Marquette Secures Sweet 16 Berth with 81-77 Victory over No. 10 Colorado

In a thrilling showdown on Sunday, Marquette University secured its spot in the Sweet 16 of the 2024 NCAA men’s basketball tournament by defeating the 10th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes with a final score of 81-77. This marks the first time since 2013 that the second-seeded Golden Eagles have advanced to the regional semifinals, marking a significant achievement for the team.

Throughout the game, Marquette showcased its strength, leading by as many as 12 points and maintaining an eight-point lead at halftime. Despite the Buffaloes’ persistent efforts to close the gap in the second half, Marquette managed to hold onto its lead, thanks to some pivotal plays in the final minutes.

One such crucial moment came from sophomore guard Chase Ross, whose long-range jumper put the Golden Eagles ahead by three points. Senior guard Tyler Kolek further solidified Marquette’s advantage with a left-handed floater in the closing minute, ultimately securing the team’s victory.

Kolek emerged as a standout performer, leading the game with 21 points and contributing 11 assists, marking his eighth double-double of the season. Additionally, junior guard Kam Jones made significant contributions with 18 points, including four successful three-pointers.

The impressive performance of Marquette’s backcourt duo drew widespread praise on social media platforms, with commentators highlighting their skill and composure under pressure.

Despite a valiant effort from Colorado’s junior guard KJ Simpson, who recorded 20 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, the Buffaloes fell short in their bid to advance to the next round.

Looking ahead, Marquette is set to face off against No. 11 North Carolina State in the Sweet 16. The Wolfpack, who eliminated Oakland in overtime and previously defeated sixth-seeded Texas Tech, present a formidable challenge for Marquette.

While Marquette may have anticipated a slightly easier path in the tournament draw, the team remains focused on the task at hand and will not underestimate its upcoming opponent. With the next round scheduled to take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the stage is set for another exciting matchup as Marquette continues its pursuit of NCAA tournament success.
