Tyler Adams, the captain of the United States team, will not be able to start the Premier League season as he is recovering from back surgery, according to Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.
Adams missed most of last season due to a hamstring injury, and although he briefly returned, his first season with Bournemouth was cut short by back spasms.
The 25-year-old played a full match for the U.S. in their 1-0 loss to Uruguay at the Copa America on July 1. Iraola told the BBC that Adams underwent surgery two days later.
“He will be out for a while,” Iraola said. “It’s hard to say exactly how long, but he won’t be ready for the start of the season. Maybe September? October? I’m not sure.”
When asked why Bournemouth didn’t prevent Adams from joining the international duty, Iraola explained, “It wasn’t our decision. National teams have the authority to select players, and he wanted to play, hoping his injury would improve.
Unfortunately, it worsened,” as reported by the BBC. Adams transferred to Bournemouth from Leeds last summer.
Bournemouth will play an exhibition match against Wrexham in Santa Barbara on Saturday. The Cherries kick off their Premier League campaign on August 17 against Nottingham Forest.
