Jake Guentzel continues his strong play as the Lightning defeat the Kraken

Jake Guentzel scored for the sixth game in a row and also added an assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning won 5-1 against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday night.

Brandon Hagel scored two goals, Brayden Point had a goal and an assist, Nikita Kucherov recorded two assists, and Declan Carlile, called up earlier in the day, scored his first NHL goal. Goaltender Jonas Johansson made 21 saves in his first game since November 29. The Lightning finished their four-game Western road trip with a 3-1-0 record.

Brandon Montour scored for Seattle, which lost for only the second time in regulation in its last seven games (4-2-1). Philipp Grubauer stopped 26 of 30 shots.

Leading 2-1, the Lightning sealed the victory with three goals in the third period.

The first came on the power play at 4:03. Point’s shot from the high slot was deflected by defenseman Will Borgen. The puck floated toward the net and Guentzel tipped it past Grubauer’s pads.

Hagel added an empty-net goal at 16:08, and Carlile scored with a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle at 19:38.

Seattle Kraken (NHL)

Seattle opened the scoring on the power play at 4:24 of the first period when Montour’s blast from the blue line beat Johansson, who was screened.

During the first TV timeout, Lightning coach Jon Cooper gave a motivating speech to his team, which had been outshot 7-0 until then. The team responded by tying the game soon after.

Tampa Bay dumped the puck into the corner, won the race to it, and sent it back to Nick Perbix at the top of the faceoff circle. Perbix floated the puck toward the net, and Hagel tipped it past Grubauer at 8:16.

The Lightning took the lead at 13:21. Grubauer made a kick save on Darren Raddysh’s shot, but the rebound ended up in the low slot. Point poked the puck between Grubauer’s pads for his 20th goal.

Defenseman Victor Hedman missed his second consecutive game with a lower-body injury, even though he participated in the morning skate. Seattle forward Yanni Gourde, who won two Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay before being picked by the Kraken in the 2021 expansion draft, missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury.

Kraken deliver another blowout defeat to Bruins

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored two goals, and Philipp Grubauer made 33 saves to help the Seattle Kraken defeat the Boston Bruins 5-1 on Thursday night.

Jared McCann had one goal and one assist, while Jaden Schwartz and Vince Dunn also scored for the Kraken, who have won four of their last six games. Shane Wright contributed two assists.

Brad Marchand scored a penalty shot for the Bruins, who have now lost their first two games on a five-game Western road trip by a combined score of 13-2. Joonas Korpisalo saved 16 of 20 shots.

Bjorkstrand and Schwartz both scored their 50th goals for the Kraken in the first period.

Seattle started strong with a four-minute power play early in the game after Boston’s David Pastrnak was penalized for high-sticking Jamie Oleksiak just 16 seconds into the match. Bjorkstrand scored eight seconds later, tipping a shot from Matty Beniers past Korpisalo.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

Though the Bruins killed off the second part of Pastrnak’s penalty, Seattle got another chance when Tyler Johnson tripped Will Borgen at 3:10. After that penalty ended, Schwartz won a puck battle in the corner, skated to the net, and scored with a backhand shot over Korpisalo’s shoulder.

The Bruins got on the scoreboard midway through the second period. After a scramble in front of the net, Seattle’s Brandon Montour prevented the puck from crossing the goal line by catching it in the crease. Marchand took advantage of a fake shot to score a backhand goal past Grubauer.

The Kraken extended their lead with three goals in the third period. Dunn scored by batting a puck out of the air at 3:07, Bjorkstrand scored again at 9:16 with a shot that hit the right post, and McCann added an empty-net goal at 18:06.

Bruins center Elias Lindholm didn’t return in the third period due to an upper-body injury.

Aleksander Barkov leads Panthers to shootout win over Kraken

Aleksander Barkov scored once in regulation and again in a shootout to help the Florida Panthers win 2-1 against the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night, starting their five-game road trip with a victory.

Barkov and Sam Reinhart both scored in the shootout for the Panthers, while Eeli Tolvanen and Oliver Bjorkstrand’s attempts for the Kraken were stopped by Sergei Bobrovsky.

Bobrovsky made 17 saves in regulation and overtime as the defending Stanley Cup champions extended their points streak to seven games (6-0-1).

Chandler Stephenson scored for Seattle in regulation, and Joey Daccord stopped 32 of 33 shots. Daccord returned after missing Seattle’s 7-5 win over the New York Rangers on Sunday due to illness.

In the final minute of overtime, Seattle had two breakaways but couldn’t score. Shane Wright missed to the right on the first attempt, and Bjorkstrand hit the side of the net with 6.9 seconds left after Bobrovsky blocked the angle.

Seattle Kraken and New York Islanders

Seattle scored first at 15:39 of the first period when Yanni Gourde passed to Stephenson for a breakaway. Stephenson skated down the middle of the ice and beat Bobrovsky with a wrist shot to the glove side. It was just Stephenson’s third goal of the season. Jared McCann recorded his 100th assist with the Kraken on the play.

Late in the second period, Gourde had another breakaway but was stopped by Nate Schmidt, who lifted his stick from behind. The Seattle bench asked for a slashing penalty, but none was called, and Gourde played limited minutes for the rest of the game due to a lower-body injury.

Florida quickly took advantage and tied the game when Barkov scored on a one-timer from just inside the right faceoff circle at 18:59. Reinhart set him up with a cross-ice pass, and Barkov’s shot sailed over Daccord’s shoulder as the goalie tried to scramble across the crease.

Kraken come from behind to defeat struggling Rangers in a high-scoring showdown

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored two goals and had two assists as the Seattle Kraken came back from a two-goal deficit to beat the New York Rangers 7-5 on Sunday afternoon.

Eeli Tolvanen added a goal and two assists, and Shane Wright contributed one goal and one assist for Seattle, which finished a 3-1-0 road trip and won against the Rangers for the second time in franchise history (2-6-0).

Brandon Tanev, Vince Dunn, and Yanni Gourde also scored for Seattle, while Chandler Stephenson and Matty Beniers each had two assists. Philipp Grubauer, who started in goal because Joey Daccord was sick, made 32 saves, earning his first win in his last seven decisions since October 17.

K’Andre Miller and Vincent Trocheck each had a goal and an assist, and Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin each recorded two assists for the Rangers, who have lost seven of their last nine games.

Reilly Smith, Filip Chytil, and Alexis Lafreniere also scored for New York. Jonathan Quick, starting because Igor Shesterkin was out due to his wife going into labor, saved 15 of 21 shots. Quick had shut out the Kraken 2-0 on November 17 in Seattle.

Seattle Kraken (NHL)

After falling behind 3-1, the Kraken scored three goals in 5:18 late in the second period to take the lead. Tanev scored at 14:06, Tolvanen at 15:34, and Bjorkstrand tipped in a shot from Brandon Montour at 19:24 to give Seattle a 4-3 lead.

Seattle added to its lead in the third period, with Dunn scoring a powerful shot from the right point just 1:00 in, and Wright scoring at 11:13 to make it 6-3.

The Rangers fought back as Miller scored at 12:27 and Lafreniere at 14:57 to cut the Kraken’s lead to one goal.

Gourde sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 18:14.

The Rangers scored the first goal of the game as Miller’s shot from the left point went between Grubauer’s pads, and Smith was there to tap it in at 3:38.

Bjorkstrand tied the game with a power-play goal at 1:46 of the second period.

Chytil scored at 2:50 of the second, and Trocheck added a power-play goal at 4:47, giving the Rangers a 3-1 lead.

The Kraken came out strong and defeated the Islanders with a solid performance

Vince Dunn had a goal and two assists on Thursday night as the Seattle Kraken defeated the New York Islanders 5-2 in Elmont, N.Y.

Tye Kartye and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored in the first period, while Dunn and Shane Wright added goals in the second. Jaden Schwartz scored an empty-net goal in the third period to seal the win for the Kraken, who have now won the first two games of their four-game Eastern Conference road trip. Dunn assisted on both of the first-period goals.

Goaltender Joey Daccord held a shutout into the third period, finishing with 27 saves.

The Islanders, who have now lost 10 of their last 13 games, scored twice in the third period with goals from Noah Dobson and Maxim Tsyplakov. Ilya Sorokin made nine saves before being pulled after two periods, with Marcus Hogberg coming in and stopping all 11 shots he faced in his first NHL game since April 2021.

New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres

Kartye opened the scoring just 2:48 into the game when Dunn’s shot from between the blue line and the left faceoff circle deflected off Kartye’s stick and went under Sorokin’s glove. The Kraken doubled their lead with 3:02 left in the first period on a power-play goal. Dunn’s shot from above the left faceoff circle was tipped by Bjorkstrand and slipped under Sorokin’s arm.

Dunn added a goal in the second period when his shot from the left slot went over Sorokin’s shoulder, helped by a screen from Yanni Gourde. Wright scored another power-play goal with 6:55 left in the second, sending a shot under defenseman Scott Mayfield and past Sorokin after a pass from Brandon Montour.

Dobson broke Daccord’s shutout with a second-chance goal 8:03 into the third period. Tsyplakov made it 4-2 by scoring on a rebound with 4:23 left. Schwartz’s empty-net goal with 2:40 remaining ended the Islanders’ comeback attempt.

Kraken gaining confidence as Islanders struggle to close games

The Seattle Kraken played their best game of the season on Tuesday, while the New York Islanders struggled once again to finish strong.

The Kraken will look to build on their victory, while the Islanders will try to fix their issues with closing games when they meet on Thursday night in Elmont, N.Y.

Both teams had a day off on Wednesday after playing on the road the night before. The Kraken defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2, while the Islanders lost to the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 in overtime.

The win broke a three-game losing streak for the Kraken, who had lost once to Anaheim and twice to San Jose—teams that were behind Seattle in the Pacific Division standings entering play on Wednesday. During that losing streak, the Kraken were outscored 17-9.

However, the Kraken started their four-game East Coast road trip strong, never trailing against the Hurricanes, who have made the playoffs for the past six seasons.

Jaden Schwartz scored just 19 seconds after the game started, and Eeli Tolvanen gave Seattle a 2-1 lead with a goal at 5:56 of the second period. After Carolina tied the game, Yanni Gourde and Brandon Tanev each scored in a span of less than five minutes late in the third period.

Edmonton Oilers and New York Islanders

The Kraken outshot the Hurricanes 28-19 and allowed just seven shots in the first two periods. Carolina entered Wednesday with the fifth-most goals (93) in the NHL and was second in shots (810).

Tuesday’s win was the Kraken’s first victory in a game where they never trailed since Nov. 20, when they shut out the Nashville Predators 3-0.

“It takes a 60-minute effort to beat a Carolina team,” Seattle coach Dan Bylsma said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I thought the battle and compete all game long, giving that team (19) shots in the game — five in the first, two in the second, that’s not something that happens very often. That was probably our best 60 of the year.”

For the Islanders, a rare uneventful and scoreless third period was followed by another tough loss in overtime. This was their seventh loss when leading in the third period, which is the most in the NHL.

Islanders center Bo Horvat had a chance to finish off a two-on-one opportunity, but a pass into the crease from Canadiens center Nick Suzuki bounced off Horvat’s skate and back to Suzuki, who scored on a backhand to beat goaltender Ilya Sorokin.

“He just shot it, hit my skate and it went right back to him,” Horvat said. “Yeah it (stinks). I was in the right spot to get the rebound and it just took a (expletive) hop on me and ended up in the back of the net. That’s the way it’s going.”

The Islanders have lost a third-period lead in seven of their 17 losses. Tuesday marked the third time they lost a game that was tied in the third period.

New York has outscored its opponents 43-32 in the first two periods, but they’ve been outscored 44-22 in the third period and beyond.

Kraken net two goals in the third period to rally past the Hurricanes

Jaden Schwartz and Yanni Gourde each contributed a goal and an assist as the Seattle Kraken beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 on Tuesday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Eeli Tolvanen and Brandon Tanev also scored, and Matty Beniers had two assists for the Kraken, who ended a three-game losing streak. Goalie Joey Daccord made 15 saves.

For the Hurricanes, Martin Necas scored a goal and had an assist, and Eric Robinson also scored. Pyotr Kochetkov, back after missing four games with a concussion, stopped 25 of 29 shots.

Gourde scored the go-ahead goal at 10:48 in the third period. He received a pass from Schwartz and deflected the puck past Kochetkov into the net just inside the left post.

Tanev added a breakaway goal at 15:03 to seal the win.

The Hurricanes tied the game at 2-2 on a power play at 5:43 of the third. Sebastian Aho passed to Necas, who made a move to the net and slid the puck between Daccord’s legs.

San Jose Sharks and Seattle Kraken

Carolina seemed to take the lead at 10:02 when Jack Drury scored on a sharp-angled shot. However, the Kraken challenged the goal for goaltender interference, and after video review, it was ruled that Robinson had bumped into Daccord, causing the goal to be disallowed.

Seattle took the lead just 19 seconds into the game thanks to their new second line of Gourde, Beniers, and Schwartz. Beniers forced a turnover in the Kraken’s defensive zone, passed to Gourde, and then Gourde fed Schwartz, who split two defenders and scored past Kochetkov before sliding into the boards.

The Hurricanes tied it at 4:56 when Necas intercepted a poor pass from the Kraken and passed to Robinson, who scored from in front of the net, just inside the left post.

Seattle regained the lead at 5:56 of the second when Tolvanen scored off a rebound after Kochetkov stopped Oliver Bjorkstrand’s shot.

Sharks use three-goal second period to secure another win over Kraken

Luke Kunin, Cody Ceci, and Will Smith scored in the first 10 minutes of the second period, and the San Jose Sharks held on to win 4-2 against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday night.

Mario Ferraro also scored for the Sharks, while Jake Walman and Mikael Granlund each had two assists. Mackenzie Blackwood made 36 saves. This was the Sharks’ second straight win over the Kraken, as they had won 8-5 on Friday in San Jose.

Jaden Schwartz and Jared McCann scored for the Kraken, and Joey Daccord made 19 saves. Seattle has now lost three games in a row, with a combined score of 17-9 in those games.

Ferraro gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 16:54 in the first period. He got a pass from Granlund, skated into the left circle, and shot the puck into the net.

Kunin increased the lead to 2-0 at 1:51 of the second period with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

Seattle Kraken and Nashville Predators

Ceci made it 3-0 at 8:59, scoring his first goal of the season and his first road goal in 128 games. After a shot by Macklin Celebrini missed the net, the puck came off the end boards to Ceci, who swept it into the net from a sharp angle.

Smith added another goal 46 seconds later to make it 4-0 after finishing off an odd-man rush.

The Kraken got on the board at 10:17 of the second period. Matty Beniers took a shot that missed the net and bounced off the end boards. Blackwood tried to poke the puck away, but it went to Schwartz, who fired it into the net to cut the lead to 4-1.

McCann scored his 10th goal of the season at 6:27 of the third period with a wrist shot from the left circle, narrowing the Sharks’ lead to 4-2.

With just over three minutes left, the Kraken pulled Daccord for an extra attacker. They thought they had scored when Beniers put the puck in the net with seven seconds left, but after review for goalie interference, the goal was disallowed.

Sharks aim to build on their young talent in the rematch against the Kraken

It looks like the San Jose Sharks’ future is bright.

Macklin Celebrini, the No. 1 overall pick in this past summer’s NHL draft, and Will Smith, the No. 4 overall pick in 2023, each scored a goal and had an assist as the Sharks beat the Seattle Kraken 8-5 on Black Friday.

The two Pacific Division teams will finish their home-and-home series on Saturday night in Seattle.

Celebrini has scored four goals in his last three games, and Smith had his third straight game with multiple points, recording two goals and four assists. With the win, the Sharks improved to 2-2-1 in their last five games.

Celebrini became the second 18-year-old in franchise history to score in at least three straight games. Jeff Friesen had a five-game scoring streak in 1994-95.

San Jose’s 8-5 win was their highest-scoring game since an 8-2 victory over Philadelphia on October 9, 2018. This came just two games after a 7-2 win against Los Angeles on Monday.

Ethan Cardwell, in just his fourth game, scored his first NHL goal. Cardwell made a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle at 7:37 of the third period to put the Sharks ahead by two goals.

“I think I blacked out there for a minute,” Cardwell said about his goal. “It was an awesome moment, everything I dreamed of. To have a crowd go crazy like that and see all the boys’ excitement to come to the bench made it all that much worth it.”

Klim Kostin, who was moved up in the lineup, had a Gordie Howe hat trick — scoring a goal, recording an assist, and getting into a fight.

Seattle Kraken and Columbus Blue

“I didn’t expect (to play with Mikael Granlund and Smith) when I go to the rink,” Kostin said. “When I saw the lineup, I was like, ‘Hey man, you gotta take that opportunity to prove yourself that you can play hockey.’”

However, Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky wasn’t completely happy with the team’s performance.

“It was whoever wanted to play defense would probably win the hockey game,” Warsofsky said. “(There are) some things we got to look at and be better for (Saturday).”

Kraken coach Dan Bylsma chose his words carefully when asked about the game in the postgame press conference.

“The finishing statement will be that we gave them a lot of opportunities to demonstrate their skill,” Bylsma said.

The Kraken got two power-play goals from Shane Wright, the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, while Chandler Stephenson scored a goal and had two assists. Oliver Bjorkstrand added a goal and an assist, but goalie Philipp Grubauer only stopped 19 of 26 shots, leaving him with a 1-7-0 record this season.

“Just not the type of game we want to get into,” said Wright, who has five points (three goals, two assists) in three games since returning to the lineup after being a healthy scratch for three games. “Any time you give up eight goals, it’s not going to end well for you.”

Bjorkstrand said the Kraken are focused on bouncing back in the next game.

“We have something to prove,” Bjorkstrand said. “It’s going to be a statement game, that we’re not going to have very many of these.”

Shane Wright makes an impact in his return, leading the Kraken to a win over the Ducks

Shane Wright made a strong return to the lineup with a goal and an assist, helping the Seattle Kraken beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on Monday night in the first game of a home-and-home series between the two teams.

Andre Burakovsky and Brandon Montour also scored, and Ryker Evans contributed two assists for Seattle, which had lost five consecutive road games since late October. Goaltender Joey Daccord made 21 saves to earn his sixth win in the last seven games.

For Anaheim, Trevor Zegras and Frank Vatrano scored. Troy Terry provided two assists, and Lukas Dostal made 24 saves on 27 shots. The Ducks are now on a two-game losing streak (0-1-1).

The Kraken were down 2-1 going into the third period but quickly turned the game around by scoring twice within the first 1:10.

Burakovsky tied the game just 46 seconds into the third, redirecting a pass from Jared McCann at the left post. Wright then won a faceoff in the offensive zone, sending the puck to Montour, who fired a slapshot from the right point into the upper left corner of the net just 24 seconds later, giving Seattle the lead.

Seattle Kraken and Columbus Blue

Seattle had scored the first goal at 7:12 of the first period. Wright battled a defender in front of the net and redirected Oliver Bjorkstrand’s shot past Dostal. Wright, who was a healthy scratch in the last three games, hadn’t scored a point since October 17.

Anaheim equalized at 15:59 of the first when they had an extra attacker on the ice. Terry passed to Zegras, who fired a shot from the left faceoff circle over Daccord’s shoulder to make it 1-1.

In the second period, the Ducks took the lead when Vatrano scored a rebound goal at 6:17 after Daccord made a save on Olen Zellweger.

Late in the second period, Ducks forward Leo Carlsson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 draft, suffered an upper-body injury after crashing into his own net following a hit by Seattle’s Tye Kartye, who was penalized for interference. Carlsson did not return to the game.
