Rangers Explore Trade Options as Struggles Persist, Kreider and Kakko Among Trade Candidates

As the NHL’s annual holiday trade freeze approaches, the New York Rangers are a team under scrutiny for potential moves. After struggling throughout December, the Rangers traded captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks on December 6 in an attempt to change their fortunes. However, the trade didn’t help, as the Rangers have only won two of their last six games, slipping out of a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The team’s performance has led to speculation about further changes, including whether the Rangers will be active in the trade market.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Rangers are “open for business” following a disheartening 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. It was also revealed that left winger Chris Kreider is available for trade, signaling the team’s willingness to make significant moves. Despite this, Friedman noted that some players, such as goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who was recently re-signed, and several others with no-movement clauses, are off-limits. Nevertheless, the Rangers are considering all options, suggesting that the team is in a state of flux and ready for a reshuffle.

Arthur Staple from The Athletic speculated that Peter Laviolette’s tenure as head coach could come to an end early, though Larry Brooks of the New York Post pointed out that the Rangers’ management has shown little appetite for making a coaching change, having already gone through two coaching changes since 2021. The Hockey News’ Remy Mastey further questioned whether coaching was the real issue, given the team’s continued struggles with physicality and defensive strength despite changes in leadership. In this context, there’s speculation about whether a coaching change would be the right move or if the problems lie elsewhere.

Amidst the uncertainty, there is notable interest in certain Rangers players. 33-year-old Chris Kreider, however, might be a difficult trade asset due to his contract and declining performance. Similarly, defenseman Ryan Lindgren, who is a pending UFA, hasn’t garnered significant trade interest. On the other hand, 23-year-old right winger Kaapo Kakko, who has been playing better than in previous seasons, is drawing attention. Kakko was recently a healthy scratch, sparking rumors that he might be traded, though sources suggest no such move is imminent. There is potential for Kakko to be traded for a draft pick or as part of a package deal.

Despite the trade speculation, experts such as Adam Proteau from The Hockey News believe that simply adding players through trades won’t fix the Rangers’ issues. The larger solution, they argue, must come from within the team itself. For the Rangers to find success, internal development and adjustments to their roster and strategy will be key. The upcoming weeks will likely see further developments as the team navigates its struggles and considers its options both on and off the ice.

Jesper Boqvist’s Two Goals Lead Florida Panthers to 5-3 Win Over Struggling New York Rangers

The Florida Panthers defeated the New York Rangers 5-3 on Monday, with Jesper Boqvist playing a pivotal role by scoring two goals, including the decisive go-ahead goal with 8:22 left in the game. Boqvist’s first goal came after his initial shot was blocked, but he capitalized on the rebound of his brother Adam Boqvist’s shot. The game was especially meaningful for Jesper, as he had numerous family members in attendance, and he shared his excitement about the rare opportunity to play alongside his brother in the NHL.

In addition to Jesper’s two goals, the Panthers received contributions from Eetu Luostarinen, Mackie Samoskevich, and Aleksander Barkov, while Uvis Balinskis added two assists. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves to secure the win. Florida had struggled in their previous two games, both of which were 4-0 shutout losses, but this victory helped them rebound. Head coach Paul Maurice praised Boqvist’s performance and Bobrovsky’s key saves, noting how the two Boqvist goals were especially crucial against a Rangers team fighting to turn their season around.

For the Rangers, it was another disappointing loss, marking their fourth consecutive defeat and seventh in their last eight games. Ryan Lindgren, Filip Chytil, and Chris Kreider each scored for New York, but they couldn’t overcome Florida’s offensive pressure. Goalie Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves, but the Rangers’ performance fell short once again. Coach Peter Laviolette voiced his frustration, acknowledging that despite playing better overall, the team’s inability to finish resulted in another loss.

The game got off to a strong start for the Panthers. Luostarinen opened the scoring early in the first period, redirecting a shot from Gustav Forsling into the net. Samoskevich then extended the lead to 2-0 after a deflection off a shot by Dmitry Kulikov. However, the Rangers responded in the second period with Chytil scoring on a rebound to make it 2-1. Lindgren then tied the game at 2-2, redirecting a shot-pass from Adam Fox past Bobrovsky.

The Panthers quickly regained the lead with Boqvist’s second goal just 38 seconds after Lindgren’s tally. Boqvist was in the right place to score off a rebound following a wraparound attempt by Anton Lundell. In the third period, Kreider tied the game again on a power play, scoring a one-timer to make it 3-3. With the Rangers pressing and pulling their goalie late in the game, the Panthers were able to kill off a penalty and seal the win with an empty-net goal from Barkov at 19:23. Maurice emphasized the importance of the penalty kill and Bobrovsky’s strong performance, concluding that the victory was a great way to close out the year.

Rangers place goalie Igor Shesterkin on IR due to an upper body injury

New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin is being placed on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury, according to someone familiar with the decision.

The person, who spoke to The Associated Press anonymously on Tuesday, confirmed the move had not yet been officially announced. Shesterkin’s injury will keep him out of action as the Rangers struggle with a four-game losing streak.

They have lost seven of their last eight games and 15 of their past 19, which has dropped them from a strong playoff position to last place in the Metropolitan Division, just ahead of the Buffalo Sabres at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Shesterkin, 29, recently signed a $92 million contract extension that runs through the 2032-33 season. So far this season, he has a record of 11-15-1 with a 3.10 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage in 27 games.

Igor Shesterkin makes a save in the 1st period

Last season, the 2022 Vezina Trophy winner posted a 2.58 GAA and .912 save percentage, helping the Rangers win the Presidents’ Trophy for the best regular-season record and reach the Eastern Conference final, where they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champions, Florida.

Shesterkin’s injury follows moves made by Rangers general manager Chris Drury, who traded captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim and winger Kaapo Kakko to Seattle earlier this month, in an effort to improve the team’s performance.

Lightning Dominate Rangers 6-2 with Four Special Teams Goals and Vasilevskiy’s 42 Saves

The Tampa Bay Lightning secured a decisive 6-2 victory over the New York Rangers, powered by four special teams’ goals—two on the power play and two short-handed. Brayden Point netted two goals, and Nikita Kucherov contributed three points, solidifying the Lightning’s eighth win in December. Andrei Vasilevskiy delivered a standout performance, stopping 42 shots, while Igor Shesterkin struggled, conceding five goals on 14 shots. This game also marked Victor Hedman’s 1,083rd appearance in a Lightning uniform, where he added his 25th assist of the season.

The Rangers, coming off a rough loss to New Jersey, started aggressively, reflecting a shoot-first mentality that contrasted with Tampa Bay’s more measured approach. Despite the early onslaught, the Lightning capitalized on their first power-play opportunity with Kucherov scoring just over two minutes into the game. However, the Rangers dominated puck possession in the first period, firing 30 shot attempts compared to the Lightning’s 14.

Artemi Panarin equalized for the Rangers late in the first period with a sharp play, but the Lightning quickly responded with a short-handed goal by Ryan McDonagh. Vasilevskiy’s strong play in net and Tampa Bay’s resilience kept the Rangers from building on their momentum despite their high shot volume. By the end of the period, the game remained closely contested at 2-1.

The Lightning took control in the second period, where their special teams shone brightly. Brayden Point scored his first of two goals early in the period, and a short-handed rush led to another goal, this time by Anthony Cirelli. Point added his second goal on a power play shortly after, forcing Shesterkin out of the game. The Lightning tightened their defense, limiting the Rangers to just eight shots in the period, doubling their own offensive output in the process.

The third period opened with a shorthanded goal by the Rangers’ Vincent Trocheck, but they failed to sustain the pressure despite outshooting the Lightning. Tampa Bay effectively managed the puck and limited New York’s high-danger opportunities. Amid a flurry of penalties, Nick Paul sealed the game with a rebound goal, bringing the score to 6-2. The Lightning’s ability to convert on special teams and maintain defensive discipline was key to their dominant win.

While the Rangers piled on shots, their inability to capitalize highlighted Vasilevskiy’s brilliance and the Lightning’s defensive prowess. Injuries and penalties added to New York’s woes, with Jake Guentzel notably leaving the game early. The Lightning’s commanding performance reinforced their December momentum and showcased their depth and execution in critical moments.

Lightning Dominates Rangers 6-2 with Point, Kucherov’s Contributions and Vasilevskiy’s 42 Saves

The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the New York Rangers 6-2 on Saturday night, powered by Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov, who each registered a goal and two assists. The Lightning extended their strong recent form, having won six of their last seven games. Point’s goal brought his season total to 23, just one behind NHL leader Leon Draisaitl of Edmonton. Anthony Cirelli and Ryan McDonagh each scored short-handed goals, while Jake Guentzel and Nick Paul also found the back of the net. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 42 saves in the victory.

The Rangers, struggling with a 4-14 record in their past 18 games, were unable to recover after a rough second period. Artemi Panarin scored a power-play goal, and Vincent Trocheck added a short-handed goal, but the team’s defense and goaltending faltered. Igor Shesterkin was pulled after allowing five goals on 13 shots in the second period, with Jonathan Quick stepping in but allowing one goal on 12 shots. The Rangers’ troubles were compounded by a lack of offense, as they were outshot 17-6 in the first period and failed to capitalize on key moments.

A pivotal moment came late in the first period when Ryan McDonagh scored a short-handed goal to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead. McDonagh’s goal, which came while the Rangers were on a power play, saw him skate end-to-end and fire a shot through Shesterkin’s legs at 18:11. Despite being outshot in the opening frame, the Lightning took control of the game and pulled away with three goals in the second period, including Point’s 23rd of the season.

On the Rangers’ side, veteran forward Chris Kreider made his return to the lineup after being a healthy scratch in the previous game against New Jersey. Despite his return, the Rangers were unable to turn the tide, and their defense and goaltending issues were a major factor in their loss. The game also marked Shesterkin’s third time being pulled in a game this season, further highlighting the struggles the team has faced.

The win for Tampa Bay saw some franchise milestones, including captain Victor Hedman becoming the franchise leader in games played, surpassing Steven Stamkos with 1,083 games. Cirelli also made history by becoming the fourth Lightning player to record two short-handed points in a single game. The Lightning’s victory marks their 10th game in franchise history with two short-handed goals, the first since March 2020. Looking ahead, the Rangers will face Florida on Monday, while Tampa Bay hosts Montreal on Sunday.

Rangers return from break looking to bounce back, set to face Lightning

The New York Rangers will play their second game of a three-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night. They likely did not travel in the best mood after a difficult stretch before the Christmas break.

Last season’s Eastern Conference runners-up were doing well after a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 19, bringing their record to 12-4-1. Since then, the Rangers have gone into a 4-13-0 slump, with poor performances and an offense that has struggled, dropping them out of playoff contention.

In the past 17 games, all ending in regulation, the Rangers have been outscored 61-35 by their opponents.

In their last game before the break, the Rangers were shut out 5-0 by the Devils in the Hudson River Rivalry. During the game, the Devils showed footage of Rangers fans booing New Jersey’s selection of Jack Hughes in the 2019 draft, which allowed New York to take Kaapo Kakko with the next pick.

Kakko was traded to the Seattle Kraken last week, and the camera showed a smiling Hughes on the Devils’ bench.

Rangers general manager Chris Drury said after trading captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 7, “I’m not opposed to making more changes…But big picture, the team has been through a lot the last couple of weeks. We’d like to let the dust settle a little bit.”

The Rangers have a tough stretch ahead, with eight of their next nine games against teams currently in playoff spots.

Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL)

Artemi Panarin leads New York with 15 goals and 37 points, but other key players have struggled. Chris Kreider, with 11 goals and just one assist, was scratched against New Jersey, sparking trade rumors. Mika Zibanejad has only six goals and practiced with the top power-play unit on Friday.

In contrast, the Lightning ended their break on a high note, bouncing back from a 4-2 loss to the Florida Panthers with a 4-0 shutout win on the road, with backup goaltender Jonas Johansson making 36 saves.

Tampa Bay had suffered a tough loss on Sunday, with Florida scoring a power-play goal and two short-handed goals during the same penalty kill. But Johansson’s strong performance helped them recover, stopping nine power-play shots for his fourth career shutout.

Coach Jon Cooper praised Johansson’s play, saying, “He has a unique gift of being able to hang in there and not play seven or 10 games and give you a good one. Those guys are hard to find.” Johansson is 4-1-1 this season with a .902 save percentage in seven appearances. Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Lightning’s starting goaltender, is expected to start against New York.

Nikita Kucherov reached a team-high 50 points with a goal on Monday, continuing his hot streak with 21 points in his last 10 of 11 games.

Rangers Set Franchise Record in Shootout Victory Over Islanders, Strengthen Division Lead

The New York Rangers secured a crucial 3-2 shootout win over the New York Islanders on Saturday, edging three points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division. The victory, fueled by a game-winning goal from Vincent Trocheck, also set a franchise record with 54 regular-season wins. Igor Shesterkin played a pivotal role with 34 saves in regulation and two more in the shootout, outdueling Islanders’ goalie Ilya Sorokin. Despite the loss, the Islanders earned a valuable point, further solidifying their playoff hopes.

While the Rangers celebrated the win, the Islanders remained optimistic, knowing their playoff chances were still strong despite their six-game win streak being broken. Going into the evening, the Islanders could have clinched a playoff spot if Detroit and Washington lost. While both teams won, the Islanders’ postseason berth seemed inevitable unless a remarkable series of events occurred. Ryan Pulock acknowledged the importance of securing a point in a game that had the intensity of playoff hockey.

The Rangers had to fight back after a rough second period, where they lost the lead and struggled to generate offense. Their usual resilience came to the forefront in the third period. The Islanders had a golden opportunity to increase their lead when Artemi Panarin took down Adam Pelech on a breakaway, leading to a penalty shot. Shesterkin’s glove save preserved the 2-1 scoreline and set the stage for the Rangers’ comeback.

Panarin later tied the game with a wrist shot, following Shesterkin’s crucial saves. The game continued into a thrilling overtime period, where both teams traded chances, including a dramatic save by Shesterkin on Mathew Barzal. In the shootout, Shesterkin denied Kyle Palmieri and Brock Nelson, while Panarin and Trocheck scored for the Rangers, securing the win. This marked a significant bounce-back performance after their loss to the Islanders earlier in the week.

For the Islanders, their inability to capitalize on power plays was a key factor in their defeat. They allowed a shorthanded goal to Braden Schneider during an extended five-on-four power play in the second period. Although they regained the lead thanks to two goals from Brock Nelson, the Islanders’ inability to threaten on the power play ultimately cost them the game. With Noah Dobson’s injury and their six-game win streak broken, the Islanders must avoid chaos to secure a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Rangers’ victory restored their momentum as they head into the final game of the regular season with confidence.

Rangers Defeat Facing Devils on Monday Leading To Further Scrutiny

The mood in the New York Rangers’ locker room was heavy with disappointment following their 5-0 defeat to the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Monday. The frustration was visible on the faces of every player.

“We’ve got to show more heart,” forward Vincent Trocheck said. “Individually, everyone needs to take a good look at themselves in the mirror and dig deeper. On multiple goals we gave up against New Jersey, we left our goalie out to dry. We’ve got to be better.”

Trocheck, who plays center on the top line with Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere, attempted to spark his team early in the game by dropping the gloves with Devils forward Paul Cotter at 3:55.

However, the fight seemed to fire up the Devils, and just 34 seconds later, Jack Hughes scored the game’s opening goal at 4:29.

“You’re never preplanning it, but when you’re in a hole like that, you’re just trying to get the guys going,” Trocheck explained. “We have to go out and do it ourselves. You can talk all you want, but we can’t keep looking around waiting for someone else. We have to dig deeper.”

When asked if he felt the team lacked heart, head coach Peter Laviolette expressed dissatisfaction with how the game ended. The Rangers were outshot 29-12 and went 0-for-4 on the power play, managing only three shots on goal.

“I don’t like the way we finished the game today,” Laviolette said. “I agree with Trocheck. The purpose with which we play needs to be better.

We need more from everyone. In the second period, we held them in check 5-on-5, but we didn’t generate enough ourselves, and that’s been an issue lately. Defensively, we’ve tightened up, but offensively, we’re not getting the looks we need to succeed.”

The Rangers (16-17-1) head into the holiday break having lost 13 of their last 17 games, all in regulation, after starting the season with a 12-4-1 record. They have fallen out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. During this stretch, they’ve ranked last in the NHL in goals per game (2.06), scoring two or fewer goals in 11 of those 17 games.

“The disconnect could be many things, but I feel, like I’ve said before, there’s extra weight on us,” said Panarin.

Rangers vs Devils (Photo: Imagn)

“Everyone is trying too hard, maybe not relaxed enough. I can promise everyone on the team wants to win and works hard, but when confidence is lacking, everything feels harder than it really is.”

Panarin, who had one shot on goal and two giveaways in 19:06 of ice time on Monday, is hopeful that the upcoming break will provide a reset. The Rangers won’t play again until Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“Is this the worst I’ve felt since I’ve been here? I think so, yeah, but we have to use the next few days to rest, reload, and then bring our best hockey,” Panarin said.

The Rangers made several roster moves leading up to the game, trading defenseman Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks on December 6 and forward Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken 12 days later. On Monday, Laviolette made the decision to scratch veteran Chris Kreider in favor of Jonny Brodzinski in an attempt to spark a positive response.

Kreider, who has 12 points (11 goals, 1 assist) in 30 games this season but has only one goal in his last nine games, is the longest-tenured player on the team (13 seasons).

“Anytime you talk to a player about not being in the lineup, it’s never an easy conversation,” Laviolette said. “At the end of the day, we’re not playing the brand of hockey we need to play to be successful, and he’s a guy we rely on to help deliver that. These conversations aren’t easy, but it was the decision I made.”

Last season, the Rangers won the Presidents’ Trophy for having the best record in the NHL (55-23-4) and reached the Eastern Conference Final, where they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in six games.

“We’re not where we want to be, mentally, and we’re not where we want to be record-wise,” Laviolette said. “We’re not where we want to be anywhere, so this is not acceptable. We’re here to win hockey games, and right now, we’re not doing that.”

The Rangers send Kaapo Kakko to the Kraken in exchange for Will Borgen and draft selections

The New York Rangers traded Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday, ending his difficult time with the team.

In return, the Rangers got defenseman Will Borgen, a 2025 third-round pick, and a 2026 sixth-round pick from Seattle. This trade happened less than 36 hours after Kakko expressed frustration about being a healthy scratch.

It’s unclear if his comments influenced the timing of the trade, as Rangers general manager Chris Drury had been wanting to shake up the roster for several weeks.

“Kaapo is a young dynamic forward who brings skill and offense to our club,” said Kraken GM Ron Francis in a statement. “We’re excited to have him join us.”

Kakko, who was surprised by coach Peter Laviolette’s decision to bench him in the Rangers’ game against St. Louis on Sunday, had said, “It’s easy to take the young guy and put him out.”

The Rangers have been struggling, losing 11 of their last 14 games, including five of seven since trading captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim. The team was shut out Tuesday night in Nashville.

Seattle Kraken and Boston Bruins

Kakko, the second overall pick in the 2019 draft and a native of Finland, was a healthy scratch during the Rangers’ run to the Eastern Conference final last spring.

He was also rumored to be part of trade talks over the summer, even after signing a one-year contract as a restricted free agent. With 14 points in his first 30 games this season, he now gets a fresh start with the Kraken at 23 years old.

Borgen, 27, was picked by Seattle in the 2021 expansion draft from Buffalo. His addition gives the Rangers a right-shot defenseman with 261 NHL regular-season and playoff games of experience to replace Trouba.

“(I) want to thank Will for everything he’s done for our franchise,” said Francis. “As an original member of the Kraken, we wish him all the best in New York.”

After making the trade, the Rangers sent defenseman Victor Mancini to their AHL affiliate in Hartford and called up forward Matt Rempe, who has spent most of the season in the minors.

Blues Hold Off Rangers for 3-2 Win Behind Key Contributions from Kyrou, Buchnevich, and Hofer

The St. Louis Blues secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers, bouncing back after an overtime loss to the Dallas Stars the previous night. Despite the Rangers’ recent struggles, they made it challenging for the Blues by scoring twice in quick succession during the third period. The Blues, however, managed to hold on and close out the game effectively. Robert Thomas, who extended his point streak to seven games, emphasized the team’s strong 5-on-5 play and acknowledged the need to avoid letting opponents get back into games.

Key players stepped up for the Blues, with Pavel Buchnevich extending his point streak to nine games, Jordan Kyrou scoring for the fourth consecutive game, and goalie Joel Hofer earning his fourth straight win with 26 saves. Coach Jim Montgomery highlighted improved checking habits as a critical factor in the win, a stark contrast to recent games where defensive lapses had been costly. The team responded well to Montgomery’s focus on defensive consistency and intensity, even managing to stay composed under the Rangers’ third-period pressure.

Blues Hold Off Rangers for 3-2 Win Behind Key Contributions from Kyrou, Buchnevich, and Hofer
Blues Hold Off Rangers for 3-2 Win Behind Key Contributions from Kyrou, Buchnevich, and Hofer

Montgomery’s emphasis on correcting “habits” through video sessions rather than on-ice practices paid dividends. Despite a demanding schedule, the Blues demonstrated improved defensive discipline, which limited the Rangers’ opportunities. The coach noted that lapses in intensity could quickly lead to trouble in such a competitive league. His timeout during the third period helped refocus the players, underscoring the importance of maintaining a high level of play for a full 60 minutes.

The Blues’ top players, including Thomas, Buchnevich, and Kyrou, contributed decisively, turning scoring opportunities into goals despite subpar possession metrics in recent games. Kyrou’s speed and ability to capitalize on turnovers proved instrumental, as seen in his impressive goal off a steal. Montgomery praised the trio’s ability to make opposing defenses uncomfortable, creating chances even in tight situations. Their improved performance was a significant factor in securing the win.

A notable new addition to the Blues, defenseman Cam Fowler, made an immediate impact with his puck-moving ability and composure under pressure. Paired with Colton Parayko, Fowler helped the team maintain cleaner puck transportation and spend less time defending in their own zone. His veteran presence and smart decision-making have smoothed his transition to the team, reinforcing the blue line’s stability. Coach Montgomery lauded Fowler’s experience and game-management skills, noting the positive influence he’s had in just two games with the Blues.

Shesterkin Posts Shutout in 200th Game as Rangers Cruise to 4-0 Win Over Blues

The New York Rangers secured a dominant 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues, highlighted by Igor Shesterkin’s 13th career shutout in his milestone 200th NHL game. Shesterkin made 26 saves, continuing his impressive form this season with a record of 27-13-2. First-period goals by Vincent Trocheck and Jimmy Vesey set the tone for the Rangers, while Chris Kreider and Kaapo Kakko added insurance tallies. Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox contributed two assists each, showcasing the team’s offensive depth.

This victory solidified the Rangers’ strong position in the Metropolitan Division, where they lead second-place Carolina by four points. The win also improved their record to 22-8-0 at Madison Square Garden, with nine victories in their last ten home games. Coach Peter Laviolette praised the team’s sharp 60-minute effort, reflecting their recent consistency and balanced contributions from both veteran players and newcomers.

The Rangers’ power play was a key factor, converting on three of six opportunities. Trocheck opened the scoring during a power play in his 700th career game, and Kreider added another power-play goal in the third period. Kakko capped the scoring with yet another power-play marker, emphasizing the team’s ability to capitalize on St. Louis’ penalties. Rookie Matt Rempe also made an impact despite his would-be goal being disallowed, earning recognition for his physical play and energy on a reconfigured line.

St. Louis, meanwhile, continued its struggles, losing its third straight game and falling to a 3-7-1 record in its last 11 outings. Interim coach Drew Bannister cited penalties and the Rangers’ skill as key issues. Shesterkin’s stellar saves, including critical stops against Brandon Saad, Kasperi Kapanen, and Robert Thomas, underscored the Blues’ inability to generate offense against a disciplined Rangers defense.

In addition to the win, the Rangers showcased new roster additions. Alexander Wennberg and Jack Roslovic made their team debuts, contributing to the lineup’s versatility. Wennberg assisted on Kakko’s goal and showed promise centering a new line, while Roslovic found synergy with Mika Zibanejad and Kreider. Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel, acquired in a recent trade, participated in warmups but was scratched for the game. The Rangers’ depth and cohesion continue to drive their success as they prepare for the season’s final stretch.

Juuse Saros and the Nashville Predators blank the struggling New York Rangers

Juuse Saros made 25 saves to end an eight-game losing streak and helped the Nashville Predators secure a 2-0 win over the struggling New York Rangers on Tuesday. Jonathan Marchessault and Adam Wilsby scored the goals for Nashville, with assists from Steven Stamkos and Filip Forsberg on both plays.

Saros was solid throughout the game, making key saves when needed and recording his third shutout of the season. He had entered the game with a 3.40 goals-against average and had gone 0-5-3 in his last eight starts. This victory helped the Predators win two of their last three games after an eight-game winless stretch.

The Rangers suffered their third straight loss and dropped 11 of their last 14 games after a strong start of 12-4-1. Despite registering 25 shots on goal, the Rangers struggled to get anything past Saros, as Nashville blocked 29 shots and prevented many others from reaching the net.

Igor Shesterkin makes a pad save in the 1st period

This was the first time the Rangers were shut out in the 2024-25 season. Igor Shesterkin, who gave up five goals in his last start, made 30 saves on 32 shots for New York in this game.

The Predators took the lead at 13:37 of the first period. Forsberg passed the puck to Stamkos in the slot, who then set up Marchessault for the opening goal.

The Rangers stayed aggressive offensively during the first two periods, but Saros kept them off the scoreboard. He stopped a breakaway attempt by Vincent Trocheck earlier in the game and made a crucial save on Adam Fox’s shot late in the third period.

Nashville sealed the win with a second goal at 8:01 of the third period. Wilsby carried the puck into the zone, dodged a check, and fired a shot past Shesterkin for his first career goal in his 10th NHL game.
