Super Bowl 59 in Las Vegas may shatter 2024’s viewership record, featuring Donald Trump, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar

John Madden once said the biggest difference in sports is between the winner and loser of the Super Bowl. When comparing America’s biggest sporting events, the largest difference is between the Super Bowl and anything else trying to be close.

Sting called it “Americana at its most kitsch.” Paul McCartney said, “There’s nothing bigger than being asked to perform at the Super Bowl.” Legendary New York ad executive Jerry Della Femina — the inspiration for the show “Mad Men” — called it “Judgment Day,” adding, “[P]oliticians have Election Day and Hollywood has the Oscars. Advertising has the Super Bowl.” Before the Nielsen ratings, the most-watched television event in history was thought to be the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Now, the top 10 shows in history — and 19 of the top 20 — are all Super Bowls. The NFL hopes this year’s game can break last year’s massive record of 123.4 million average viewers. But it may take some serious hype and luck, with last year’s Super Bowl surpassing the previous season’s record by an impressive 7.4 percent.

That number was partly boosted by simulcasts on streaming platforms, but the biggest factor was that the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers went into overtime, giving the Super Bowl broadcasts extra time to draw in a larger audience. A league source told that while the NFL has been cautious about predicting the size of this year’s audience (partly because last season’s viewership spike was unexpected).

“If there’s a new [viewership] record, will probably have a lot to do with it,” the source said. “I think there are some people [in the league office] that are eager to see how that goes and what can be learned from it. I imagine there is some anticipation at Fox, too.”

The source added that NBC executives will be watching closely and “hoping for a monster” viewership number, since it has next year’s main Super Bowl broadcast and will be adjusting advertising rates based on this year’s results.

President Donald Trump holds a gold hockey stick

“This is going to be interesting when it comes to ratings for a number of reasons,” the league source said, adding that the league’s belief that its media rights are currently “undervalued” will continue to be backed by increasing Super Bowl viewership.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how Super Bowl LIX draws viewers in beyond just the football game. It’s already clear the event will have no shortage of exciting — and possibly conflicting — attractions. Among them…

Donald Trump’s attendance
Trump’s decision to become the first sitting U.S. President to attend a Super Bowl has made headlines since it was announced earlier this week. After exchanging criticism with Trump during his last time in office, the NFL office and team owners have tried to balance social justice efforts while avoiding getting pulled into political debates, especially around the national anthem protests.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Monday that the league would continue working on diversity in its hiring, which goes against the anti-DEI stance Trump has held since returning to the White House.

But after Goodell’s statement, the NFL unexpectedly decided to change one of the end zone messages — from “end racism” to “choose love” — after Trump’s attendance was confirmed. The change raised some questions, even though the league said it wanted to use a more “uplifting” message instead of the “end racism” message that had been in the Super Bowl end zones since 2021.

The move has brought extra attention to how the league will handle the spotlight Trump brings to the game, which will add intrigue to the broadcast. No one knows yet exactly how Trump will be involved in the game or what his role will be before or after the game.

Taylor Swift’s attendance
In contrast to Trump’s attendance, Swift’s presence at the game is expected to add another layer of excitement, as she is likely to cheer on Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce from a Super Bowl skybox. Their relationship has even created prop bets at various sportsbooks, such as whether they’ll share a post-Super Bowl kiss or if Kelce will propose.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Relationship Fuels NFL Popularity and Expands Global Audience
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Relationship Fuels NFL Popularity and Expands Global Audience

This will bring a lot of Swift fans to the game but also annoy those who just want to focus on the football game without the celebrity drama. Either way, Swift’s presence will be a big part of Sunday, especially considering she endorsed Kamala Harris in the election, which adds an awkward dynamic with Trump’s presence. Expect plenty of camera shots of Swift and Trump during the broadcast.

Will Kendrick Lamar perform ‘Not Like Us?’
The highly popular California rapper Kendrick Lamar has generated a lot of excitement as the halftime performer. But it’s raised a lot of curiosity about whether he’ll perform his diss track “Not Like Us,” which took shots at Drake in a rap feud, led to a defamation lawsuit, and even became popular at some Democratic rallies during the presidential election.

Did we mention Trump will be at the game while Lamar performs? No one knows yet if Lamar will include the song in his halftime show, and many wonder how the lyrics might be adjusted, as some of them would likely be muted during a broadcast. When asked about playing the song, Lamar avoided directly answering the question. This uncertainty adds to the intrigue and will likely draw in a larger viewing audience.

Super Saquon Barkley and the Eagles are primed to win the Super Bowl in Philadelphia, thanks to their unmatched offense and defense

Saquon Barkley made a huge impact in his first season with the Philadelphia Eagles, not just with his performance but by setting a new franchise record for rushing yards in a season. He is now one of only nine players in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards. He has also had seven runs of 60 yards or more (including postseason), and he’s one of only two players in NFL history to rush for over 400 yards and score five touchdowns in a single postseason.

Barkley is now just 30 yards away from breaking the NFL’s all-time season rushing record, which was set by Terrell Davis in 1998. Barkley has 2,447 yards, with 442 of those coming in the playoffs, while Davis had 2,476 yards during the Broncos’ Super Bowl-winning season.

On Sunday, which is his 28th birthday, Barkley is set to break the rushing record and win the Lombardi Trophy.

Barkley has been a game-changer for the Eagles, the kind of player they didn’t have two years ago when they lost to Kansas City in the Super Bowl by just two points. His impressive performances in the postseason have helped the Eagles secure 17 wins, a division title, and the NFC championship. His addition has made this version of the Eagles even better than the 2022 team, and perhaps even better than the 2017 Super Bowl-winning squad.

Consider this: in the last Super Bowl against Kansas City, Jalen Hurts led the Eagles in rushing with 70 yards, and the team only totaled 115 yards rushing. Barkley could reach that number by halftime.

As for Hurts, while he isn’t yet at the same level as Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, he still made a big impact in their first Super Bowl meeting. Hurts had a standout performance, throwing for 304 yards and a touchdown, rushing for 70 yards and three scores, and even adding a game-tying 2-point conversion. He now aims to be the fourth quarterback in NFL history to win the Super Bowl after losing their first Super Bowl start.

The Eagles also set a new record for most rushing yards in a season with 3,731 yards during the regular season and playoffs. They are now on track to break their own record for most touchdown runs in a season, having already scored 39 heading into the Super Bowl, just three shy of their 2022 record.

Eagles defense
Barkley isn’t the only new player making a big impact on the field since the last Super Bowl matchup.

Jalen Carter, the ninth-overall pick in the 2023 draft, had an outstanding season with five sacks, 53 quarterback pressures, 12 QB hits, five batted passes, and two forced fumbles.

Led by Carter, the Eagles have three of the top eight and four of the top 22 interior pass rushers in the NFL this season.

Here are a few more numbers that show how well the Eagles’ defense has played this year and might make Mahomes take another look at the film. The Eagles led the NFL in total defense with 278.4 yards allowed per game for the seventh time in franchise history. They ranked No. 1 in passing yards allowed per game (174.2), marking the second time in the last three years. The Eagles are also plus-27 in turnover differential from Week 8 through the postseason.

Another new face who helped make a big difference is defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. At 66, Fangio has helped rebuild a defense that was near the bottom of the NFL in 2023 into one of the best in the league, as the Eagles led the NFL in advanced efficiency metrics.

Fangio has played a key role in the defensive turnaround in Philadelphia. He saw potential in free agent Zack Baun, who was mostly a special teams player with limited time on defense as an outside rusher in New Orleans, and turned him into an All-Pro inside linebacker and a finalist for AP Defensive Player of the Year.

Fangio also helped two rookie starters, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, find their place in the secondary, which contributed to the defense’s improvement. However, Fangio has one major weakness on his record: His 0-8 record against Mahomes when he was a head coach in Denver and a coordinator in Miami.

Special teams
The Eagles could face some challenges in the Super Bowl if it comes down to the last play, especially since the Chiefs have a history of dramatic comebacks.

Jake Elliott, once known for his reliability as “Jake the Make,” had the worst season of his career. He missed eight field goals during the regular season and made only 1 out of 7 attempts from over 50 yards. In the playoffs, he missed three extra points and another field goal from over 50 yards.

“I don’t think Jake really dwells on it. That’s the great thing,” special teams coach Michael Clay said. “He’s the kind of guy that, almost like a golfer’s mindset, you will hit a bad shot here as a golfer, but how do you bounce back from it? His mental is so strong. I’m never too worried about him. He’ll flush it after the first one.”

Elliott made all three extra points and successfully kicked both field goals (35 and 33 yards) against Kansas City in the Super Bowl.

Harrison Butker, Kansas City’s kicker, has remained consistent at the top of his game. One of the most accurate kickers in the NFL, Butker helped keep Kansas City in the Super Bowl last year against San Francisco with three field goals, including a 57-yarder in the third quarter. He also kicked a 29-yarder at the end of regulation to force overtime, and then kicked the game-winning field goal with 8 seconds left to beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl.

At 72, Bill Belichick, no longer in the NFL, makes his mark at the Super Bowl in New Orleans

At 72 years old and out of the NFL, Bill Belichick still managed to grab attention during Super Bowl week.

What was the former Patriots coach wearing on the red carpet?

All of his Super Bowl rings.

Belichick was the center of attention at the NFL Honors, where he not only showed off his impressive collection of Super Bowl rings, earned from winning more titles than any other coach in NFL history, but also got playfully teased during the awards show. On social media, people were less kind, especially after he walked arm-in-arm with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

Belichick even ditched his usual hoodie for a burgundy sports coat, while Hudson looked stunning in a silver sequin dress.

These days, Belichick is as much a topic on TMZ as he is in NFL news or his new role as head coach at North Carolina. Hudson caught attention when she appeared to wear one of Belichick’s Super Bowl rings on her ring finger, sparking engagement rumors on social media. The Daily Mail even posted pictures of her “showing off a stunning sparkler” at a charity event in New Orleans on Wednesday.

Hold on, paparazzi.

Hudson later posted on Instagram that the ring she wore at the Honors was actually a Bridgewater State University Bearcats National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Championship ring — not a Super Bowl ring.

Like any young couple — or at least a couple with one young person — they were spotted out after the show enjoying Bourbon Street bars.

The grumpy coach who didn’t engage with reporters in New England is now a media favorite after his split with the Patriots. He jokes around and shares insights on “The Pat McAfee Show” and has even hosted two podcasts. He appeared on the NFL Network on Thursday night but refused to pick a Super Bowl winner between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Bill Belichick shows his Super Bowl rings as he walks the red carpet

“He’s changed in a good way. I like it,” retired Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski told The Associated Press. “I like it big time. How he’s been representing. How he’s swaggy. How he’s been in a new world, not coaching in the NFL. He’s been spectacular. Everyone loves him now.”

Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as head coach with the New England Patriots and two more as an assistant with the New York Giants, even seems to have developed a sense of humor, at least about his relationship with Hudson.

Host and rapper Snoop Dogg made fun of the age gap between Belichick and Hudson during his monologue, joking about remembering a time when the Cowboys were good and the Chiefs were bad, and how Belichick’s girlfriend wasn’t even born yet.

Belichick and Hudson laughed politely while the crowd reacted with “awws” to the joke.

Social media users quickly joined in on the fun, with one person posting a picture of the couple at the awards show and writing, “You can make fun of Bill Belichick all you want, but I think it’s really nice that he took his girlfriend to the NFL Awards even if it is a school night.” Another shared a collage featuring Napster and “Toy Story 2,” joking, “All of these things are older than Bill Belichick’s girlfriend.”

Date nights might become harder to come by once Belichick returns to college.

Belichick signed a five-year deal with North Carolina in December worth $10 million per year in base and supplemental salary, with the first three years guaranteed, including buyout terms. There’s also up to $3.5 million in annual bonuses.

That’s plenty of money for Belichick to buy as many rings as Hudson wants — just like her boyfriend — for all her fingers.

In New Orleans, rookies from both the Eagles and Chiefs may have a big impact on the Super Bowl

Reed Blankenship was a part-time player as a rookie during Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run two years ago and only played one defensive snap against the Kansas City Chiefs.

That’s why he’s amazed at the impact rookies like Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have had on the Eagles this season, turning a secondary that was a weakness last year into a strength heading into the Super Bowl rematch against the Chiefs on Sunday.

“It’s crazy hard,” Blankenship said about having a big role as a first-year player. “It’s great to see our rookies grow the way they did. They play, they study, and they ask questions like vets. Knowing that they know what their job is, it makes my life so much easier.”

Mitchell and DeJean are far from the only rookies who could play important roles on Sunday. Kansas City first-round receiver Xavier Worthy has become a key part of the passing game in recent weeks.

Mitchell, who finished second in the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, has allowed just five catches on 15 targets for 24 yards this postseason, according to NFL NextGen stats. Mitchell was drafted in the first round even though he played college football at Toledo in the MAC, but he has quickly become one of the better cornerbacks in the league.

“I’m just living proof that it doesn’t matter where you come from,” he said. “Just got to put in the hard work and just believe it.”

DeJean helped improve the defense after getting his first start in Week 6 and has allowed just 97 yards on 15 targets this postseason.

Philadelphia’s Jalyx Hunt has become an important situational pass rusher in the second half of the season and had a sack in the divisional round against the Rams. Will Shipley had a 57-yard run and forced a fumble in kick coverage, and Jeremiah Trotter has made key plays on special teams, all while GM Howie Roseman’s draft class has delivered.

Kansas City Chiefs players celebrate in the 1st half

“We’ve gotten great contributions from our rookie class,” coach Nick Sirianni said. “That’s a tribute to Howie and his staff for all the work they put in to get the right type of guys in, first and foremost. Talent only gets you the first part. You’ve got to have something else to get to where we are right now.”

The Chiefs don’t have as many contributors from their draft class, with safety Jaden Hicks being another key player along with Worthy. But the speedy Worthy, who set a record for the fastest 40-yard dash at last year’s combine, could be one of the most important rookies on Sunday.

Kansas City traded up to draft Worthy 28th overall last April, but there were questions about how his 165-pound frame would hold up in the more physical NFL.

“I was coming into the season doubted,” he said. “Everybody said he’s not fit to be a big-time receiver, he’s too small, injury-prone. I feel like I proved everyone wrong and I’m going to continue proving everyone wrong.”

Worthy leads the Chiefs with 10 touchdowns in the regular season and playoffs and has been at his best late in the season. He leads the team with 50 catches for 522 yards over his last nine games—excluding a one-snap cameo in Week 18—as he has built a strong chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“He’s gotten better every week,” coach Andy Reid said. “He and Pat have a tremendous relationship and he has Pat’s trust. That takes time and work for any young receiver and he’s done that.”

They’re calling Saquon Barkley a “once-in-a-lifetime talent” in New York

Saquon Barkley’s remarkable season has been a major topic during Super Bowl week.

From Hall of Fame running backs like Eric Dickerson, Marshall Faulk, and Thurman Thomas to Falcons star Bijan Robinson, everyone has praised Barkley’s incredible performance.

Barkley has helped the Philadelphia Eagles reach the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, where they’ll aim to stop the Chiefs from winning a third straight championship.

Barkley was named the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 2,005 yards in the regular season, which ranks as the eighth-best in NFL history. He skipped Philadelphia’s final regular-season game when he was just 101 yards short of breaking Dickerson’s single-season record.

He has followed up his regular-season success with 442 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the playoffs. In total, Barkley has accumulated 2,447 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, including seven scores of over 60 yards. He is just 30 yards away from surpassing Terrell Davis’ 26-year-old record for the most rushing yards in a season, including playoffs.

Here’s what others are saying about Barkley:

Eric Dickerson:
“Saquon and that offensive line, they’re awesome. I’m glad to see him go to a team like that. He deserves that. I heard him say it and it reminded me of myself: ‘I’m having fun again.’ He’s loving it again because it’s no fun when you’re getting hit in the backfield and you’re getting 30 yards. What happens is they start blaming you. But there’s nowhere to go, nowhere to run, they don’t have a quarterback, the offensive line is terrible. So for him, I’m really happy. I talked to him, I congratulated him. He seemed like a really nice young man.”

Saquon Barkley leaves the field after the game

Marshall Faulk:
“Just consistency. He’s been able to elevate his game in the biggest moments when they needed it most. Patience, attention to detail and really trusting the guys up front. The guy is a generational talent and, obviously, year one of the Giants, we got to see it. They didn’t put the right pieces around (him), which we need. We need that in this game. Philly had all the right components for him to show us and remind us of the generational talent he has.”

Thurman Thomas:
“I’ve seen actual growth. He’s a captain on his team. He’s a leader on his team. He’s been in the spotlight just by being on the Giants. He knows how to handle everything. He’s been the perfect football player, the perfect person since he’s come into the league and even back when he was at Penn State. He’s brought a toughness to the City of Brotherly Love. I just like his overall game. He can do it all. He can block. He can run, catch passes. This could be a trend for the Philadelphia Eagles for the next three or four years depending on how they use him.”

Bijan Robinson:
“It’s been some of the most special stuff to watch not just for running backs but for all NFL fans. Just the things he’s been doing has been spectacular. You can just see last year people saying he was done, he was out, he was a bust, he doesn’t deserve money, all that type stuff. Then you can fast forward a year later and he’s the best running back in the league this year so it’s pretty special to watch. Me and him talk a lot. We’ll probably train together this offseason so having a guy like that and supporting a guy like that is pretty cool.”

The new kickoff rule will be tested in the Super Bowl after last year’s game in Glendale saw no returns

Last year’s Super Bowl had almost everything.

There were trick plays, big performances, and a lot of excitement as Kansas City came back for a 25-22 overtime win against San Francisco.

The one thing missing was a kickoff return.

All 13 kickoffs went for touchbacks, making it the first Super Bowl ever without a kickoff return. This pushed the NFL to make a big rule change by completely redesigning the kickoff.

Now, the new kickoff rule, which has led to fewer injuries and more returns, will be seen on the biggest stage this Sunday when the Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

“It’s kind of brought a new life to it,” said Eagles special teams coordinator Michael Clay. “Gives us something to coach off of, kind of go back to the drawing board and get creative with our ideas.”

The new rule, called the “dynamic kickoff,” was made to reduce injuries by limiting fast, hard collisions and to encourage more returns after the number of returns dropped to 21.8% last season.

For those who don’t know, the new setup looks unusual at first. The kicker stands alone at his 35-yard line, while the 10 coverage players line up at the 40-yard line of the opposing team. The return team lines up with at least nine blockers between the 30- and 35-yard lines, and seven of those players must be on the 35-yard line. Up to two returners can stand inside the 20-yard line.

Only the kicker and two returners can move before the ball touches the ground or the returner.

Any kick that goes into the end zone in the air can be returned, or the receiving team can take a touchback and start from the 30-yard line. A kick that either goes out of bounds or over the end zone in the air will result in a touchback at the 30-yard line.

Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll
Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll (NFL)

According to the NFL, this change led to 332 more returns in 2024, with the return rate jumping to 32.8%. There were also 59 returns of at least 40 yards, the highest since 2016, and seven touchdown returns. The concussion rate dropped 43% from the last three years, and there were the fewest lower-leg injuries on kick returns since 2018.

The return rate reached 45.1% in the postseason, although this could be more due to the cold weather affecting kicking distance, which won’t be a problem at the Super Bowl in a dome.

During the regular season, both the Chiefs and Eagles saw about one-sixth of their kickoffs reach the area requiring a return, with the Chiefs at 17.2% and the Eagles at 16.5%. Philadelphia’s rate increased to 43.5% in the playoffs, likely due to weather conditions more than strategy.

Clay said, “We want to minimize any of the risk that can possibly happen. We’re just trying to eliminate any added variables that get us in trouble.”

The rule is a one-year trial, and it could be changed or removed this offseason. Kansas City’s special teams coach Dave Toub generally likes the rule but suggests that moving touchbacks to the 35-yard line could lead to even more returns.

The Eagles and Chiefs have both relied on kick returns to help them reach the Super Bowl.

The Eagles’ coverage team forced two turnovers, including a fumble recovery on the opening kickoff of their wild-card win over Green Bay and another in the NFC Championship against Washington. Kenneth Gainwell also had a 44-yard return in their divisional round win over the Rams.

The Chiefs set the tone with a 63-yard opening return by Nikko Remigio in their first playoff game, setting up a score.

Clay said, “The guys like it. They’ve embraced it and just want to do anything to help this team advance as far as possible.”

Kendrick Lamar will talk about his Super Bowl halftime performance in New Orleans

What can viewers expect from Kendrick Lamar’s highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime performance? So far, it’s confirmed that SZA will join him on stage, but more information may be shared on Thursday when the Grammy-winning artist speaks before Sunday’s game.

Apple Music’s Ebro Darden and Nadeska Alexis will interview Lamar and other pre-game performers starting at 10 a.m. Central time. The rap star takes the Super Bowl stage after winning two major Grammy awards — song and record of the year — for his diss track “Not Like Us.”

Apple Music will stream the interview on its platform and social media, including YouTube and Facebook.

This isn’t Lamar’s first time performing on the Super Bowl’s major musical stage. He’s excited to bring hip-hop back to the NFL’s championship game after performing as a guest with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, and Eminem in 2022.

The pre-game media session might reveal some details about the performance, but headliners often keep some surprises. Rihanna did this in 2023 when she revealed she was pregnant with her second child during her Super Bowl performance.

Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl 59 Opening Night

The Super Bowl will take place on Sunday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, where the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending champions, will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch.

Who else is performing at the Super Bowl?

The pregame show will have a local touch, with Jon Batiste singing the national anthem. Trombone Shorty and Lauren Daigle are set to perform “America the Beautiful.”

Ledisi will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as part of the pregame performances.

The national anthem and “America the Beautiful” will be performed by actor Stephanie Nogueras in American Sign Language. Otis Jones IV will sign “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and Matt Maxey will sign the halftime show.

All the pregame performers are from Louisiana.

Vic Fangio transformed the Eagles’ defense in Philadelphia and now aims for his first Super Bowl title

Vic Fangio’s coaching journey started in the 1970s as a high school assistant in Pennsylvania, and it has taken him across the country, leading him to become one of the most creative defensive minds in the NFL.

Now at 66, Fangio is at the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the city where he began his NFL coaching career, as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, the team he grew up rooting for. This is his chance to complete his career with a Super Bowl win.

“I grew up a Philadelphia sports fan,” Fangio said. “Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, started my pro career in Philadelphia with the USFL. And now I’ll probably end it here one of these years. It’s kind of come full circle. … I kind of fit there.”

Fangio has revamped a defense that ranked near the bottom of the NFL in 2023, turning it into one of the league’s best. The Eagles now lead in advanced defensive stats and have allowed the second-fewest points in the league.

He’s a big reason why the Eagles are in the Super Bowl, offering Fangio a chance to win his first championship after 38 seasons in the NFL, following a tough head coaching stint in Denver.

“I still really like to do it. I think I’m still halfway decent at it,” Fangio said. “It’s great. If you hang around long enough the tide will turn.”

Fangio’s NFL career began coaching one of the top linebacker groups ever, the “Dome Patrol” in New Orleans in 1986. He later became the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 1995. Since then, except for a brief stint at Stanford, he’s spent most of his career in the NFL, creating a defensive style that has influenced many teams. His strategy focuses on disguising coverages and keeping two safeties deep to avoid big plays.

Fangio’s only previous Super Bowl appearance came in the 2012 season when he lost to Baltimore with the San Francisco 49ers at the Superdome.

“When you talk about coaches, sometimes you’re like ‘He’s been a good coach for years.’ He’s very good coach for decades, which is impressive,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said.

Vic Fangio looks on before an NFL football game

“He’s had an unbelievable career and done so many good things and just so grateful that he’s on the staff. He has the standard of how it’s supposed to look and holds the guys to that standard. He’s not afraid to tell you what he thinks if you don’t meet the standard and praise you if you do meet the standards.”

Fangio has played a key role in turning around the Eagles’ defense. He saw enough potential in free-agent Zack Baun to turn him from a special teams player with limited defensive snaps in New Orleans into an All-Pro linebacker and a finalist for AP Defensive Player of the Year in Philadelphia.

Fangio has also helped develop two rookie starters in the secondary, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, which was a big factor in the team’s success.

“He’s like a father figure,” Mitchell said. “He’s going to hold you accountable. He’s serious. But he’s got jokes too. He’s funny as well.”

However, Fangio will face his toughest challenge on Sunday against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fangio’s 0-8 record against Mahomes as a head coach in Denver and a play-caller in Miami is well-known, but it doesn’t tell the full story. He never had a defense as strong as the one he’s working with now. His previous defenses allowed just 21.6 points per game against Kansas City, with Mahomes throwing only 10 touchdowns in those games and having a lower passer rating (95.9) and yards per attempt (7.3) than his career averages.

“Every time I’ve played Coach Fangio, there’s been different changeups and different things he’s thrown at us,” Mahomes said. “That’s what makes him so great. He won’t do what he did the last time.”

Mahomes described playing against Fangio as a “chess match,” and Fangio emphasized the need to change up strategies because of Mahomes’ ability to read defenses both before and after the snap.

“There is no secret. This is his seventh year as a starter. No one has gotten the formula to beat him,” Fangio said. “He’s won the chess match against me, the final score. We’ll see if there’s something we can come up with.”

Eagles GM Howie Roseman’s offseason moves, dubbed “Howie season,” have led Philadelphia back to the Super Bowl

Howie Roseman’s rise to becoming one of the top executives in the NFL started in 2000 as an unpaid intern with the Philadelphia Eagles. He eventually became the youngest general manager in NFL history at age 34 in 2010, a dream he’d had since childhood, when he would analyze college players and create draft boards.

But his journey wasn’t always smooth. After a power struggle with former coach Chip Kelly, Roseman was pushed out in 2015. However, he regained control the following year after Kelly was fired. In 2017, Roseman built the Eagles’ first Super Bowl-winning team.

After a disappointing 2020 season, he rebuilt the team again, leading them back to the Super Bowl two years later, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35.

Now, the Eagles are back in the Super Bowl for a rematch with the Chiefs this Sunday. None of this would have been possible without Roseman’s excellent moves last offseason following the team’s collapse from a 10-1 start. “I really feel like the only thing that matters is the outcome on Sunday,” Roseman said. “I’ll trade every (personal) award you can ever get for another world championship.”

Roseman has been both criticized and celebrated by fans. In the past, many Eagles fans wanted him fired, but now they call the offseason “Howie Season” or “#HowieSzn” because of his ability to manage the salary cap and add key players to the team.

During “Howie season,” the Eagles made several major moves: they acquired Saquon Barkley from the rival New York Giants, signed a special teams player and turned Zack Baun into an All-Pro linebacker, and drafted cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, strengthening the defense.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni credited Roseman for his efforts, saying, “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said how good of a job Howie has done in getting these guys in here… With eight new starters on defense, really good defense in 2022, really good defense here in 2024.”

Some of Roseman’s picks, like Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson in 2020, and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside over DK Metcalf in 2019, have been criticized, but recent moves have paid off. Drafting DeVonta Smith in 2021 and acquiring A.J. Brown in a trade gave the Eagles one of the top receiving duos in the league.

Selecting Jalen Hurts in the second round of 2020, even though the team already had Carson Wentz, might be Roseman’s best pick. He also took a chance on Jordan Mailata in 2018, who had no football experience but became one of the NFL’s best left tackles.

Roseman doesn’t boast about his success and remains humble, acknowledging the tough nature of working in Philadelphia. “When you work in Philly, you know you’re one step away from banners flying over stadiums (saying ‘Fire Howie!’),” he said. “So I think that you gotta be humble. You have to keep your head down. All that matters is winning.”

When shown a photo of a fan wearing an Eagles jersey with “Howie” on the back and the No. 52 from the 2018 Super Bowl win, Roseman said, “Want to make him proud. One more.”

If the Eagles win this Super Bowl, fans might start calling the entire Super Bowl week “Howie season” instead of just the offseason.

The NFL will stencil “Choose Love” in the Superdome end zone at the Super Bowl to inspire the nation after recent tragedies

For the Super Bowl on Sunday, the NFL is stenciling “Choose Love” in one of the end zones at the Superdome, aiming to uplift the country after a series of tragic events earlier this year.

“The Super Bowl is often a snapshot in time, and the NFL is in a unique position to inspire and engage the country,” said league spokesman Brian McCarthy. “’Choose Love’ is the right message as the country has faced wildfires in Southern California, a terrorist attack in New Orleans, a plane crash near Washington, D.C., and another in Philadelphia.”

The message “It Takes All of Us” will be stenciled in the other end zone, as it has been since the NFL started using field stencils in 2020 for its Inspire Change initiative. Teams have selected messages like “Vote,” “End Racism,” “Stop Hate,” and “Choose Love” for the other end zone.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who are aiming for a three-peat, used “Choose Love” in the AFC Championship Game against Buffalo, while the Philadelphia Eagles picked “End Racism” for the NFC Championship.

President Donald Trump will be at the game as the Chiefs try to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

Some sources denied claims that Trump’s attendance was the reason “End Racism” would not be stenciled this year. Both sources wished to remain anonymous as they weren’t authorized to discuss the matter.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated Monday that the league’s diversity efforts are not in conflict with the Trump administration’s position on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The NFL enforces policies like the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview diverse candidates for top coaching and front-office positions.

Goodell added that NFL owners, many of whom supported Trump’s 2024 campaign, help shape the league’s policies, which are in line with the law and serve the league’s best interests.

Donald Trump set to become the first sitting US president to attend the Super Bowl in Miami

Donald Trump will make history as the first sitting US president to attend the Super Bowl when he watches the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday in New Orleans.

A White House official confirmed Trump’s attendance to the Associated Press on Tuesday. While sitting US vice-presidents, including Al Gore and George HW Bush, have attended Super Bowls before, no sitting president has ever done so.

Trump will also participate in a pre-recorded interview that will be aired during the pregame show on Fox, which is broadcasting the Super Bowl this year. In contrast, Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, turned down requests for an interview during the Super Bowl in 2023 and 2024. Trump himself also declined to do a Super Bowl interview in 2018, during his first term.

A passionate sports fan, Trump is often seen at golf tournaments and college football games. While he has received cheers at some events, he was booed during his first term when he attended the 2019 World Series, with fans at the game chanting “lock him up.” Last weekend, Canadian NBA and NHL fans also booed the US national anthem after Trump threatened tariffs on US goods.

Trump has not revealed which team he will be supporting on Sunday, but many believe he might favor the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes arrives in New Orleans

The Eagles were disinvited from a White House visit in 2018 after their last Super Bowl win. In contrast, several people around the Chiefs, including kicker Harrison Butker and Brittany Mahomes, wife of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have shown support for Trump’s MAGA movement. Trump also congratulated the Chiefs after they reached the Super Bowl by beating the Buffalo Bills, a gesture he did not extend to the Eagles.

“Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs,” Trump posted on social media. “What a GREAT Team, Coach, Quarterback, and virtually everything else, including those fantastic FANS, that voted for me (MAGA!) in record numbers. Likewise, congratulations to the Buffalo Bills on a tremendous season. They will do a lot of winning long into the future!!!”

Trump’s attendance marks a shift in his relationship with the NFL. During his first term, he spent a lot of time criticizing the league, especially after players began kneeling during the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice.
