The Chargers are heading to Kansas City in hopes of ending a six-game losing streak against the Chiefs

The Los Angeles Chargers would love to be in the position the Kansas City Chiefs are in right now.

The Chiefs, who have won the Super Bowl twice in a row, have already secured a spot in the playoffs for the 10th year in a row, which is the second-longest streak in NFL history. They are also close to winning another AFC West title. Two of their next three games are at home, starting with a Sunday night game against Los Angeles.

Despite their success, the Chiefs are not happy with their current play.

In back-to-back weeks, the Chiefs won games against Carolina and Las Vegas in the final plays, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his teammates (11-1) felt like they had lost. They have said they still haven’t played their best football, and with only five games left in the regular season, they know they need to improve quickly.

“I think when you clinch a playoff spot — that’s your first goal is to get into the playoffs and give yourself a chance to go for that Super Bowl,” said Mahomes, who has been critical of his own play throughout the season. “We know we have a long way to go. We have to continue to work to get better to continue to be a better team going into the playoffs.”

While five games might not seem like a lot of time, it’s more than the Chiefs had last season.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Wake-Up Call: Struggles Amid 11-1 Record Raise Concerns for Playoff Run

It could be argued that the team didn’t reach their lowest point until Christmas Day when they lost to the Raiders at home. But the Chiefs bounced back from that and went on to win the Super Bowl, not losing again until a game against Buffalo a few weeks ago.

“We’re happy to clinch a playoff berth,” Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton said, “but we have a long way to go to reach the end goal.”

The Chargers (8-4) are also in a good position, even though they still have work to do.

They moved up to the No. 5 seed in the playoffs after their win over the Falcons and the Ravens’ loss to the Eagles. This puts them in a good spot under coach Jim Harbaugh in his first season. They have also won five of their last six games, with their only loss being to Baltimore.

“Oh yeah, we look at the standings, for sure,” Harbaugh acknowledged. “They are very important. We’re fighting for our playoff lives.”

The Chargers would greatly benefit from ending their six-game losing streak against the Chiefs on Sunday night.

“It’d be great if somebody else doesn’t win, but you can’t count on that. It’s something you don’t count on,” Harbaugh said. “You have to win the games yourselves. That’s what you have to do. Can’t really spend any energy hoping a team messes up.”

The Falcons travel to face the Vikings, where a struggling Kirk Cousins returns to compete against a flourishing Sam Darnold

The Minnesota Vikings originally brought in Sam Darnold to serve as a bridge between Kirk Cousins and rookie J.J. McCarthy. They believed his strong arm and starting experience would be enough to run a top-level offense until McCarthy was ready to play.

But Darnold has played so well that he’s looked more like a superstar than just a temporary solution.

“He’s a baller,” said Vikings safety Harrison Smith. “He can make things happen when he needs to. I know there’s an outside narrative about him, but ever since he got here, it felt like this would happen.”

Darnold led the Vikings (10-2) to their fifth straight win, throwing a go-ahead touchdown pass against Arizona last week, just one week after leading an impressive overtime drive to beat Chicago. His success in coach Kevin O’Connell’s system has made him one of the standout players this season, especially after a rough start to his career as the third overall pick in the 2018 draft.

Darnold’s first year in Minnesota has been smoother compared to Kirk Cousins’ first year with the Atlanta Falcons. Last week, in a home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Cousins matched his career high with four interceptions.

“I don’t think anybody can put more pressure on Kirk than he has on himself,” said Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. “He’s carried us through this season when we were figuring out a lot of things on defense. He’s just having a hard time right now. There’s nothing to say he can’t catch fire and light it up like he’s done before.”

Sam Darnold celebrates after throwing a touchdown pass in the 2nd half

The Falcons (6-6) are on a three-game losing streak and will face the Vikings on the road, with both teams still battling for division titles. The quarterback match-up adds extra intrigue, as Cousins is returning to the place where he played for six seasons.

Cousins has a $25 million salary cap hit this season, which is the 11th-highest among quarterbacks. Even if the Falcons decide to move on in 2026, they would still be on the hook for $40 million in 2025.

Darnold’s cap hit this year is just $5 million, ranking 31st. Though he will be a free agent in March, the Vikings structured his contract with void years to spread his cap hit into next season for another $5 million. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick, won’t be ready until next year after surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his right knee from the first preseason game.

Although Darnold has had a couple of tough games this season, the Vikings won those games, and he has bounced back strong, not letting any interceptions affect his decisions in future games.

“He’s kind of found a balance the last few weeks of ‘When is it too risky?’ and ‘When can I take a shot?’” said offensive coordinator Wes Phillips.

The Falcons have seen this progress on tape.

“I think he’s playing free,” said Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates. “It’s not a lot of complicated throws or anything that he’s doing. I just think he’s finally comfortable with himself.”

Darren Rizzi is heading back to New Jersey, aiming to secure his position with the Saints and add to the Giants’ struggles

Darren Rizzi is returning to his home state of New Jersey, aiming to keep distractions to a minimum as he tries to extend the New York Giants’ losing streak. He also hopes to lead the New Orleans Saints to a late-season surge so he can remove the “interim” title from his head coaching position.

Rizzi and the Saints (4-8) will face the Giants (2-10) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, where New York has yet to win in six games this season.

Rizzi, who grew up about 15 minutes from the stadium and was a Giants fan, recalled attending many playoff games when Bill Parcells was their coach. However, he is focusing on coaching the game rather than thinking too much about his childhood team.

The Saints still have a chance to win the weak NFC South division. They are two games behind the Falcons and Buccaneers, who are both 6-6. New Orleans has split its games with Atlanta and still has one more game against Tampa Bay.

Derek Carr throws a pass in the 1st half

Since taking over for Dennis Allen in November, Rizzi has a 2-1 record, with the only loss coming last weekend against the Rams. The Saints have struggled to recover from losses this season, including a seven-game losing streak.

If Rizzi can turn the team around, he may have a strong case to keep the head coaching job.

“We still got things to play for. We’ve still got opportunities ahead of us,” said quarterback Derek Carr.

On the other hand, the Giants are simply hoping to win, as they haven’t won since October 6 against Seattle. Their franchise record for consecutive losses is nine, which has happened three times, most recently in 2019.

“You can’t really do anything about it now,” said rookie Malik Nabers, who leads the Giants with 75 receptions. “The record is the record. But you can still focus on moving forward.”

Roman and Herbert aim to get the Chargers’ offense back in sync ahead of their upcoming game in Kansas City

Greg Roman has faced a lot of criticism in his first year as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.

With his offense struggling to score touchdowns in the past two and a half games, Roman took responsibility for improving things before Sunday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, a rival in the AFC West.

“I have to do a better job of giving Justin (Herbert) some better stuff and a better opportunity to do what he can do,” Roman said on Thursday.

Last Sunday, the Chargers won 17-13 against Atlanta, but it was the second time this season that their offense didn’t score a touchdown. Even more concerning, they only gained 187 total yards, their lowest in a win since a 177-yard performance in a 23-21 victory over Indianapolis in Week 10 of the 2007 season.

The Chargers (8-5) have scored on 10 of their last 27 drives, with seven field goals and three touchdowns, and they have reached the red zone only four times. Four of Cameron Dicker’s field goals have been from at least 51 yards.

There have also been seven three-and-outs and two turnovers that led to touchdowns for the other team.

“We were disjointed overall. A lot of things to clean up,” Roman said. One area where the Chargers need to improve quickly is the running game.

Los Angeles Chargers players celebrates a touchdown in the 1st half

After J.K. Dobbins was placed on injured reserve following a knee injury against Baltimore on November 25, the Chargers averaged only 3.3 yards per carry against Atlanta and finished with just 56 rushing yards, their second fewest this season.

Gus Edwards averaged 5.3 yards per carry but only had the ball six times.

“I have to do a better job of game-planning and calling the run game. That’s part of it,” Roman said. “It’s also just us playing in sync. When we do it right, we’re pretty damn good. It’s a lot of different things. Some communication errors but we addressed it and learned from it.”

The Chargers have also struggled against man coverage recently, which is concerning with the Chiefs playing a lot of man defense. Kansas City has used man coverage on 171 designed pass plays, the sixth-highest total in the league.

The Chargers do have one advantage compared to their first meeting with the Chiefs: a healthy Justin Herbert. The fifth-year quarterback was playing with a sprained right ankle in that game, which affected his mobility.

Left tackle Rashawn Slater and rookie right tackle Joe Alt also missed that September 29 game due to injuries. The Chargers scored on their first two drives before the Chiefs came back for a 17-10 win.

Los Angeles has a new injury concern, though. Wide receiver Ladd McConkey has been limited the last two days due to shoulder and knee issues.

“I wouldn’t say the preparation changes too much. You can rely more on the film from earlier in the year already having played them,” said Herbert, who passed for 179 yards in the first meeting. “I think we’ve grown and gotten better (since the first meeting). There are definitely things we can continue to clean up and fix, but I think we’ve come a long way.”

Drew Lock will be the starting quarterback for the Giants in their game against the Saints

With Tommy DeVito still struggling with a sore forearm, Drew Lock will start at quarterback for the Giants for the second game in a row when they face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Coach Brian Daboll announced the decision on Wednesday, mentioning that Lock showed some positive moments in the loss to Dallas on Thanksgiving and will take all the first-team snaps.

“I think the reps help a ton,” Lock said on Wednesday. “I’d say anybody in this position would say the same thing. Getting back out there, letting them hear your cadence, letting them hear you calling it in the huddle, rhythm and timing with the receivers, even rhythm and timing for me with my feet on certain plays, whatever we’ve got up this week, it helps tremendously.”

Lock completed 21 of 32 passes for 178 yards and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown against Dallas. However, he also ran for a career-high 57 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown run, and set up Tyrone Tracy’s short TD run with a 28-yard scramble.

DeVito was injured in his first start after replacing Daniel Jones in the game against Tampa Bay on Nov. 24. He missed the Dallas game and was limited in practice on Wednesday. Daboll said it’s unclear whether DeVito will be able to serve as the backup on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, where the Giants (2-10) have not won in six home games.

New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons players in the 1st half

If DeVito can’t go, Tim Boyle, who was recently signed, would serve as the backup against the Saints (4-8).

The Giants have had three different quarterbacks start over the past three games.

“It’s professional football,” said Lock, who started against Dallas without any practice due to the short turnaround before that game. “You expect roller coasters here and there. But, just excited to be able to go out and play one more time and get to practice with these guys, let them feel my energy a little bit.”

Lock, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, was Jones’ backup for the first 10 games. When Daboll benched Jones after a 2-8 start, DeVito was chosen over Lock because DeVito had sparked the team to a three-game winning streak last season with both Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor injured.

DeVito hurt his right forearm late in a 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers, and Lock got the opportunity to play.

New York is also dealing with several injuries this week. Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (elbow) and rookie tight end Theo Johnson (foot surgery) were placed on injured reserve on Monday.

Defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (neck/shoulder), left tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (quad), right tackle Evan Neal (hip), inside linebacker Bobby Okereke (back), and cornerback Deonte Banks (rib) are all considered week-to-week.

Aaron Rodgers calls it “absurd” to believe that he needs the last five games to demonstrate his worth to the Jets

Aaron Rodgers believes his football career speaks for itself.

The New York Jets quarterback doesn’t feel the need to use the final games of the season to prove his worth to the team or show that he should return next year. He thinks it’s “ridiculous” to think that way.

“If they want me to stay, fantastic,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “If it takes these five games, maybe they don’t know what I bring to the table.

“But that being said I’d love to play really friggin’ well the last five games.”

Rodgers, who turned 41 on Monday, has faced challenges with both his performance and injuries while the Jets have started the season with a 3-9 record.

He has struggled with leg injuries, including a sprained ankle, a sore knee, and a tweaked hamstring, throughout the season. However, after the bye week, he felt healthier than he had in weeks. Despite that, he was inconsistent in a 26-21 loss to Seattle and couldn’t lead the Jets to a winning drive on their final possession.

Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers (NFL)

Some people thought the Jets might bench Rodgers in favor of Tyrod Taylor to try to boost the offense. But instead, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Rodgers would remain the starting quarterback as long as he’s healthy. Rodgers also said during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday that his goal is to finish the season playing on the field, even though the team has a poor record.

“That’s what you do when you’re a professional and the most important ability you can have is availability, which I wasn’t available last year,” Rodgers said Wednesday, referring to his torn Achilles tendon injury just four snaps into his Jets debut. “So I’d love to play the games and I love playing football. I’m hyper-competitive and I love to be out there with the guys.”

He didn’t use his injuries as an excuse for his subpar performance this season, saying he feels healthy enough to play when he’s on the field. Though Rodgers has thrown for 2,627 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, his 6.3 yards-per-pass attempt is the lowest of his career as a starter.

Rodgers had mentioned a few weeks ago that he would like to play next year but recently said he wasn’t sure. He said his health would be a big factor in his decision. If he chooses to play in 2025, the Jets would be his first choice.

There’s uncertainty about whether the Jets will want him back next season as they look to rebuild with a new general manager and coach after the firings of Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh. Rodgers said some people have told him they hope he’ll return, but “not the people who are making those decisions.”

That comment got a few laughs, but Rodgers said there would be discussions at some point to figure out his next move.

“I just redid my house here in Jersey,” Rodgers said. “My goal was to play a few more years here, but we’ll see. I’d like to be healthy, I’d like to end on my feet and then I’d like to play well and I’d like to feel like I’m wanted back. If not, again, I will not be offended. I won’t be upset. I’ll be so thankful, either way whatever happens here.

“But I’ve got to be healthy mentally, physically, and then there’s got to be interest on both sides. And if that’s not the case, then I’ll look at other options. But first, I’ll think about whether I’d actually want to play or not, but it usually takes a good month to get away from it, which I’ll do the first month and then we’ll see what happens.”

Aaron Rodgers reacts in the 4th quarter

During his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers spoke about the Detroit Lions, who were 3-13-1 in Dan Campbell’s first year as coach in 2021, but are now tied with Kansas City for the best record in the NFL at 11-1. He pointed to the Lions’ success as an example of a team that benefited from patient and supportive ownership.

After practice Wednesday, Rodgers was asked about his comments and whether he thinks the Jets have been similarly supportive.

“Is that a rhetorical question?” he responded before explaining he was just giving an example. He also mentioned seeing both support and lack of it during his 18 years in Green Bay.

When asked if he felt there was support from Jets ownership, Rodgers said: “I’d have to look. I don’t follow a lot of stuff. I’d have to ask you guys: Has there been a lot of public, supportive comments?”

A reporter mentioned the Jets’ coach and GM firings.

“Yeah,” Rodgers said, “so there’s your answer.”

Miami coach Mario Cristobal made his case for the College Football Playoff, but the committee had a different perspective

Miami coach Mario Cristobal presented his case for the College Football Playoff on Tuesday morning, urging the selection committee to focus on “the facts” when deciding if the Hurricanes deserve one of the 12 playoff spots.

However, the committee had a different view, and it seems Miami won’t make the playoff.

The Hurricanes (No. 14 AP, 10-2, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) were ranked 12th in the latest CFP rankings on Tuesday night, falling behind Alabama, which has three losses. Right now, Alabama is projected to get the final at-large spot in the 12-team playoff.

“Any team that is not playing right now, we don’t have a data point to rearrange where we have those teams ranked,” said Warde Manuel, the chairman of the CFP selection committee and athletic director at Michigan, on ESPN. “And so, that is set in terms of how we see them. … There’s nothing that’s going to change.”

This means that Miami, Mississippi, and South Carolina — ranked 12th, 13th, and 14th respectively — are unlikely to make the playoff since none of these teams will have a chance to improve their position by playing another game.

One of Miami’s arguments for making the playoff was that their two losses were by a total of nine points — a 28-23 loss to Georgia Tech (which finished 7-5) and a 42-38 loss to Syracuse (which ended 9-3). In contrast, Alabama had a 24-3 loss to Oklahoma, which finished 6-6.

“We won 10 games this year and not many teams have,” Cristobal said on WQAM, the Hurricanes’ flagship station. “And in our losses, those losses came down to one possession. That’s a very different resume than the 9-3 teams.”

Mario Cristobal and Cam Ward in the 1st half

This weekend’s conference championship games — including Clemson vs. SMU in the ACC, UNLV vs. Boise State in the Mountain West, Iowa State vs. Arizona State in the Big 12, Georgia vs. Texas in the SEC, and Penn State vs. Oregon in the Big Ten — will play a key role in deciding which teams make the playoff. However, Manuel said that teams not playing won’t see their ranking improve.

Clemson is ranked No. 17 in the CFP rankings, and if they beat SMU, they will take the ACC’s guaranteed spot in the playoff. But that won’t help Miami or any other team currently outside the playoff picture.

“The awards should go to the teams that are actually winning the games, not the ones that are politicking themselves out of losses,” Cristobal said.

Miami also argued that their season included a strong win over Florida, that they lead the nation in yards and points per game, and that Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Cam Ward led the nation with 36 touchdown passes. They were undefeated at home, and their two losses were close, by a combined nine points.

However, criticisms of Miami’s season include the fact that they did not face any ranked teams during those weeks and that their defense allowed at least 31 points in five of their last eight games.

Despite these defensive struggles, Miami finished the regular season as one of seven teams in the top 25 nationally in both yards per game and yards allowed per game, alongside teams like Indiana, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, and Texas.

“Go to the facts,” Cristobal said just hours before the rankings were announced. “Award football teams for winning football games.”

Miami’s chances of making the playoffs take a hit as Alabama climbs in the newest College Football Playoff rankings

Miami’s hopes for making the playoffs took a big hit, while Alabama’s chances improved in the latest rankings before the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket is revealed next weekend.

The Hurricanes (10-2) dropped six spots to No. 12, which is just outside the projected playoff field after their second loss of the season. They now sit one spot behind the Crimson Tide (9-3), who moved up two spots to No. 11 after winning last week. Alabama is currently the last team in the playoff bracket and the fourth from the Southeastern Conference.

To make matters worse for Miami, selection committee chair and Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said the Hurricanes can’t jump over Alabama since neither team plays next weekend. There is little chance for Miami to move up based on the results of conference title games.

This Miami-Alabama situation showed that the selection committee is considering more than just wins and losses. Strength of schedule and other factors seem to give the SEC an edge.

“We still think Miami is a very strong team,” Manuel said. “It came down to a difference in their body of work… not just wins, not just losses but the totality of the season and how those teams performed.”

Manuel pointed out three key factors: Alabama is 3-1 against current Top 25 teams, while Miami is 0-1; Alabama has a 6-1 record against winning teams, while Miami is 4-2; and Miami has lost two of its last three games.

Oregon held onto the No. 1 spot for the fifth straight week and will head into Saturday’s Big Ten title game against Penn State as the only undefeated team in major college football.

Dominic Lovett in the 2nd half

The matchups for the first-ever 12-team playoff will be determined on Sunday, the day after the conference title games. The playoffs begin on Dec. 20, with the championship game set for Jan. 20 in Atlanta.

After losing to Michigan, Ohio State dropped four spots to No. 6, while Texas moved up to No. 2, Penn State to No. 3, Notre Dame to No. 4, and Georgia to No. 5.

The selection committee has essentially confirmed the Big 12 will only have one team in the playoffs, with Arizona State and Iowa State moving up to Nos. 15 and 16, respectively.

The top five ranked conference champions are guaranteed playoff spots, meaning the winner of the Big 12 title game will be in the playoffs, even if they don’t reach the top 12, which hurts Miami’s chances further.

SMU, on a nine-game winning streak, moved up to No. 8, making them the highest-ranked team from the Atlantic Coast Conference. However, they are still at risk of dropping out if they lose the title game to No. 17 Clemson.

The drama this week mostly centers around the SEC. Alabama, just two weeks removed from a tough 24-3 loss to Oklahoma, still received better treatment than Miami, who lost 42-38 at Syracuse last week with a chance to play in the ACC title game on the line.

Other teams ranked this week include Mississippi at No. 13, South Carolina at No. 14, Tennessee at No. 7, Indiana at No. 9, and Boise State at No. 10. The projected bracket includes four teams each from the Big Ten and SEC, one from the ACC, Mountain West, Big 12, and independent Notre Dame.

Dillon Gabriel’s performance at Oregon brings to mind the days of another quarterback from Hawaii, Marcus Mariota

When Dillon Gabriel arrived at Oregon this year, he faced a tough decision.

Gabriel had worn No. 8 at Oklahoma before transferring for his sixth season. However, that number had special meaning at Oregon because it had been worn by Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.

There were many similarities between the two quarterbacks: Both were dual-threat players who had earned many awards, as well as yards and touchdowns. They also both came from Hawaii and were shaped by the island culture.

Mariota had chosen the No. 8 because it represented the number of Hawaiian islands. His helmet’s facemask was also designed in the shape of 808, the area code of Hawaii.

So Gabriel decided to reach out to Mariota for permission. Mariota, who now plays for the NFL’s Washington Commanders, agreed.

Gabriel said, “You know, when you’re growing up and you have that kind of direct example, a guy from Hawaii, playing at a high level, at the DI level, and then you see him go to the NFL, it’s like you can see it, you can believe it.”

Dillon Gabriel warms up before the game

Gabriel has led the top-ranked Ducks (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten) through an undefeated season and into the Big Ten title game on Saturday against No. 4 Penn State (11-1, 8-1) in Indianapolis.

Gabriel, who played his first three years at Central Florida before joining Oklahoma, became the NCAA’s all-time leader in total career touchdowns, with 183, including 149 passing, 33 rushing, and one receiving touchdown. He’s tied with former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix (now with the Denver Broncos) for the FBS record with 61 career starts.

Even though Gabriel has had an incredible career, he remains humble about his achievements. He said, “I think we’re in an interesting time that’s all about results. And so many people talk about the process but aren’t patient enough. I think if you look at my body of work, I’m a guy who’s eager and wants to get better but has had that time to develop and work in that way. I think you see it over time.”

As a Duck, Gabriel has thrown for 3,277 yards and 24 touchdowns in 12 games. He’s also rushed for seven more touchdowns.

Mariota played at Oregon for three years, throwing for 104 touchdowns and running for 29. He was Oregon’s quarterback in the 2014 season, the last time the Ducks played in the national championship game.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning said, “I mean, everybody would love to run out there with the experience that we have at quarterback right now. And I think that experience shows up consistently every Saturday for us. More than anything, just the ability for Dillon to be calm within the chaos that exists in a football game, and being a great decision-maker and understanding the scheme.”

The last time Oregon finished the regular season 12-0 was in 2010, when they played for the BCS national championship.

This season, Oregon had some big wins, including a 32-31 victory at home against Ohio State and a 38-17 win over Michigan at the Big House.

Dillon Gabriel hands off the ball to Jordan James in the 1st half

The Ducks finished the season with a 49-21 victory over rival Washington, finishing 9-0 in their first Big Ten season. Gabriel threw two touchdown passes and ran for another in that game.

Penn State reached the conference title game with a 44-7 victory over Maryland. They also benefited from Ohio State’s 13-10 loss to Michigan in Columbus.

Oregon and Penn State have only played each other once, in the 1995 Rose Bowl. Penn State, led by Joe Paterno, won that game 38-20.

The winner of this weekend’s game will earn a first-round bye in the expanded 12-team playoffs. Both teams are guaranteed a playoff spot, even if they lose.

On Tuesday, Gabriel was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

Lanning praised Gabriel, saying, “He’s earned the trust and the admiration of all his teammates and the coaches around him. This guy prepares extremely hard. He is the calmest dude you’ve ever been around on the field, which is impressive, but I’m really proud of him and what he’s been able to do for this team.”

Barry Odom has No. 19 UNLV on the verge of a possible College Football Playoff spot

Barry Odom had just celebrated one of his biggest victories as a head coach when his mind shifted to the toughest moment of his career.

Five years ago, to the day, Odom was fired by Missouri. He became emotional and paused for a moment as he reflected on that time, thinking about the journey from that low point to leading UNLV to a 38-14 victory over Nevada, securing a spot in the Mountain West Championship game, and giving the team a real chance at the College Football Playoff.

“I’ll never forget that,” Odom said about being let go at Missouri. “You learn from your lessons. You learn from your opportunities. You pick yourself up, you dust yourself off and you go create more.”

At 48, Odom has turned things around at a place where coaches previously struggled. The Rebels, ranked 19th by The Associated Press and 20th by the CFP, will face No. 10 Boise State on Friday night. As the top two teams in the CFP rankings, the winner of this game will represent the Group of Five in the playoffs.

Before Odom took over two years ago, UNLV had only been to four bowl games. Now, the team is heading to back-to-back bowl games for the first time in its history, no matter what happens against Boise State.

Barry Odom in the 1st half

At 10-2, the Rebels have reached double-digit wins for just the third time in the program’s history, and the first time in 40 years when Randall Cunningham, the program’s greatest player, was the quarterback.

UNLV’s success was recognized in the conference awards announced on Tuesday. Linebacker Jackson Woodard was named the top defensive player, wide receiver/punt blocker Ricky White III was named the best special teams player, and kicker Caden Chittenden was named the top freshman.

Odom often credits his players, coaches, support staff, and administration for the team’s success, but he is the one who made many of the key decisions that helped turn things around.

“Him believing in me makes me believe in myself,” said Woodard, who transferred from Arkansas with Odom, who was the Razorbacks’ associate head coach and defensive coordinator. “That’s what I admire about him so much. I haven’t always had that in my career, at least early in my career. That’s why I followed him. Coming here, I didn’t even think about losing. I knew we were going to go win.”

Other coaches who came to UNLV with high hopes in the past failed to turn the program around. However, the three most recent former coaches are now in prominent roles again: Marcus Arroyo is the offensive coordinator at No. 12 Arizona State, Tony Sanchez is the head coach at New Mexico State, and Bobby Hauck is back at Montana, where he became the all-time winningest coach at the FCS school.

Odom could have been just another coach who arrived in Las Vegas with a strong resume but failed to win more than a few games. Instead, he has quickly turned the program around and injected new energy into it.

UNLV attracted crowds of over 40,000 fans to two games this season at Allegiant Stadium and averaged a program-record 32,202 fans for home games. The Rebels have carved out a spot in a city already home to major sports franchises like the NHL’s Golden Knights, the WNBA’s Aces, and the NFL’s Raiders.

Barry Odom watches from the sidelines

“I was concerned,” Odom said. “Was there enough space in Vegas for a college football team? And the answer is a resounding, ‘Absolutely, yes.’ Our team, our players have created that.”

However, this success could also be a problem for UNLV. Odom has surely caught the attention of athletic directors across the country who are looking for a new coach. This puts pressure on UNLV Athletic Director Erick Harper to find a way to keep Odom.

For now, the Rebels are focused on their big game against Boise State and possibly the playoffs.

Their season could have been derailed when quarterback Matthew Sluka left the program after three games due to an issue involving name, image, and likeness rights. But Odom’s steady leadership, attention to detail, and trust in Hajj-Malik Williams to step in as quarterback helped the Rebels stay on track.

“He talks about habits, and those things can be overlooked as not being important,” Williams said. “But when you really focus on your habits, when you look up, you have opportunities like we have now.”

After a 10-game winning streak, the Lions take on the Packers with plenty still to achieve

The Detroit Lions have matched the franchise record for most consecutive wins and are currently in first place in the NFC standings.

However, there are still challenges ahead for them to stay on top. Even the NFC North division is still up for grabs, and the Lions will look to create more distance when they host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

The Lions (11-1), who have won 10 games in a row, haven’t managed to separate themselves from Minnesota (10-2) or Green Bay (9-3). Detroit will face Minnesota, which has won five straight games, in the regular season’s final game next month.

The Packers have stayed competitive by winning seven of their last eight games, with their only loss coming at the hands of the Lions. Detroit led by 21 points early in the third quarter and held on to win 24-14.

Lions coach Dan Campbell says the real challenge begins now.

“The best part of all this — we’re in playoff football right now, that’s where we’re at,” he said. “We’re in December, and our schedule reflects that. We’re facing tough opponents one after another, so this is the kind of challenge that prepares you for the playoffs. We’re a tough team, and nothing’s going to change that. We just need to focus on the next game in front of us.”

Detroit is coming off a 23-20 win over Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, where they almost blew a 16-point lead. The Bears’ poor clock management prevented them from tying the game, which led to coach Matt Eberflus being fired.

The Lions have been dealing with several injuries, especially on defense. They signed four players over the past week to strengthen their roster.

“I know the big topic is all the injuries on the defensive side,” defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn said. “But our personnel staff does a great job of bringing in players who fit our style. It’s not the playbook that matters most for these guys to learn. It’s the style of play we have, and that’s easy for them to pick up.”

Jared Goff has thrown six touchdowns and no interceptions in the last three games after throwing five picks against the Houston Texans on November 10.

The Packers also played on Thanksgiving, beating Miami 30-17. Green Bay built a 24-3 halftime lead with two touchdown passes from Jordan Love to Jayden Reed.

Now, the Packers face a Detroit team that has won five of the last six matchups between the two teams.

“With most good teams, they play the game the right way,” Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said. “Detroit has been doing that for the last few years. That’s who they are, and that’s who we are too. It should be a great game Thursday night.”

The Packers may need to win in a high-scoring game, as the Lions lead the league in scoring with an average of 31.9 points per game (Green Bay ranks eighth at 26.5 points). Stopping the Lions’ running game will be important, according to LaFleur.

“They’ve got two very dynamic running backs. (David) Montgomery is a physical runner, and (Jahmyr) Gibbs can break off long runs,” he said. “Jared (Goff) is playing at an MVP level, so they have a really powerful offense.”

Lions offensive tackle Taylor Decker (knee) and three defensive linemen — DJ Reader (shoulder), Josh Paschal (knee), and Levi Onwuzurike (hamstring) — missed practice on Tuesday.

For the Packers, offensive guard Elgton Jenkins (knee), linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring), and cornerback Corey Ballentine (knee) also missed practice.

New Rangers catcher Kyle Higashioka has already experienced a no-hitter and a major home run

Kyle Higashioka has had some memorable experiences at the Texas Rangers’ home stadium. He caught a no-hitter there and hit a home run on the same day Aaron Judge set the American League season record with his 62nd home run.

Now, Higashioka will be playing at Globe Life Park regularly after signing a two-year, $13.5 million contract with the Rangers. They want to pair the 34-year-old catcher with All-Star and Gold Glove winner Jonah Heim.

“So many good memories have happened for me personally in this ballpark. It’s like I would always look forward to coming here every year,” Higashioka said on Tuesday, the day after his deal with Texas was announced. “It’s funny that I’m actually going to be on the team. … Hopefully ready to make some more (memories).”

Higashioka spent his first 16 professional seasons with the New York Yankees, including his first seven seasons in the major leagues. He is coming off his only season with San Diego, where he hit .220 with career-highs of 17 home runs and 45 RBIs while playing 84 games for the Padres. San Diego had acquired him from the Yankees in a trade last December that sent Juan Soto to New York.

Higashioka became the Padres’ primary catcher during the second half of the season and played through a playoff run that ended in the National League Division Series against the eventual World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I settled into a pretty good rhythm there and was able to get the bat going a little bit,” he said.

Texas will pay Higashioka $5.75 million in 2025 and $6.75 million in 2026. The contract includes a mutual option for 2027 worth $7 million, with a $1 million buyout. Higashioka could also earn a $250,000 performance bonus in any season where he plays 81 games.

“We see it as a situation where him and Jonah are going to complement one another, more of a timeshare to equal playing time,” Rangers general manager Ross Fenstermaker said. “I think a lot of that will be driven by performance, but I think they both offer some unique traits and have their own abilities.”

Higashioka was the Yankees’ catcher when Corey Kluber threw a no-hitter against the Rangers on May 19, 2021. He was also behind the plate when New York’s Domingo Germán pitched a perfect game at Oakland on June 28, 2023.

Among only 13 men to catch both a perfect game and a no-hitter, Higashioka was with the Yankees during Aaron Judge’s record-setting 2022 season. Judge broke Roger Maris’ American League record with his 62nd home run on October 4, the second-to-last day of the regular season. Higashioka had hit a home run in the first game of that doubleheader.

Jonah Heim, who is a switch-hitter, was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in 2023 when the Rangers won their first World Series title. Heim played 131 games in each of the last two seasons. He hit .258 with 18 home runs and 95 RBIs during their championship season but dropped to .220 with 13 home runs and 59 RBIs this year.

“We have a lot of confidence that he’s going to bounce back and be an All-Star type catcher for us,” Fenstermaker said. “We’re looking forward to complementing him with somebody like Kyle, who I think will help elevate and create one of the better catching tandems in the game.”
