left in the period, scoring on a loose puck in front of the crease during another power play.

In the third period, Noesen pulled the Devils within one at 2:03, tipping in a pass from Jack Hughes on the power play.

NHL to hold hearing for Devils’ Timo Meier over cross-checking incident

New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier will have a hearing with the NHL on Tuesday, the day after his cross-check to Zachary L’Heureux caused the Nashville Predators forward to leave the game.

In the third period of the Devils’ 5-2 win in Newark, N.J., Meier tried to poke the puck away from Predators goaltender Juuse Saros at 12:17. L’Heureux took issue with this move, which led Meier to respond by cross-checking him twice—once to his body and then to his face. The second cross-check caused L’Heureux to bleed.

Meier was given a five-minute cross-checking penalty and a game misconduct after the incident. L’Heureux left the game and did not return.

Meier, 28, has earned 15 points (seven goals and eight assists) in 24 games this season.

The Swiss forward has accumulated 397 career points (198 goals and 199 assists) in 565 games with the Sharks and Devils since being drafted by San Jose with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

New Jersey traded for Meier from the Sharks in a multi-player deal on February 26, 2023.

Nico Hischier’s hat trick powers Devils to victory against Predators

Nico Hischier’s natural hat trick in the second period helped the New Jersey Devils defeat the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Monday in Newark, N.J.

This was Hischier’s first-ever hat trick in his eight NHL seasons, and he ended his 10-game goal drought in a big way. Despite the recent slump, Hischier leads New Jersey with 13 goals this season.

Erik Haula and Justin Dowling also scored for the Devils, and Johnathan Kovacevic had two assists. Jacob Markstrom made 19 saves on 21 shots to earn the win.

The Devils have now won three straight games and are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games.

This victory marked New Jersey’s first home win against Nashville since March 3, 2015, breaking an eight-game losing streak against the Predators at home.

Filip Forsberg and Zachary L’Heureux scored for Nashville, who has a 2-3-2 record in their last seven games.

Juuse Saros stopped 26 of 30 shots before being replaced by Scott Wedgewood at the start of the third period. Wedgewood made 15 saves in relief.

Forsberg gave Nashville the lead with their first shot of the game at 5:06 of the first period. Haula tied it for the Devils at 11:29 after a nice passing play.

New Jersey took the lead 3:52 into the second period after Timo Meier passed to Hischier, who raced down the right side and scored, getting past Nashville defender Marc Del Gaizo.

The Devils were 1-for-2 on the power play, while Nashville was 0-for-5. Hischier scored New Jersey’s power-play goal at 10:01 of the second period.

Hischier completed his hat trick with a breakaway goal at 16:57 of the second period, after Stefan Noesen stole the puck at the blue line and passed to him.

L’Heureux scored for Nashville at 7:39 of the third period, but despite having a five-minute power play later in the game, Nashville could not score again after Meier’s major penalty for cross-checking L’Heureux.

Dowling sealed the win for the Devils with an empty-net goal at 17:25 of the third period.
