Twins nearly lose Byron Buxton to Milwaukee sausage collision

Byron Buxton showcased a compelling lesson in situational awareness during Tuesday’s game, reminding everyone why it’s crucial to glance both ways before stepping out of the dugout.

In the midst of the sixth inning in a showdown against the Milwaukee Brewers on their home turf, the Minnesota Twins’ standout nearly found himself in a precarious situation involving one of baseball’s quirkiest traditions: the Brewers’ famed sausage race.

Unaware that the lively race was underway, Buxton inadvertently positioned himself directly in the path of Sausage No. 1, affectionately known as Bratwurst. Fortunately, Buxton’s reflexes, honed through years of professional athleticism, kicked in just in time for him to narrowly evade the incoming Bratwurst after a quick glance over his shoulder.

Though Buxton managed to sidestep the sausage without incident, the exchange didn’t go unnoticed by his teammates. Following the game, Ryan Jeffers and Buxton shared a lighthearted moment regarding the near-miss, as reported by The Athletic’s Dan Hayes:

Jeffers jokingly remarked, “I think it would’ve been great if he got run over by the bratwurst. It would’ve been a way better story.”

To which Buxton quipped, “Sheboygan would’ve had a good one.”

Jeffers, in good spirits, replied, “As long as he’s OK. I mean, the bratwurst was OK.”

Buxton, with a playful retort, countered, “The bratwurst? What about me? That was a train collision because if I took out one, I’m taking out at least two.”

Despite the humorous exchange, the incident underscores the constant risk of injury that Buxton faces. Throughout his illustrious career, spanning a decade, Buxton has endured numerous setbacks, with a season exceeding 100 games played only once in 2017. Last season, he grappled with knee and hamstring injuries, sidelining him for the majority of August and September.

However, entering this season in optimal health, Buxton represents a pivotal asset for the Twins as they strive for a consecutive AL Central title. Thus far, he’s demonstrated promising form at the plate, boasting a slash line of .286/.375/.429 across four games.

As the Twins set sail on their season journey, Buxton’s well-being takes precedence, as the team eagerly awaits his ongoing impact on the field.
