Trea Turner hit two two-run home runs against Max Fried, Aaron Nola earned his 100th career win, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves 8-6 on Friday night.
The Phillies, leading the NL East, increased their margin over the second-place Braves to 10 games with this win in the series opener.
Despite missing key hitters like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and J.T. Realmuto due to injuries, the Phillies managed to amass 15 hits.
“It shows the strength of a good team,” Nola commented. Manager Rob Thomson added, “It speaks volumes. Our front office has done an excellent job of building that depth.”
Nola (10-4) pitched well, retiring the first 10 Braves batters he faced until Ozzie Albies singled with one out in the fourth inning. Austin Riley followed with a two-run homer to center field.
Albies had a productive night with three hits, including a home run, while Marcell Ozuna contributed a three-run homer in the eighth inning off José Alvarado.
Despite the Braves hitting three home runs, they couldn’t match Turner’s performance. Turner, who was voted as one of Philadelphia’s three starters for the National League All-Star Game, hit his first home run in the Phillies’ three-run fourth inning against Fried (7-4).
His second two-run homer, a 459-foot blast into the left field seats in the sixth inning, marked his 16th career game with multiple home runs and was the longest homer of his career.
