Golden Knights Surge Past Sharks 6-3 with Two Short-Handed Goals in Dominant Third Period

The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the San Jose Sharks 6-3 on Friday night, thanks in part to key short-handed goals by Brayden McNabb and Jack Eichel early in the third period. The two goals came just seconds apart, shifting the momentum firmly in Vegas’s favor. Alex Pietrangelo played a pivotal role with three assists, while other Golden Knights contributors included Noah Hanifin, Mark Stone, Pavel Dorofeyev, and Brett Howden, all of whom scored goals. Vegas erupted for four unanswered goals in the final frame to secure their victory.

The Sharks, led by rookie Will Smith, had an initial 3-2 lead early in the third period. Smith scored a goal and added an assist, while Shakir Mukhamadullin and Tyler Toffoli also found the back of the net. Toffoli’s goal came late in the second period, when his shot off the back of a Vegas defenseman ricocheted past goalie Adin Hill, giving San Jose a brief lead. However, the Sharks’ momentum quickly vanished as Vegas capitalized on two short-handed goals in quick succession.

Vegas’s victory marked their fifth straight win and extended their dominance with nine victories in their last 10 games. Meanwhile, the Sharks’ struggles continued, as they fell to their fifth consecutive loss and have now dropped eight of their last nine games and 12 of 14. Despite holding their own against one of the NHL’s top teams for much of the game, San Jose collapsed late in the third period, allowing the Golden Knights to take control.

Before the game, the Sharks held a video tribute to Tomas Hertl, marking his return to San Jose for the first time since being traded to Vegas earlier in the year. Hertl, who spent parts of 11 seasons with the Sharks and helped lead them to the 2019 Western Conference Finals, was celebrated for his contributions to the team. The tribute added emotional significance to the game, though the Sharks could not capitalize on the occasion.

In terms of individual achievements, Mukhamadullin scored his first NHL goal, adding to his growing profile. The 22-year-old defenseman, acquired from New Jersey in the Timo Meier trade, was playing in just his ninth game and earned his second career point. Looking ahead, the Golden Knights will host the Calgary Flames on Sunday, while the Sharks will face the same opponent at home on Saturday.

Shorthanded goals power Knights past Sharks in victory

Brayden McNabb and Jack Eichel scored short-handed goals just 23 seconds apart to lead a four-goal third-period surge, helping the Vegas Golden Knights come from behind to beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 on Friday night.

Vegas earned its league-leading 14th comeback win of the season and extended its winning streak to five games.

Eichel, McNabb, Mark Stone, and Brett Howden each had a goal and an assist, while Noah Hanifin and Pavel Dorofeyev also scored. Alex Pietrangelo recorded three assists, Victor Olofsson added two assists, and Adin Hill made 22 saves. The Golden Knights won their ninth game in the last 10 and improved to 13-0-3 all-time in the regular season at San Jose.

Will Smith had a goal and an assist, and Shakir Mukhamadullin and Tyler Toffoli also scored for the Sharks, who lost their sixth straight game. Fabian Zetterlund added two assists, and Alexandar Georgiev made 30 saves.

Vegas took a 1-0 lead at 6:58 of the first period when Hanifin scored a wrist shot from the slot. San Jose tied it at 14:40 on Mukhamadullin’s first career NHL goal, a slap shot from the left point.

The Golden Knights regained the lead at 3:27 of the second period when Stone scored a backhand rebound. However, San Jose answered with two goals, including Smith’s goal at 5:53 and Toffoli’s at 15:57, to take a 3-2 lead.

In the third period, Vegas scored three goals in the first 5:46. McNabb tied the game at 3-3 with a wrist shot from the left circle, and Eichel gave the Knights the lead with another short-handed goal just 23 seconds later. Dorofeyev extended the lead to 5-3 with a backhand shot.

The Sharks pulled Georgiev for an extra attacker with 2:45 left, but Howden sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 31.5 seconds remaining.

Tomas Hertl makes his return to San Jose, now playing for the Golden Knights

Center Tomas Hertl will make his first visit to the SAP Center since being traded last season when the Vegas Golden Knights, who are leading the Pacific Division, face the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

Hertl was selected by San Jose as the 17th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. Over 11 seasons, he scored 218 goals and 484 points, making him the sixth-highest scorer in the team’s history. San Jose traded him to the Golden Knights just before the trade deadline in March. The Sharks will play a video tribute to honor his return.

“I’m excited for it,” said Hertl, 31. “I can’t really tell how the feeling (will be) right now. We are going to be on the other side in the visiting team (locker room).”

“We had some great runs. I played there a long time, but I still want to take the two points from there and have a good game. … I really don’t know what to expect because I haven’t been in this situation before in my life.”

Hertl has scored 10 goals, including a team-high seven on the power play, and has 24 points for Vegas. In the Golden Knights’ last game before the holiday break, he scored the team’s go-ahead goal and added an assist in a 3-1 home win over the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.

With an 8-1-0 record in December, the Golden Knights entered the break with the NHL’s best points percentage at .721. They carry a four-game winning streak into San Jose and have a 25-2-5 record all-time against the Sharks, including a 12-0-3 record in San Jose.

Vegas is 19-3-2 against teams in the Western Conference and 11-2-1 against Pacific Division rivals.

Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)

“Right now in the (Western Conference) I certainly feel we’re going as well as anybody, and that’s a credit to the guys,” said Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy.

The Sharks are in last place in the Pacific Division with 28 points, 21 fewer than the Golden Knights. They’ve lost five straight games since a 4-3 win at St. Louis on Dec. 12, with four of those losses being by one goal. This includes a 3-2 overtime loss to defending Western Conference champions Edmonton last Saturday.

The Sharks are coming off a 4-3 loss to Vancouver on Monday, when they allowed three goals in a 70-second span late in the second period, falling behind 4-1.

“Today was four or five minutes, and we lose a hockey game because of it,” said San Jose coach Ryan Warsofsky on Monday. “So, it’s frustrating. I feel for the guys because I thought we had a good effort tonight.

We competed, we pushed back, but we have to learn from it and move on. … We got to find some mental toughness to push through and stick together and do things and clamp it down and keep it simple.”

San Jose begins a six-game homestand with a back-to-back series against the Golden Knights and Calgary Flames. The Sharks have a 6-9-1 home record this season but will face a Vegas team that is 9-5-3 on the road.

This is the second of three matchups between the two teams. Vegas won the first game 7-3 on Oct. 26 in Las Vegas, with Mark Stone and Pavel Dorofeyev each contributing one goal and two assists.

Golden Knights Edge Jets 3-2 in Overtime, Extend Win Streak and Showcase Resilience

The Vegas Golden Knights secured their fourth consecutive victory in dramatic fashion, defeating the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in overtime at Canada Life Centre. Ivan Barbashev scored the game-winning goal with 1:15 left in the extra period, extending the Knights’ dominance over the Jets to eight straight wins. Despite trailing 1-0 heading into the third period, Vegas rallied with goals from Keegan Kolesar and Victor Olofsson to force overtime, the latter coming during a critical five-on-three power play late in regulation.

The matchup highlighted the strength of both teams’ power plays, with Vegas entering ranked sixth in the league and Winnipeg second. The Golden Knights capitalized on one of their four power-play opportunities, while the Jets went 0-for-1 despite scoring four power-play goals in their previous two games. Vegas has now scored three power-play goals over its last two contests, showcasing its efficiency with the man advantage.

Golden Knights captain Mark Stone continued to make an impact in just his second game back from injury. Stone provided the primary assist on Olofsson’s tying goal and had previously contributed an assist in the team’s 3-2 win over Dallas. Despite missing a significant portion of the season, Stone is on pace to surpass his career-high of 64 points, projecting an impressive 104-point campaign.

Defenseman Shea Theodore was another standout performer for Vegas, notching assists on the team’s last two goals to extend his streak of multi-point games to three. With these contributions, Theodore has now recorded six multi-assist games this season and 43 in his career. His consistent play has been a key factor in the Knights’ recent success, including his two-goal performance against Anaheim earlier in the week.

The Golden Knights showcased resilience, skill, and strong leadership to pull off this thrilling overtime victory. With contributions from key players like Barbashev, Stone, and Theodore, Vegas reinforced its status as a Western Conference powerhouse, demonstrating the depth and determination that could carry them far into the season.

Golden Knights Face Wild Test Seeking Redemption Following Defeat Against Oilers

The Vegas Golden Knights are looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers as they face the Minnesota Wild. Despite entering Saturday’s matchup with momentum from a 3-2 overtime win against the Winnipeg Jets, the Golden Knights struggled to maintain their form against Edmonton. The Jets game showcased their ability to carry the play and secure crucial points, but their performance against the Oilers highlighted areas of concern, particularly during the second period when they conceded four unanswered goals.

In their loss to Edmonton, the Golden Knights saw Ryan Nugent-Hopkins open the scoring on a power play late in the first period. The game quickly spiraled in the second as they struggled defensively, allowing Edmonton to dominate. While Victor Olofsson, Ivan Barbashev, and Brett Howden managed to find the net, their efforts weren’t enough to complete a comeback, especially after Jeff Skinner’s decisive goal for the Oilers.

Golden Knights Face Wild Test Seeking Redemption Following Defeat Against Oilers
Golden Knights Face Wild Test Seeking Redemption Following Defeat Against Oilers

This afternoon’s game against the Minnesota Wild presents another formidable challenge. The Wild’s star forward, Kirill Kaprizov, is in excellent form, boasting 20 goals and 45 points in 29 games. Minnesota’s defense, which allows the fewest goals per game, poses a significant obstacle. However, their struggles on the penalty kill could offer an opportunity for the Golden Knights’ fifth-ranked power play to make an impact, particularly as 5-on-5 scoring may prove challenging.

With the Pacific Division standings tightly contested, the Golden Knights need to secure points to maintain their lead over the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers. Consistent performances in games like this are crucial if they hope to clinch the division title. Goaltending will also play a key role, with Ilya Samsonov set to face Filip Gustavsson, who ranks among the league’s best in save percentage and goals-against average.

Both teams’ lineups highlight a mix of star players and depth. The Golden Knights will rely on their top line of Barbashev, Eichel, and Stone, while the Wild counter with Kaprizov, Rossi, and Zuccarello. Defensive pairings and special teams will be tested in what promises to be a tightly contested matchup. Fans are encouraged to follow THN’s coverage for updates, analysis, and exclusive content on the Golden Knights.

Jordan Kyrou scored the lone goal for St. Louis, which has been solid under new coach Jim Montgomery, going 5-2-2 in their last nine games.

The Anaheim Ducks snapped a five-game skid with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, fueled by Alex Killorn’s two-goal performance, including the game-winner. Jackson LaCombe added a goal and an assist, while Mason McTavish reached his 100th career point. Columbus, despite scoring twice in quick succession during the first period, fell to 1-4-2 in their last seven games.

A four-goal third period propelled the New Jersey Devils to a 4-1 comeback win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, and Timo Meier scored in a two-minute flurry to seal the Devils’ second straight victory. Dawson Mercer started the rally, while Chicago, enduring their seventh loss in eight games, managed a single goal from Jason Dickinson.

David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha led the Boston Bruins to a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Pastrnak’s four-point night included his 400th career assist, and Zacha added a goal and two assists in the convincing victory. Vancouver, struggling to gain momentum, got a lone goal from Max Sasson, while Thatcher Demko made 23 saves in his second start after returning from injury.

The Los Angeles Kings dominated the New York Rangers 5-1, scoring three times in the second period to take control of the game. Adrian Kempe and Quinton Byfield were standouts with a goal and an assist each, while Darcy Kuemper made 31 saves to secure the win. The Rangers pulled Igor Shesterkin after the early barrage as the Kings notched their seventh victory in eight games.

Kirill Kaprizov scored twice as the Minnesota Wild rebounded from a tough loss to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1. Matt Boldy and Marco Rossi added goals, while Marc-Andre Fleury recorded his 567th career win, keeping him second all-time. The Flyers, who had been on a two-game win streak, managed just one goal, scored by Travis Sanheim.

In other notable games, the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 behind Jeff Petry’s two goals, the Tampa Bay Lightning cruised past the Seattle Kraken 5-1 with Jake Guentzel extending his scoring streak, and the Calgary Flames blanked the Florida Panthers 3-0 with Dustin Wolf recording a shutout. Meanwhile, Washington, Winnipeg, and Colorado also secured victories, and the Utah Hockey Club edged the San Jose Sharks 4-3 in a closely contested matchup.

Oilers get off to a fast start, defeat Golden Knights

Leon Draisaitl scored his league-leading 22nd goal and also had two assists as the Edmonton Oilers took a 5-0 lead and held on to win 6-3 over the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor Brown each had a goal and an assist for Edmonton, which extended its win streak to a season-high five games. Zach Hyman and Corey Perry also scored, Darnell Nurse added two assists, and Stuart Skinner made 38 saves. The Oilers are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games.

Ivan Barbashev scored his team-leading 15th goal, and Brett Howden and Victor Olofsson also scored for Vegas, which saw its four-game win streak come to an end. Noah Hanifin had two assists, and Adin Hill made 28 saves but allowed a season-high six goals. The Golden Knights had given up only five goals in their last four games combined.

Edmonton took a 1-0 lead at 17:36 of the first period with a power-play goal by Nugent-Hopkins, who fired a wrist shot from the left circle past a screen into the top far corner. The goal ended a 101-minute shutout streak by Hill and the Golden Knights, as the Oilers had lost 1-0 to Vegas on December 3 in Las Vegas.

Vegas Golden Knights

The Oilers started the second period strong with four consecutive goals by Hyman, Brown, Draisaitl, and Perry on just eight shots in the first 12:53, making it 5-0. But Vegas, which had hit the post three times earlier, got back in the game near the end of the period with two goals in 26 seconds from Olofsson and Hanifin.

Vegas made it 5-3 just a minute into the third period with a short-handed goal by Howden, who stole the puck from Skinner behind the goal and scored on a wraparound into an empty net.

However, Jeff Skinner ended the Golden Knights’ momentum just 38 seconds later when he scored off a rebound of a Mattias Ekholm shot from the high slot, putting the Oilers back up by three and ending the scoring.

Golden Knights and Oilers gaining momentum before their Pacific showdown

The Vegas Golden Knights and the Edmonton Oilers have both won four games in a row and eight of their last 10.

One of these two teams will continue their strong run when they meet in Edmonton on Saturday afternoon.

Ivan Barbashev scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season — and his first career overtime goal — to help the Golden Knights secure a 3-2 win in Winnipeg on Thursday night. Barbashev also had three assists in a 4-2 victory over the Oilers on Nov. 6 and scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Edmonton on Dec. 3.

Keegan Kolesar, who is from Brandon, Manitoba, scored a goal in his hometown to help Vegas complete their comeback over Winnipeg and improve to 8-1-2 in their last 11 road games.

“We were able to tie it up, then go down again, we stayed with it right to the very end,” Kolesar said. “We didn’t let it waver in any way in our play, played right to the whistle, and we were able to come up with two points.”

The Golden Knights likely owe some of their success to goaltender Adin Hill. Hill made 18 saves on Thursday night, improving his record to 11-2-2 in his last 15 starts. That includes stopping 27 shots in the first game against the Oilers and saving all 28 shots in their most recent match.

Edmonton Oilers players celebrate after the win

Hill will again face off against superstars Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. Draisaitl scored a goal and had three assists, while McDavid picked up two assists in Edmonton’s dominant 7-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. To put it in perspective, 13 of Edmonton’s 18 skaters had at least one point in the win.

“Everyone was really good, but Leon really was at another level,” Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said about Draisaitl, who has 10 points (four goals, six assists) during his current four-game point streak.

McDavid has also been on fire, with a four-game point streak (two goals, seven assists), and has recorded points in 13 of his last 15 games.

The Oilers might be without defenseman Evan Bouchard on Saturday after he took a hard hit from Ryan Hartman with 3:30 left in the third period. Bouchard collided head-first with the net and crashed into the boards.

“We’ll fly home and get it checked out,” Knoblauch said. “Hopefully it’s something minor.”

Bouchard, who has played in all 29 games this season, was seen limping after the game but appeared to avoid a serious injury. He had missed only two games in the previous three seasons.

Golden Knights secure win in overtime to extend their streak against Jets

Ivan Barbashev scored at 3:47 of overtime, leading the Vegas Golden Knights to a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night.

Barbashev received a pass from Shea Theodore during a two-on-one break and fired a wrist shot from the left circle, hitting the near post and past goalie Connor Hellebuyck for the game-winning goal. This was his team-leading 14th goal of the season.

Victor Olofsson and Keegan Kolesar also scored for Vegas, and Theodore added two assists. With this victory, the Golden Knights extended their winning streak to eight straight regular-season wins against the Jets.

Adin Hill made 18 saves for the Golden Knights, improving his career record to 6-0-0 against the Jets and 11-0-2 against Western Conference teams this season. This win also marked Vegas’ fourth consecutive victory, tying their season-high.

For Winnipeg, Josh Morrissey and Nikita Chibrikov scored, and Hellebuyck made 33 saves.

Despite being outshot 12-4 in the first period, Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead at 9:27 when Chibrikov scored off a rebound from a Vladislav Namestnikov shot. This was Chibrikov’s second goal of the season.

Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)

Vegas, coming off a five-day midseason break, quickly found its rhythm in the second period, holding Winnipeg without a shot for the first 13:01. By the end of the second period, Vegas had a 22-10 shot advantage but couldn’t get past Hellebuyck, who was helped by several blocked shots. The Jets blocked 25 shots in total, while the Golden Knights blocked 12.

Vegas tied the game 1-1 at 4:34 of the third period. Kolesar grabbed a loose puck along the right boards and scored with a wrist shot from the top of the circle, beating Hellebuyck on his glove side.

Morrissey put Winnipeg back in front at 10:55, blasting a slap shot into the top corner from the top of the left circle.

The Jets were then called for tripping penalties by Gabe Vilardi and Dylan DeMelo just 13 seconds apart, giving Vegas a five-on-three power play. Olofsson tied the game 38 seconds later with a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle, assisted by Mark Stone

Golden Knights begin tough road trip with a matchup against the strong Jets

After a rare five-day break, the Pacific Division-leading Vegas Golden Knights are heading out for what is likely their toughest road trip of the season.

Vegas will play three games in four days, including matchups against two teams that are tied for the NHL lead in points. The trip begins Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets.

After a day off on Friday, the Golden Knights will face a back-to-back schedule, starting with a Saturday afternoon game against Connor McDavid and the defending Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers. Then, on Sunday morning, they will play the Central Division co-leader Minnesota Wild.

Winnipeg, which just beat the Boston Bruins 8-1 on Tuesday, and Minnesota both sit at the top of the NHL with 42 points.

Vegas has won its last three games, outscoring opponents 8-3, including a 1-0 win over McDavid and the Oilers in Las Vegas. The Golden Knights haven’t played since last Friday when they held off the Dallas Stars 3-2 with 38 saves from goalie Adin Hill.

“We have had time to recover,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “I thought it was right for us because of the intensity of our schedule early on, so we needed it. It came at a good time for us.

“We’ll be back to work with three games in four days this week. We’ll be on the ice a lot. Hopefully, they’ll have lots of energy in the third periods. That’s what your rest does for you, should give you some legs each night and then on the last game on Sunday. Hopefully, we haven’t skated them into the ground this week where we have something left for that game, too.”

Cassidy said the Golden Knights spent a lot of time working on basic skills.

Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)

“Playing through hands, stick-on-puck details, all the stuff that when you’re playing a lot of games you’re not practicing,” he said. “I don’t want to say (it was a) mini training camp because that’s probably not accurate, but in some respects, (we did) daily drills we would have done in training camp for some of them.”

The first stop on the road trip will be against the Jets, who have won three of their last four games and tied their season-high with eight goals against Boston. This was the ninth time Winnipeg scored six or more goals in a game, the most in the NHL.

The top line of Mark Scheifele (two goals, one assist), Kyle Connor (one goal, two assists), and Gabriel Vilardi (one goal, one assist) combined for four goals and eight points against the Bruins, helping Winnipeg improve to 10-3-0 at home.

“I thought we played a helluva hockey game,” Jets coach Scott Arniel said. “I really liked just the fact that we were in attack mode all the game.”

Scheifele and Connor entered Wednesday tied for eighth in the NHL with 16 goals each.

“Usually when they play like that, it leads to a win,” forward Adam Lowry said. “They came up huge for us throughout the game. Dominant shifts, some huge goals at critical times to get us in the lead and things like that.

Their line has had a great year so far, and it kind of starts with Mark driving it down the middle. In order for us to be successful, that’s the line we look to.”

Jack Eichel states that Team USA aims to show it has narrowed the gap with Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off

Jack Eichel’s national pride was clear when he talked about representing the United States in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

During a Team USA Zoom call on Thursday, Eichel quickly responded when reminded that U.S. teams with NHL players haven’t won a gold medal in best-on-best international tournaments since the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

“I’ll take it,” Eichel said after Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy apologized for not hearing the question.

Eichel explained, “I think there’s a lot to prove for us as USA Hockey. I think for a while it was Canada on a pedestal by themselves. And I think for us, we feel like we’ve closed that gap. And I think this is a great opportunity to prove that.”

Eichel, who is from the Boston area, made his case by mentioning the growing number of American players in the NHL, many of whom came through the U.S. national development program in the past decade. Eichel himself is one of those players, as are many of his teammates.

Charlie McAvoy takes the puck forward

“Obviously, we feel very confident in our group and the names on our roster,” Eichel said. “But that’s only half the battle. You’ve got to go out there and do it. And we’re excited for that opportunity.”

The 4 Nations Face-Off was introduced during last All-Star Weekend. It divides NHL players from Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the U.S. into four teams, replacing the All-Star Game this season.

Eichel’s comments came a day after the teams revealed their full rosters for the NHL/NHL Players’ Association-backed tournament, which will take place in Montreal and Boston from February 12-20.

The U.S. team is filled with talent but has not been successful at the senior international level. The U.S. last medaled at the world championships in 2021, winning bronze, and has not placed higher than third since the 1960 Winter Games at Squaw Valley. The Americans’ last Olympic gold came in 1980, when they were amateurs and famously won the “Miracle on Ice.” The U.S. also won silver medals in 2002 and 2010, but lost to Canada both times.

In 1996, U.S. goalie Mike Richter was named World Cup MVP as he helped the Americans defeat Canada in the decisive Game 3 of the final series.

“I think we check every box there is,” McAvoy said. “I think the confidence amongst us in our group should be sky high.”

The U.S. team’s leadership, including Wild GM Bill Guerin and Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, focused on experience when choosing players. The oldest players on the team are forwards Chris Kreider of the Rangers and Brock Nelson of the Islanders, both 33 and with a lot of world championships experience.

The youngest player is 22-year-old Brock Faber, a defenseman from Minnesota who has Olympic experience after playing in the 2022 Beijing Games when the NHL did not participate due to pandemic-related issues.

The U.S. will face a talented Team Canada, which includes superstars like Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and defenseman Cale Makar.

Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)

Team USA has a strong lineup, especially at center, with Eichel, Auston Matthews, and Dylan Larkin. The U.S. also has a solid group of goalies, including two-time Vezina Trophy-winner Connor Hellebuyck, Jake Oettinger, and Jeremy Swayman.

USA Hockey has recently seen success, winning two of the past four world junior championships and six total since 2004. McAvoy, Oettinger, and defenseman Adam Fox were part of the U.S. team that won the 2017 world junior title.

Canada, too, has a veteran-heavy squad, including 14 players with at least one Stanley Cup title.

“You can’t put a price tag on experience,” said Canada coach Jon Cooper, who also coaches the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Cooper added, “I truly believe this is a tournament where you’re basically playing three Game 7s in the preliminary round. There’s no real margin for error. This is as competitive a group as you will find. Every one of these players will lay in traffic for their country.”

Shea Theodore helps Golden Knights defeat Ducks for third consecutive victory

Shea Theodore scored two goals against his former team to help the visiting Vegas Golden Knights beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 on Wednesday.

William Karlsson, who also began his NHL career with the Ducks, and Alexander Holtz also scored for Vegas. Victor Olofsson, Jack Eichel, and Tomas Hertl each had two assists. The Golden Knights, who lead the Pacific Division, have now won 6 of their last 8 games and all three games against Anaheim this season.

Ilya Samsonov, the Golden Knights’ goaltender, made 19 saves. Anaheim’s goalie, John Gibson, stopped 30 shots.

Jackson LaCombe scored the Ducks’ only goal, but Anaheim has struggled recently, losing two of their last three games and only winning twice in their last six.

Karlsson, who was named to Sweden’s Four Nations team earlier that day, scored his first goal in nine games at 16:26 of the first period. He took advantage of a loose puck during a scramble and scored his fifth goal of the season.

Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Hockey Club

Theodore, who was also named to Canada’s squad along with injured forward Mark Stone, defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, and goalie Adin Hill, made it 2-0 for Vegas at 6:38 of the second period. Theodore scored after following an odd-man rush and tapping in a rebound following a sprawling save by Gibson.

LaCombe scored late in the second period to put Anaheim on the board with a long shot that beat a screened Samsonov.

Holtz made it 3-1 for Vegas in the third period with a goal at 3:05. He finished off a well-executed give-and-go with Tanner Pearson during a two-on-one break.

Theodore sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:16 of the third period, his third of the season.

The loss was even more frustrating for the Ducks as forward Trevor Zegras had to leave the game early in the second period after an accidental collision with Karlsson. Zegras appeared to injure his right leg when their skates locked.
