Lee Dong-gyeong’s early goal secured a 1-0 victory for Ulsan HD against Yokohama F.Marinos in the first leg of their Asian Champions League semifinal on Wednesday.
This win not only puts Ulsan in a favorable position for the second leg in Japan next Wednesday but also guarantees their participation in the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup in the United States next year, as one of Asia’s four representatives.
Already, Urawa Reds of Japan and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal have secured their spots in the Club World Cup as previous winners of Asia’s top club tournament, joining other top clubs from Europe like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich.
Lee’s goal came in the 19th minute, and despite Ulsan’s efforts, they couldn’t extend their lead, with Joo Min-kyu hitting the post twice.
Yokohama, under the coaching of former Leeds and Liverpool player Harry Kewell, is making its first appearance in the Asian Champions League semifinals.
Meanwhile, Al-Hilal is still competing in this year’s Asian Champions League and will face Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates in the other semifinal later Wednesday, following a one-day postponement due to severe weather conditions.
