Nick Chubb’s Exit Closes a Defining Chapter in Cleveland Browns History

Nick Chubb’s legacy with the Cleveland Browns extends far beyond statistics or highlight reels. He’s not only one of the best modern-era players but firmly belongs in the conversation of all-time Browns greats, regardless of position.

His career with the team embodied a rare combination of power, explosiveness, and humility, making him a beloved figure in Cleveland. Calls for a statue in his honor—featuring his trademark monstrous physique and broken tackles—are more than just fan sentiment; they’re recognition of a franchise icon.

Despite the emotional bond between Chubb and Browns fans, the end of his Cleveland tenure came quietly, though not painlessly. News of his one-year deal with the Houston Texans disappointed many, even if it wasn’t shocking.

Given the severe knee injury he suffered in 2023 and a subsequent foot injury that halted his 2024 comeback, seeing Chubb suit up again in any uniform is a testament to his resilience. The Browns supported him through recovery but ultimately chose to move forward.

Browns Rebuild Post-Watson Trade as Chubb’s Era Ends with Grace and Impact

Chubb’s departure coincides with the Browns confronting the fallout from their ill-fated Deshaun Watson trade and a need to recalibrate the roster. Though painful, the decision to let Chubb enter true free agency is defensible. At nearly 30 and playing a physically punishing position, his time was nearing its natural close. The team has invested in younger running backs like Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson to carry the torch in a new era.

Chubb’s arrival in 2018 symbolized the Browns’ transition out of a historic slump. His early flashes of brilliance—like the three-carry, 105-yard game in Oakland—quickly made him indispensable. He wasn’t flashy off the field, but his powerful, efficient running style helped Cleveland finally return to playoff contention. With 30 games over 100 yards and four straight 1,000-yard seasons, Chubb was the foundation of the Browns’ offensive success.

Chubb’s Team-First Mentality Defined His Legacy and Elevated the Cleveland Browns Franchise

One of the most admirable qualities about Chubb was his team-first mentality. Never one to chase stats or headlines, he consistently credited teammates and made smart football decisions—like stepping out of bounds instead of scoring to seal a win.

He earned universal respect from teammates and coaches, including head coach Kevin Stefanski, who frequently praised Chubb’s work ethic and leadership. His ability to keep things simple yet effective made him a model for what a franchise player should be.

Now headed to Houston, Chubb’s career arc has a poetic angle: Cleveland originally acquired the draft pick used to select him from Houston in a 2017 trade. While fans may cringe at more recent Texans-Browns history, that bit of symmetry underlines the unpredictable nature of the NFL.

In the end, Chubb’s Browns legacy remains intact, built on consistency, selflessness, and unmatched physicality. He didn’t just represent the team; he elevated it, and his departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Cleveland football history.

Chubb fractures his foot, adding to his troubles after suffering a season-ending knee injury in 2023

Nick Chubb faces another setback.

Cleveland’s star running back, who showed great determination returning after a serious knee injury last season, broke his left foot in the third quarter of Sunday’s 21-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chubb left the field at Huntington Bank Field wearing a walking boot and using crutches, which was a worrying sight for coaches, teammates, and fans.

Former Browns running back Kareem Hunt, who became close with Chubb during their time together, was shocked by the news.

“That is insane. I didn’t even know that,” Hunt said after rushing for 45 yards on 13 carries. “I’m going to pray for him, man. It’s been a tough journey for him to get back, but if anybody can overcome it and bounce back, it’s him.”

Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett, who was briefly out with an eye injury in the first half, was heartbroken for Chubb.

“It just goes from bad to worse, man,” Garrett said. “The man fights back from injury. He does it. There’s not a more hard-working, resilient individual in the locker room. And he has continued to face adversity like this.”

It is unclear exactly when Chubb got hurt. He ran for 8 yards on a carry early in the third quarter, just minutes after he had a ball go off his hands for an interception. On Cleveland’s next possession, Chubb fumbled when Kansas City linebacker Leo Chanel knocked the ball loose.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski thought Chubb might have been stepped on.

It has been a tough season in Cleveland, with Chubb’s return being one of the only bright spots.

Chubb’s 2023 season ended in Week 2, when he suffered a serious injury to the same knee he hurt in college at Georgia. His injuries were so severe that he required two separate surgeries to repair torn ligaments, his meniscus, and medial capsule.

But in typical fashion, Chubb pushed himself to his limits in rehab and returned earlier than expected. He made his season debut in Week 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I have gotten to have a first-row seat to what he has been able to do,” Stefanski said. “I can’t tell you how much I respect him as a person, what he means to this football team. I know this is just another obstacle that he will overcome.”

While he hasn’t shown the same burst or breakaway speed that made him one of the NFL’s top running backs, Chubb, who has rushed for 6,843 yards since 2018, had been adamant this week that he didn’t want to shut down his season to prepare for 2025.

Now, he’s hurt again, and Chubb’s future is uncertain.

The four-time Pro Bowler is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. He has said he wants to finish his career with the Browns, who drafted him in the second round six years ago.

“It’s tough to see because he’s one of the cornerstones,” Garrett said. “He’s every bit a part of the foundation as myself and Denzel (Ward). We want to be there for him in every way possible, but it’s a real freaking shame.”
