Paul Goldschmidt, now with the Yankees, reflects on his 2024 season with the Cardinals: “I’m better than this”.

Paul Goldschmidt had a tough start to last season, including a career-worst 0-for-32 slump that ended on May 11 with a ninth-inning single to avoid his first five-strikeout game.

“The feeling was just like, man, I’m better than this,” the former NL MVP said on Thursday, three days after signing a $12.5 million, one-year contract with the New York Yankees.

“But you got to go out and prove it. I mean, if you don’t perform, then you know you’re not going to be playing. And I think that’s just the truth in this game and in life.”

A seven-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner, the 37-year-old first baseman left St. Louis and joined the Yankees after they lost Juan Soto to the rival New York Mets.

Following a World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees have also added left-hander Max Fried, closer Devin Williams, and outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger.

New York Yankees players celebrate in the 3rd inning

Goldschmidt will join Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Bellinger to give the Yankees four MVPs on their roster.

Goldschmidt, who had shaved off his beard and mustache, spoke to the media for about half an hour. He expressed excitement about joining his new team, the third of his major league career, and remembered a series he played at Yankee Stadium with St. Louis on Labor Day weekend last year.

“Just to feel the energy walking out of the dugout, that was really fun,” he said. “The energy’s high every game there.”

Goldschmidt spent his first eight seasons with Arizona and the last six with the Cardinals, but struggled last season, finishing with a career-low .245 batting average, 22 home runs, and 65 RBIs. He bounced back late in the season, hitting .283 with seven homers and 25 RBIs after July 28.

“Some things that I did wrong got exposed, and I just wasn’t hitting pitches that for most of my career I’ve been able to connect on,” he explained. “There were things that the opponents were doing, whether they were pitching me differently or stuff like that.”

Goldschmidt has a career .289 batting average with 362 home runs and 1,187 RBIs from his time with Arizona (2011-18) and the Cardinals (2019-24). In 2022, he hit .317 with 35 homers, 115 RBIs, and a .981 OPS, winning the MVP award.

In January 2023, Goldschmidt spent a day with Judge working on his hitting in Tampa, Florida, near Judge’s home.

Paul Goldschmidt reacts after striking out

“That’s something I’ve always tried to do, find great hitters or great players or coaches and just try to seek them out and try to learn from them,” Goldschmidt said.

“We just stayed in touch. He’s one of the best hitters in the world, maybe the best hitter, and as a right-handed power hitter, a guy that I’m very, very excited to play with and get to see him work every day.”

Goldschmidt also went to Driveline Baseball in Kent, Washington, before the 2024 season for two days of mechanical analysis. However, he struggled in spring training, going 6-for-47 (.128), and hit .224 with 22 RBIs in 52 games through May.

He noticed that his upper and lower bodies were out of alignment in his swing, and mentally, he was also struggling.

“There’s times where maybe I was patient and pitchers were just getting ahead very quickly, and I was just sitting there in an 0-2, 1-2 count,” he said. “It’s easy to look at somebody when they’re struggling and say what’s wrong. It’s not always easy to say how to fix it or for us to actually fix it or make those adjustments.”

Paul Goldschmidt and the New York Yankees have agreed to a $12.5 million, one-year contract

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt and the New York Yankees finalized their one-year, $12.5 million contract on Monday.

Goldschmidt had agreed to the deal on December 21, pending a successful physical.

He became the Yankees’ fourth major addition since Juan Soto was traded to the New York Mets. Other new players include left-hander Max Fried, closer Devin Williams, and outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger. Goldschmidt’s arrival likely means that Bellinger will play mostly in the outfield.

A seven-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner, and the 2022 NL MVP, Goldschmidt joins fellow MVPs Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Bellinger on the Yankees. Goldschmidt became a free agent after completing a $130 million, five-year contract with St. Louis.

He spent his first eight seasons with Arizona and his last six with the Cardinals, where he had a career-low .245 batting average last season, hitting 22 homers and 65 RBIs. However, he improved his numbers later in the season, batting .283 with seven homers and 25 RBIs from July 28 onward.

Goldschmidt hit .295 with five homers, 16 RBIs, and an .839 OPS in 167 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers. Against right-handers, he batted .230 with 17 homers, 49 RBIs, and a .675 OPS in 487 plate appearances.

He is a career .289 hitter with 362 homers and 1,187 RBIs from his time with the Diamondbacks (2011-18) and Cardinals (2019-24). In 2022, he batted .317 with 35 homers, 115 RBIs, and a .981 OPS.

The Yankees may still be looking for a third baseman and left-handed relievers, as there are no lefty relievers currently on their 40-man roster.

Tigers sign ex-Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres to a one-year, $15 million contract

The Detroit Tigers signed former New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres to a $15 million, one-year contract on Friday.

Torres, a two-time All-Star, gets a slight raise from his previous $14.2 million salary with the Yankees. The contract also includes a one-time assignment bonus of $500,000.

“We were very aggressive to try to land it. I mean, I was on the phone for most of Christmas Eve, which my family didn’t really appreciate,” said Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris. “But, we feel like we got better today. We feel like adding Gleyber made us better, and we feel like he’s going to make the players around him a lot better.”

In his seven seasons with the Yankees, Torres batted .265 with 138 home runs and 441 RBIs. The Yankees acquired him in 2016 from the Cubs as part of the trade that sent closer Aroldis Chapman to Chicago.

The 28-year-old infielder hit .257 last season with 15 home runs, 63 RBIs, and 26 doubles while helping the Yankees win the AL East and reach the World Series, where they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games.

“Our offense has to get better,” Harris said. “He can fit anywhere in our lineup.”

Torres struggled early in the season, hitting .221 with eight homers and 30 RBIs through July 4. However, he finished strong, batting .298 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in his final 68 games.

Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres celebrates after a home run in the 3rd inning

“From the very first conversation that we had with Gleyber this offseason, we talked about how we think there’s more in there. We think he can get better on both sides of the ball. Gleyber believes that, too,” Harris said.

“He had a lot of opportunity to go to different places this winter on longer deals than the one he took. But his agents were very up front with me about his desire to bet on himself, and honestly, that made me want him more.”

Torres had 18 errors last season, which was six more than any other second baseman in the major leagues. He was benched for a game against the New York Mets on June 27 after a poor performance and was pulled by manager Aaron Boone for lack of hustle during an August 2 game against Toronto. However, Torres responded well to Boone’s decision and did not have similar issues afterward.

“We’re really excited to add Gleyber to our mix,” Harris said.

Torres will play second base for the Tigers, while Colt Keith will shift to first base. Harris said Keith had 12 errors at second base last season, the second most among major league second basemen.

Harris also told Spencer Torkelson that there’s still a role available for him at first base and designated hitter if he performs well. The 25-year-old Torkelson had 31 home runs and 94 RBIs for the Tigers in 2023 but struggled last season, batting .219 with 10 homers and 37 RBIs in 92 games. He was sent down to the minors from June 3 to August 16.

Torres played shortstop for the Yankees from 2020 to 2021 but moved back to second base in 2021 after making 18 errors during that season.

Harris said the Tigers still believe Keith is “a very capable second baseman.”

Detroit Tigers player celebrates in the 9th inning

“He may move back to second base in the future. But for 2025, our best team has Gleyber at second base and Colt at first base,” Harris said.

Torres, originally from Caracas, Venezuela, was signed by the Cubs in 2013 and traded to the Yankees in 2016. That year, the Cubs won the World Series, ending a 108-year title drought.

Torres made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2018 and homered in four straight games as a rookie. At 21 years old, he became the youngest player in American League history to achieve that feat. He also earned two All-Star selections and finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

He has been successful in the postseason as well, posting a .795 OPS with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in six playoff appearances for the Yankees.

“One of our areas of need was more balance in our lineup. We got a little bit too left-handed toward the end of the season,” Harris said. “Adding a player with Gleyber’s track record against left-handed pitching is a significant boost to our lineup.

We think he’s going to add on-base skills, we think he’s going to add damage, and we think he’s going to be able to protect some of our young but really talented left-handed hitters who will hit in the middle of our lineup in 2025.”

In a corresponding move, the Tigers designated left-hander Bailey Horn for assignment.

Loáisiga secured a one-year contract with the Yankees worth $5 million as he makes his comeback

Right-handed pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga has signed a one-year contract with the New York Yankees, which guarantees him $5 million as he returns from Tommy John surgery. He could earn up to $10.5 million over the next two seasons.

Loáisiga’s deal includes a $500,000 signing bonus and a $4.5 million salary for the upcoming season. The Yankees also have a $5 million team option for 2026, with no buyout. He could earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses in 2026: $100,000 for pitching 50 innings and then $100,000 for every additional five innings up to 70.

Pitching coach Matt Blake mentioned last week that the 30-year-old Loáisiga could return to action in late April or May after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 1.

“I imagine him being one of the high-leverage guys,” Blake said. “Obviously, we got to take some time to get him right, make sure we don’t rush him into competition.”

New York Yankees players celebrate in the 3rd inning

Loáisiga had a $2.5 million salary in 2023 during his final season of arbitration eligibility, after which he became a free agent.

He made three relief appearances in the first week of the season but was placed on the injured list due to a strained right flexor muscle. He then had Tommy John surgery performed by the team’s physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

In 2023, Loáisiga was limited to 17 games because of right elbow inflammation, which kept him out from April 5 to August 8.

For his career, Loáisiga has a record of 19-11 with a 3.44 ERA across 11 starts and 152 relief appearances over seven seasons. He has struck out 207 batters and walked 72 in 219 2/3 innings. In 2023, his sinker averaged 97.8 mph.

Yankees $76 Million Push For Juan Soto Failed While Paul Goldschmidt Leads By Example

The New York Yankees made a strong push to re-sign Juan Soto, but ultimately failed, as Soto instead signed a 16-year, $765 million contract with their rivals, the New York Mets.

At the Mets, Soto will join forces with Francisco Lindor and possibly Pete Alonso (if he remains in Queens), with hopes of securing the team’s first World Series title since the 1980s.

While the Yankees were involved in the Soto discussions until the very end, they were ultimately unable to match the Mets’ final offer, which, with incentives, could reach over $800 million over the life of the contract.

In response, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and his team decided to allocate some of that money to other players, aiming to replace Soto by committee while also addressing key needs. The primary acquisitions include Max Fried, Devin Williams, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt.

Goldschmidt’s addition, however, has sparked some controversy among Yankees fans. The 37-year-old first baseman is coming off a subpar season by his standards in 2024.

“This is probably the worst I’ve performed on the field in my career,” Goldschmidt admitted at the end of the Cardinals’ season.

Paul Goldschmidt (Photo: AP)

“That was disappointing, a good bit of that burden was on me. If I could’ve played how I believe I’m capable of playing, we could’ve won more games and maybe this might have turned out differently.”

For more news and rumors, check out MLB Insider Robert Murray’s work on The Baseball Insiders podcast, subscribe to The Moonshot, our weekly MLB newsletter, and join the discord for exclusive insider updates during the MLB offseason.

Despite Goldschmidt’s recent struggles, the Yankees are still offering him a $12 million contract, potentially positioning him as their cleanup hitter — at least for now. This may change as the team makes additional moves following the holidays.

Reports indicate that Goldschmidt chose to sign with the Yankees for less money, a decision that underscores the significance of being part of the storied franchise.

For Soto, however, money was the primary motivator. As he’s at the peak of his value, his agent, Scott Boras, secured the most lucrative deal possible.

No one can fault Soto for that decision. What remains to be seen is whether Soto believes in the Mets’ long-term success plan. If not, the difference between $750 million and $765 million might end up being the key factor in Soto’s pursuit of a World Series title.

Yankees Target Top Pitchers as Snell Predicted to Sign with Rival Red Sox

On November 6, it was reported that the New York Yankees are actively pursuing top free-agent pitchers this offseason, including Max Fried, Corbin Burnes, and Blake Snell. The team’s interest in these elite pitchers is likely tied to their ability to re-sign star outfielder Juan Soto. Pursuing both Soto and an ace pitcher would require a significant financial commitment, so the Yankees’ strategy will depend on whether they can retain Soto.

If the Yankees are unable to secure one of these top-tier pitchers, fans would likely prefer that these players sign with teams outside the AL East, particularly avoiding any situation where they join the Red Sox, a major rival. The Yankees’ pursuit of a starting pitcher is clearly influenced by the competitive nature of their division, where the performance of rivals like Boston plays a significant role.

Yankees Target Top Pitchers as Snell Predicted to Sign with Rival Red Sox

In fact, Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston predicted that Blake Snell could end up with the Red Sox. Despite the Red Sox having the seventh-best ERA among starting pitchers in 2024, Beaston argued that the team needs to improve its rotation to compete with the potent offenses in the AL East. With teams like New York, Baltimore, Toronto, and Tampa Bay expected to improve, adding a strong arm like Snell would help Boston stay competitive.

Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner, would be a strong addition to the Red Sox’s pitching staff. In 2024, he posted a 3.12 ERA, 145 strikeouts, and a 1.05 WHIP, showcasing his ability to perform at a high level. His experience facing some of the toughest lineups in the American League would make him a valuable asset to Boston as they look to strengthen their rotation.

Throughout his career, Snell has faced the Yankees 10 times, recording a 4-6 record with a 4.39 ERA and 99 strikeouts. While his history against New York has been mixed, his overall performance and experience make him an appealing option for any team looking to bolster their pitching staff. As the offseason progresses, it remains uncertain where Snell will sign, but his decision could have a significant impact on the AL East’s competitive balance.

Clay Holmes feeling optimistic and eager about transitioning from bullpen to starting rotation with the NY Mets

After spending six years in the bullpen, Clay Holmes is confident that he can become a successful starting pitcher, and he’s excited about this change.

He’s also hopeful that his move to the New York Mets might even inspire a superstar teammate to join him: slugger Juan Soto.

Holmes agreed to a three-year, $38 million contract with the Mets this month, just two days before Soto left the New York Yankees to join the Mets on a record $765 million, 15-year deal. Both signings were finalized last week.

“Deep down, I can’t lie,” Holmes said Tuesday during a Zoom call with reporters. “I mean, I obviously made my decision because I think it’s the best place. But hopefully, you know, I was like, maybe Juan sees this and sees that the water’s fine and will follow me over here. So, I’m super pumped for it.”

Holmes, a two-time All-Star who was the Yankees’ closer, was a starter in the minors, and he said the idea of going back to starting has always been in the back of his mind. In fact, he was “somewhat excited” in 2020 about the possibility of starting for a team overseas.

Juan Soto in the news conference

As a reliever, Holmes relied heavily on his sinker, which averaged 96.6 mph last season. He threw it 56% of the time, along with 23% sliders and 21% sweepers. This combination helped him achieve the highest groundball rate (68.6%) in the majors over the past three years.

These numbers make Holmes a pitcher who could go deep into games and quiet hitters from both sides of the plate.

However, he also worked on a changeup and four-seam fastball to add variety during bullpen sessions this year with Yankees assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel, who was hired by the Mets this offseason to serve in the same role.

“I think just, there’s some room there for an arsenal that’s kind of tough to do as a reliever,” Holmes said. “You have a very limited window and pitches you can keep sharp, and you kind of have to rely on your strengths a lot more.

But I do think I have the depth, the arsenal to be a little more unpredictable than just relying on my sinker all the time. And I think starting gives me the best opportunity to do that and expose it. So, I’m excited to see what this could bring, the changeup and the four-seam.”

Holmes made 114 starts in the minor leagues, but only four in the majors, all as a rookie with Pittsburgh in 2018.

Garrett Crochet reacts after giving 2 home runs

Once he became a free agent this fall, Holmes said he met with clubs that were interested in him as a starter, and he didn’t want to look back on his career and regret never trying it again. He said the Yankees never discussed this possibility with him.

He’s happy to stay in New York and believes the Mets are a great fit as he makes this transition, due to their solid pitching staff under president of baseball operations David Stearns — including Druschel, pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, and manager Carlos Mendoza, who was the Yankees’ bench coach during most of Holmes’ time with them.

Stearns and Mendoza helped the Mets make an unexpected run to the National League Championship Series last season, their first with the team.

“I think the culture here they’ve created is something that I think people want to be a part of. There’s a real momentum here,” Holmes said. “It just gave me a lot of confidence. This is definitely not going to be a transition that just happens, (that) I can do by myself. And so, surrounding myself with people that I felt really good about was important.”

New York Yankees players celebrate in the 3rd inning

Holmes, who will turn 32 in March, has a $12 million player option for 2027 with no buyout. He said he wants to pitch 160 innings next season and is glad the Mets aren’t setting any pre-determined limits on his workload.

He joins a rotation that is expected to include Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Frankie Montas, and Paul Blackburn, with other possible candidates like Tylor Megill.

Holmes mentioned that he may need to adjust his conditioning but feels fortunate to be working out this offseason with All-Star lefty Garrett Crochet, who was recently traded from the Chicago White Sox to the Boston Red Sox.

Crochet is one of several former relievers who have successfully transitioned to starting roles in recent years, including San Diego’s Michael King, Atlanta’s Reynaldo López, and Kansas City’s Seth Lugo.

Holmes said he’s excited to talk to King — the two were teammates with the Yankees before King was traded to the Padres in December 2023, a trade that also sent Soto to the Yankees for one season.

“There’s kind of somewhat of a little road map. You see how guys do it. It’s not super common, but you don’t feel like you’re in uncharted waters,” Holmes said. “I’m excited to take this on.”

The Yankees have acquired closer Devin Williams from the Brewers in exchange for Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin

After acquiring Juan Soto for just one season and failing to keep him as a free agent, the New York Yankees are taking a similar risk with Devin Williams.

The Yankees acquired the All-Star closer from the Milwaukee Brewers for left-hander Nestor Cortes and infield prospect Caleb Durbin on Friday. The Yankees will also send $2 million to the Brewers as part of the trade.

“He’s a year away from free agency but someone that we’ve tried to acquire for a number of years,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “I’m sure we weren’t the only bidders here in the end.”

Williams, a 30-year-old right-hander, is eligible for free agency after the 2025 season. He was diagnosed with two stress fractures in his back during spring training and didn’t make his season debut until July 28.

“Certainly not trying to downplay the impact that Devin had, but we feel like we still have a good amount of strength there with our bullpen,” Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said.

Nestor Cortes throws against the SOX batter

Williams went 14 for 15 in save opportunities with a 1.25 ERA. He struck out 38 batters and walked 11 among 88 batters over 21 2/3 innings. His fastball averaged 94.7 mph, and he threw it on 53.5% of his pitches. He mixed in 45% changeups, known as the “Airbender,” and about 1.5% cutters.

Williams’ 43.2% strikeout percentage was the highest in Major League Baseball among pitchers with at least 20 innings.

“Certainly doesn’t seem to be afraid,” Cashman said. “You can’t do that job if you’re afraid of the big stage.”

Williams, an All-Star in 2022 and 2023, was drafted in the second round in 2013. He has a career record of 27-10 with a 1.83 ERA and 68 saves in 78 chances over six seasons. He has struck out 375 batters and walked 112 in 235 2/3 innings over 241 games.

Milwaukee declined a $10.5 million club option for Williams, instead choosing to buy him out for $250,000 last month, which made him eligible for arbitration.

Williams joins a bullpen that includes Luke Weaver, who took over as closer from Clay Holmes in September, Jake Cousins, and Ian Hamilton. The Yankees do not have a left-handed reliever on their 40-man roster.

“If you have right-handers that can neutralize lefties, that’s a benefit. It limits your desperation for immediately a left-on-left,” Cashman said.

Cortes, who turned 30 on Tuesday, was an All-Star in 2022, when he went 12-4 with a career-best 2.44 ERA in 28 starts. He only made one start after May 30 in 2023 because of a strained left rotator cuff. He was sidelined late in 2024 by a flexor strain in his left elbow.

He returned for the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, entering in the 10th inning of the opener. He retired Shohei Ohtani on a foulout with his first pitch but gave up a game-ending grand slam to Freddie Freeman on his second.

“He’s had a fully healthy offseason,” Arnold said. “We expect him to come into camp ready to go as normal.”

Cortes, known for his varied pitching deliveries, has a record of 33-21 with a 3.80 ERA in 86 starts and 49 relief appearances over seven seasons. He is eligible for arbitration and can also become a free agent after next season.

“He brings real stability, I think, to our rotation,” Arnold said. “Somebody that’s been a major piece of a really good championship-caliber team in the New York Yankees, I think will fit us very well, especially after the loss of Willy Adames.”

The Yankees had an excess of starters after reaching an agreement with left-hander Max Fried for $218 million over eight years. The rotation is also expected to include ace Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Luis Gil, and Clarke Schmidt, with Marcus Stroman also available.

Durbin, 25, hit .287 with 10 homers, 60 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

“We just felt it was harder to acquire someone at the level of Devin Williams than it would be to try to figure out the infield circumstances,” Cashman said.

New York Yankees players celebrate in the 4th inning

Durbin was with the big league team last spring training.

“I think he’s a stud,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said last month. “Great bat-to-ball, elite ability on the bases as a base stealer, good defender in the middle of the diamond, second base. He’s really started over the last year-plus to create some position flexibility, too. He’s played some short, he’s played some third. We introduced him to some outfield this year.”

Durbin hit .312 with five homers, 21 RBIs, and 29 steals in 24 games in the Arizona Fall League.

“We love the style of game that he brings to our team,” Arnold said. “I think that’s going to be a really nice fit with Pat Murphy’s style of baseball.”

Cashman said he’s spoken with Scott Boras about his remaining free-agent clients, including third baseman Alex Bregman and first baseman Pete Alonso.

“Certainly respect the player and his ability and how much winning he’s been a part of,” Cashman said of Bregman, “but that’s about as far as I will say at this point.”

Max Fried Signs Historic $218 Million Deal with Yankees, Becoming MLB’s Highest-Paid Lefty

Max Fried, the accomplished left-handed pitcher known for his impressive career with the Atlanta Braves, has reportedly reached a significant agreement with the New York Yankees. He is set to join the Yankees on a massive eight-year, $218 million contract, which will make him the highest-paid left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball history. This deal, pending a physical, surpasses the previous record for a left-handed pitcher set by David Price’s $217 million contract with the Boston Red Sox in 2015. With this signing, the Yankees significantly enhanced their already impressive pitching rotation.

Fried, 30, is considered one of the top pitchers in the National League, having posted an exceptional 2.81 ERA over the past five seasons. His remarkable performance and consistency on the mound have earned him two All-Star selections throughout his seven years with the Atlanta Braves. His stellar pitching was a key factor in the Braves’ victory during the 2021 World Series, where he pitched six shutout innings to secure Atlanta’s championship win, further cementing his reputation as one of the league’s elite starters.

Max Fried

The acquisition of Fried comes at an exciting time for the Yankees, who already boast a strong pitching staff, including stars like Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón. This move further strengthens their rotation and adds depth to a roster aiming to contend for a championship. Fried’s addition is seen as a strategic move to bolster the Yankees’ pitching prowess and improve their chances of success in the upcoming seasons.

Fried’s decision to sign with the Yankees is particularly notable because he was one of the most sought-after free agents on the market. Other teams, including the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, were reportedly in the mix to acquire the talented pitcher. His decision to join the Yankees over other potential suitors highlights the team’s appeal and the significant financial investment they made to secure his services.

In the broader context of the offseason, Fried’s signing comes shortly after the New York Mets made a splash by acquiring outfielder Juan Soto. These moves signal a competitive arms race in the MLB, with both New York teams making bold moves to improve their rosters. For the Yankees, the addition of Fried represents a major step toward reinforcing their pitching staff and solidifying their position as one of the top contenders in the league.

Left-handed pitcher Max Fried has reached an agreement with the Yankees on an 8-year, $218 million contract

The New York Yankees are hoping Max Fried can pitch like he did in 2021 when he helped the Atlanta Braves win the World Series.

Two days after the Yankees lost Juan Soto to the Mets, Fried agreed to join the Yankees with an eight-year, $218 million contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations, who spoke to The Associated Press.

Fried’s contract is the largest ever for a left-handed pitcher, surpassing David Price’s seven-year, $217 million contract with the Boston Red Sox in 2016. The deal, first reported by ESPN, is subject to a successful physical examination, according to the person who requested anonymity because the deal had not been finalized yet.

Yankees fans were upset after Soto accepted the Mets’ offer of $765 million for 15 years, choosing it over the Yankees’ $760 million for 16 years. In response, the Yankees shifted their focus and money toward improving their starting pitching, although Fried comes with some risk.

New York Yankees players celebrate in the 3rd inning

The two-time All-Star has been on the injured list 10 times since 2018, including at least once each season.

Fried, who was a high school teammate of Jack Flaherty and Lucas Giolito at Harvard-Westlake in Los Angeles, now has the fourth-largest contract for a pitcher, behind only Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers ($325 million for 12 years through 2035), Gerrit Cole of the Yankees ($324 million for nine years through 2028), and Stephen Strasburg of Washington ($245 million for seven years through 2026). Strasburg has not pitched since 2022 and has since retired.

After spending his first eight seasons with the Braves, Fried now joins a Yankees rotation that includes Cole, Carlos Rodón, Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt, Nestor Cortes, and Marcus Stroman, suggesting that more moves are likely. Fried reached the agreement on the same day Cortes turned 30 and Rodón turned 32.

Fried, who is a three-time Gold Glove winner and will turn 31 on January 18, has one of the most varied pitching arsenals in the majors, throwing seven different pitches. His fastball averaged 93.9 mph this year, and he threw it 33.6% of the time. Fried also mixed in 21% curveballs, 15.6% sinkers, 13.6% changeups, 5.9% sweepers, 5.6% sliders, and 4.7% cutters.

This year, Fried had an 11-10 record with a 3.25 ERA over 29 starts, striking out 166 batters and walking a career-high 57 in 174 1/3 innings. He missed time this season due to left forearm neuritis, marking his seventh straight season with an IL stint.

Fried’s past injuries include a blister on his middle finger in 2018, a strained left groin in 2018, a blister on his left index finger in 2019, a muscle spasm on his left side in 2020, a strained right hamstring in 2021, a concussion in 2022, and a strained left hamstring, strained left forearm, and blister on his left index finger in 2023.

Fried was drafted seventh overall in the 2012 amateur draft by San Diego. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2014, he was traded to the Braves in December 2014 as part of a six-player deal that sent outfielder Justin Upton to the Padres.

He made his major league debut in August 2017 and was sent down to the minors five times in 2018.

Fried was 17-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 2019 and 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA in the shortened 2020 season, finishing fifth in the National League Cy Young Award voting.

In 2021, he went 14-7 with a 3.04 ERA, including pitching six scoreless innings to help the Braves win the World Series in Game 6. He followed that with a 14-7 record and a 2.48 ERA in 2022, making his first All-Star team. In 2023, Fried was 8-1 with a 2.55 ERA over 14 starts.

Roki Sasaki Set to Be Posted, Creating MLB Bidding Frenzy for Elite Young Pitcher

The baseball world became more exciting just days before the official start of the Winter Meetings as news broke that Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki is expected to be posted this week. This will open a 45-day window for MLB teams to recruit Sasaki, who is widely regarded as one of the best young pitchers globally. The process of securing him will be more complicated than simply offering the highest salary, as he is classified as an international amateur, meaning his contract will be limited to the funds allocated by teams for international free agents.

Sasaki, 23, has been a standout in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), posting a remarkable 2.10 ERA with 505 strikeouts in 394 2/3 innings over four seasons. As he enters the MLB market, his arrival is expected to be a major coup for whichever team lands him. Given his potential and skill set, Sasaki represents an incredible value, similar to the bargain the Angels got when they signed Shohei Ohtani in 2018. His combination of a 100 mph fastball and devastating splitter makes him a top-tier arm for any team in need of pitching depth.

For teams like the Yankees and Mets, the challenge is finding ways to meet Sasaki’s contractual requirements within their international free agent (IFA) pool. The Yankees and Mets currently have around $6.26 million to allocate to international amateurs for the 2025 season. However, the Mets have already committed a significant portion of their budget to a $5 million deal with 17-year-old Dominican infielder Elian Peña. While this contract is nonbinding, backing out would hurt the Mets’ reputation and cost them a top prospect.

The Mets could look into trading for additional IFA funds to bolster their bid for Sasaki. The team is likely to make efforts to secure the necessary financial resources if they believe they have a genuine shot at landing him. Meanwhile, the defending champion Dodgers, who have notable Japanese players like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, are considered the front-runners for Sasaki’s services. Additionally, the Padres, with pitcher Yu Darvish being a close acquaintance of Sasaki, are also seen as a strong contender.

Sasaki is expected to be posted on Tuesday, and once he is posted, teams will be able to officially begin their recruitment process. Starting January 15, when the 2025 IFA market opens, Sasaki will be eligible to sign with a team. In the meantime, teams may be unsure whether to keep an extra rotation spot open, but any team that lands Sasaki will be thrilled to add a top-of-the-rotation arm with immense upside, all while potentially spending far less than expected.

Juan Soto is beginning to narrow down the list of teams in negotiations, according to his agent, Scott Boras

Juan Soto is beginning to narrow down the teams he’s negotiating with before baseball’s winter meetings next week.

As a free agent likely to receive a record-setting contract, Soto has met with the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays.

“When you’re going through these things, he’s just got a lot of information to go through,” said Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, on Tuesday after a news conference for the Los Angeles Dodgers to introduce Blake Snell, another one of Boras’ clients.

“We’ve had meetings with a number of franchises. He’s begun the process of eliminating teams and doing things, and so he’s — Juan is a very methodical thinker. So we’ll see. But I don’t think anything is imminent in the near future.”

Soto is the top player available among this year’s free agents. A four-time All-Star, he finished third in AL MVP voting after hitting .288 with 41 home runs, 109 RBIs, and 129 walks for the Yankees. He has a .285 career batting average with 201 home runs, 592 RBIs, and 769 walks over seven seasons in Major League Baseball.

Soto turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer from Washington in 2022, leading the Nationals to trade him to San Diego, which later traded him to the Yankees last December. Soto then teamed up with Aaron Judge to help the Yankees reach the World Series, where they lost to the Dodgers.

Boras rejected the idea that high-spending teams like the Yankees and Dodgers are simply buying championships.

“I would say that, as George Steinbrenner said, whatever you do to compete, the fact that I can compete in a different way than others, so be it,” Boras said, referring to the late Yankees owner. “I don’t think that has anything to do with the number of trophies that hang over your stadium. I don’t think fans remember that.”
