The Turkish Super Cup ended in turmoil on Sunday when Fenerbahçe players walked off the field after conceding an early goal to rival Galatasaray, who were declared the winner with a score of 1-0.
Fenerbahçe decided to field their under-19 team for the match as a protest against what they believed to be unfair treatment by Turkish soccer authorities.
Argentinian forward Mauro Icardi scored within the first minute of the game, assisted by Barış Alper Yılmaz. Shortly after, Fenerbahçe players left the field, causing dissatisfaction among the fans.
As a result, Galatasaray was declared the winner, leading to premature celebrations for Icardi’s team.
Fenerbahçe president Yıldırım Ali Koç expressed discontent in a statement on the club’s website, highlighting a “rebellion” against what he perceived as injustices in Turkish football over the years. Koç emphasized the need for a reset in Turkish football.
Last week, two Fenerbahçe players, İrfan Can Eğribayat and Jayden Oosterwolde, received one-match bans from the Turkish soccer federation following an incident during a Superlig game against Trabzonspor. Trabzonspor fans had entered the field after the match, resulting in Trabzonspor being penalized with six games played without fans.
Fenerbahçe is scheduled to play against Olympiakos in the Europa Conference League quarterfinals on Thursday. The Turkish team had expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the Super Cup ahead of their game against the Greek side.
