Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence walked through the hallway, entered the locker room, and hit a laundry bin in frustration. He briefly stopped at his locker before heading straight to veteran center Mitch Morse.
They had a lot to talk about, and it might have been the first step towards Lawrence addressing the team’s struggling offense.
For the second week in a row, Lawrence and the Jaguars were confused on offense. Lawrence completed 14 of 30 passes for 220 yards in a 18-13 defeat against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
He was sacked four times, including once for a late safety, and expressed his frustration after the team’s seventh loss in their last eight games.
“We suck right now, so I’m pretty shocked,” Lawrence said, noting that he has lost his last seven NFL starts and has gone a career-long 294 days without a win.
“We’ve got to figure it out. … Everybody has got to take accountability, look in the mirror and fix it. I’ve got to play better. I’m the leader of this offense. It’s on me.”
The Jaguars (0-2) totaled 323 yards, but 210 of those came on their last four drives. Before that, Lawrence and the Jaguars struggled on third downs, had communication problems that led to two burned timeouts, and even had a heated argument between Lawrence and coach Doug Pederson on the sideline.
“We’re on the same page,” Lawrence said. However, anyone who has seen the Jaguars play the first two games would disagree.
They started strong against Miami last week and were about to go up 24-7 late in the third quarter when Travis Etienne fumbled near the goal line. Since then, Jacksonville has largely faltered.
Between the second half against the Dolphins and the first half on Sunday, the Jaguars managed just 186 yards, three points, and converted two out of ten third-down attempts.
“We’ve got to take charge,” Lawrence said. “We’re standing around waiting on somebody to make a play. … We’ve got to find a rhythm as an offense. Too many good players to perform like that, really the last two weeks.”
While Lawrence and Morse talked in the locker room, Pederson and owner Shad Khan were having a discussion in a nearby room. Khan had stated before the season that “winning now” is his expectation.
